  • Tips for creating inclusive classrooms at LTH
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: LTH:s 12:e Pedagogiska inspirationskonferens. - 2003-3761 .- 2003-377X. ; , s. 45-47
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • All people are different. All teachers are different. All students are different. They have different life situations, different study situations, and different preferences, conditions, and abilities. How can we take this diversity into account when we plan our teaching and exams? What situations should we prepare for? How can we help students focus on their learning and not on unnecessary obstacles we unconsciously introduce? If we make small efforts upfront, this lets us avoid much larger efforts later on when we are confronted with the reality of students in our class and their different needs. At this round table, let us discuss diversity in teaching and learning. During fall 2023, a pilot of the course “The Inclusive Classroom” was run at LTH, the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. We present the compiled, most important take-aways of participants and instructors, in addition to individual case-studies. In a nutshell: There are a lot of easy things you can do that can already have large effects, and you are not alone: LTH has many resources to support you. Please join a supportive, engaged community and learn from and with us!

  • Biogeochemical and mechanical characterization of the landfill fraction generated by mechanical waste sorting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Detritus. - : CISA Publisher. - 2611-4127 .- 2611-4135. ; 15, s. 120-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the resource recovery from mixed waste streams are performed, new mixed waste streams are generated. Some of these waste streams does not fit well to existing waste management options, for example, they may hold a to low heating value to sustain combustion and they may have a too high carbon content to be accepted at non-hazardous landfills. Also various health and pollution risks may arise as well as practical handling issues due to the physical properties of such wastes. One such waste is the under sieve fraction generated when recovering metals and fuel from mixed waste streams using mechanical and magnetic separation tools. Such mechanical sorting is typically used for mixed wastes of different properties and particle sizes, such as houshold bulky wastes, construction and demolition waste, and at landfill mining materials. In this work, we examine the properties of one case of mechanical sorting of bulky wastes, including construction and demolition wastes. We analyse a broad spectrum of chemical, physical, and mechanical properties as well as some biological. Based on the data we develop recommendations for landfilling, what potential problems might arise and how to counteract them.

  • Surveillance of indeterminate pulmonary nodules detected with CT in a Swedish population-based study (SCAPIS) : Psychosocial consequences and impact on health-related quality of life - A multicentre prospective cross-sectional study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 11:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To investigate whether surveillance of pulmonary nodules detected with low-dose CT (LDCT) impacted health-related quality of life and psychosocial consequences in the Swedish population-based study, Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS).Design: A prospective cross-sectional study.Settings and participants: This multicentre (five sites) observational study, which included a cohort from SCAPIS, consisted of 632 participants with indeterminate pulmonary nodules detected with LDCT. These participants continued surveillance for up to 36 months, during which lung cancer was not detected (surveillance group). Additionally, 972 participants with a negative pulmonary LDCT scan were included as a control group. Matching criteria were LDCT date (±2 weeks), gender and site.Outcome measures: All participants completed a health-related quality of life questionnaire (RAND-36) and the Consequences of Screening (COS) questionnaire, an average of 3 years after LDCT was conducted at entry into SCAPIS.Results: Participants were 51-70 years old at study commencement. Overall, the two groups did not differ in demographic or psychosocial variables, smoking habits or pulmonary medical history. Individuals from countries other than Sweden and those with low socioeconomic status were less likely to participate (p<0.001). No effects on health-related quality of life were observed via RAND-36. In COS, the surveillance group demonstrated a higher OR for anxiety about lung cancer (OR 3.96, 95% CI 2.35 to 6.66, p<0.001), experiencing a sense of dejection (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.72, p=0.015) and thoughts about existential values (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.60, p=0.018).Conclusions: Lung surveillance with LDCT contributed to significant experiences of sense of dejection, anxiety about lung cancer and development of thoughts about existential values among participants in the surveillance group compared with the controls. The risk of side effects should be communicated for informed decision-making about (non-)attendance in lung cancer screening.

  • Cohort fertility patterns in the Nordic countries
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Demographic Research. - 1435-9871. ; 20:14, s. 313-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous analyses of period fertility suggest that the trends of the Nordic countries are sufficiently similar to speak of a common "Nordic fertility regime". We investigate whether this assumption can be corroborated by comparing cohort fertility patterns in the Nordic countries. We study cumulated and completed fertility of Nordic birth cohorts based on the childbearing histories of women born in 1935 and later derived from the population registers of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. We further explore childbearing behaviour by women’s educational attainment. The results show remarkable similarities in postponement and recuperation between the countries. Median childbearing age is about 2−3 years higher in the 1960−64 cohort than in the 1950−54 cohort, but the younger cohort recuperates the fertility level of the older cohort at ages 30 and above. A similar pattern of recuperation can be observed for highly educated women as compared to women with less education, resulting in small differences in completed fertility across educational groups. Another interesting finding is that of a positive relationship between educational level and the final number of children when women who become mothers at similar ages are compared. Despite some differences in the levels of childlessness, country differences in fertility outcome are generally small. The cohort analyses thus support the notion of a common Nordic fertility regime.

  • Gendering family composition : Sex preferences for children and childbearing behavior in the Nordic countries
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Demography. ; 43:2, s. 255-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been argued that a society’s gender system might influence parents’ sex preferences for children. If this was true, one should expect to find no evidence of such preferences in countries with a high level of gender equality. In this paper, we exploit population register data from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden to examine continuities and changes in parental sex preferences in the Nordic countries during the last three to four decades. First, we cannot observe a visible effect of the sex of the first-born child on second birth risks. Secondly, we detect a distinct preference for at least one child of each sex among parents of two children. Next to this combination preference our analysis reveals, thirdly, that Danish, Norwegian and Swedish parents developed a preference for having a daughter, while Finns exhibit a significant son preference. These findings show that modernization and more equal opportunities for women and men do not necessarily lead to parental gender indifference. On the contrary, they might even result in new sex preferences.

  • A modified standard addition method in X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - 0039-9140 .- 1873-3573. ; 40:5, s. 669-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A modified standard addition method for single element determination by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry has been studied. The attenuation properties of the standard added samples are kept constant by adding decreasing amounts of an attenuation modifier along with increasing amounts of a standard. In this way the standard addition curve will be a straight line in cases where the ordinary standard addition curve is non-linear, and linear regression can be used to evaluate the concentration of the analyte. Standard additions of oxides of a number of elements, with and without modifier, have been made to cellulose powder or a mixture of aluminium oxide and polyethylene as matrices in order to test the method. The method has been applied to the determination of zinc in fly-ash from a steel work and of iron in cement. The fly-ash contained about 5% of zinc and the cement samples between 2 and 5% of Fe(2)O(3). The results were compared with those obtained by ICP-AES after decomposition of samples in lithium tetraborate or lithium metaborate and dissolution of the melt in 10%(v/v) nitric acid. The results agreed within 2%, relative, for fly-ash and within 3-6%, relative, for cement samples.

  • Determination of bromine, chlorine, sulphur and phosphorus in peat by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with single-element and multi-element standard addition
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-9140 .- 1873-3573. ; 37:2, s. 185-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bromine (20-40 ppm), chlorine (200-500 ppm), sulphur (0.2-3%) and phosphorus (300-1000 ppm) in peat have been determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) combined with the standard-addition method. Chlorine, sulphur and phosphorus have also been determined by other methods and agreement between the results is good. Theoretical calculations based on the Sherman equation were made to validate the linearity of the standard-addition curves. A multi-element standard-addition technique has been tested with addition of all elements at the same time. The results for chlorine were high but after correction for the difference in attenuation coefficient between the sample and added compound the results agreed with those from single-element standard addition.

  • Determination of lead in fly-ash from a garbage incinerator by atomic-absorption and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry
  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-9140 .- 1873-3573. ; 35:5, s. 337-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lead content in fly-ash collected by an electrostatic precipitator has been determined by atomic-absorption spectrometry (AAS) after decomposition by four different leaching/dissolution techniques, and also determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) by the standard-addition method. The XRFS data were evaluated by non-linear regression since the standard additions affected the attenuation coefficient of the sample. Good agreement was obtained between the results obtained with AAS and XRFS. It is concluded that lead is quantitatively extracted by hot 1M nitric acid or treatment with hydrofluoric acid/nitric acid. Direct measurement of briquetted samples by XRFS is suggested for rapid monitoring of the lead content in fly-ash from garbage incineration.
