  • Surface second harmonic generation from silicon pillar arrays with strong geometrical dependence
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 40:9, s. 2072-2075
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental demonstration and analysis of enhanced surface second harmonic generation (SHG) from hexagonal arrays of silicon pillars. Three sets of Si pillar samples with truncated cone-shaped pillar arrays having periods of 500, 1000, and 2000 nm, and corresponding average diameters of 200, 585 and 1550 nm, respectively, are fabricated by colloidal lithography and plasma dry etching. We have observed strong dependence of SHG intensity on the pillar geometry. Pillar arrays with a 1000 nm period and a 585 nm average diameter give more than a one order of magnitude higher SHG signal compared to the other two samples. We theoretically verified the dependence of SHG intensity on pillar geometry by finite difference time domain simulations in terms of the surface normal E-field component. The enhanced surface SHG light can be useful for nonlinear silicon photonics, surface/interface characterization, and optical biosensing.

  • Corner states of light in photonic waveguides
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 13:10, s. 697-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recently established paradigm of higher-order topological states of matter has shown that not only edge and surface states but also states localized to corners, can have robust and exotic properties. Here we report on the experimental realization of novel corner states made out of visible light in three-dimensional photonic structures inscribed in glass samples using femtosecond laser technology. By creating and analysing waveguide arrays, which form two-dimensional breathing kagome lattices in various sample geometries, we establish this as a platform for corner states exhibiting a remarkable degree of flexibility and control. In each sample geometry we measure eigenmodes that are localized at the corners in a finite frequency range, in complete analogy with a theoretical model of the breathing kagome. Here, measurements reveal that light can be ‘fractionalized,’ corresponding to simultaneous localization to each corner of a triangular sample, even in the presence of defects.

  • Commissioning of the DESIREE storage rings - a new facility for cold ion-ion collisions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: XXVIII International Conference on Photonic, Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC 2013). - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; 488:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the ongoing commissioning of the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. Beams of atomic carbon anions (C-) and smaller carbon anion molecules (C-2(-), C-3(-), C-4(-) etc.) have been produced in a sputter ion source, accelerated to 10 keV or 20 keV, and stored successfully in the two electrostatic rings. The rings are enclosed in a common vacuum chamber cooled to below 13 Kelvin. The DESIREE facility allows for studies of internally relaxed single isolated atomic, molecular and cluster ions and for collision experiments between cat-and anions down to very low center-of-mass collision energies (meV scale). The total thermal load of the vacuum chamber at this temperature is measured to be 32 W. The decay rates of stored ion beams have two components: a non-exponential component caused by the space charge of the beam itself which dominates at early times and an exponential term from the neutralization of the beam in collisions with residual gas at later times. The residual gas limited storage lifetime of carbon anions in the symmetric ring is over seven minutes while the 1/e lifetime in the asymmetric ring is measured to be about 30 seconds. Although we aim to improve the storage in the second ring, the number of stored ions are now sufficient for many merged beams experiments with positive and negative ions requiring milliseconds to seconds ion storage.

  • First results from the Double ElectroStatic Ion-Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: XXVIII International Conference on Photonic, Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC 2013). - : Institute of Physics (IOP). ; 488
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have stored the first beams in one of the rings of the double electrostatic ion-storage ring, DESIREE at cryogenic and at room temperature conditions. At cryogenic operations the following parameters are found. Temperature; T= 13K, pressure; p <10(-13) mbar, initial number of stored ions; N > 10(7) and storage lifetime of a C-2(-) beam; tau = 450 S.

  • First storage of ion beams in the Double Electrostatic Ion-Ring Experiment : DESIREE
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 84:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first storage of ion beams in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We have produced beams of atomic carbon anions and small carbon anion molecules (Cn-, n = 1, 2, 3, 4) in a sputter ion source. The ion beams were accelerated to 10 keV kinetic energy and stored in an electrostatic ion storage ring enclosed in a vacuum chamber at 13 K. For 10 keV C2- molecular anions we measure the residual-gas limited beam storage lifetime to be 448 s +/- 18 s with two independent detector systems. Using the measured storage lifetimes we estimate that the residual gas pressure is in the 10-14 mbar range. When high current ion beams are injected, the number of stored particles does not follow a single exponential decay law as would be expected for stored particles lost solely due to electron detachment in collision with the residual-gas. Instead, we observe a faster initial decay rate, which we ascribe to the effect of the space charge of the ion beam on the storage capacity.

  • Multiparty Quantum Communication and fs-laser Written Integrated Optics Circuits
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Quantum information science, the rapidly developing interdisciplinary field,  gives power to the information and communications technologies (ICT) by  providing secure communication, precision measurements, ultra-powerful simulation and ultimately computation. It is well known that photons are an ideal candidate for encoding the quantum bit, or "qubit", in quantum information and specially for quantum communication. This thesis consists of two main parts. In the first part, realization of quantum security tasks using optical fibers has been implemented. Bell tests are a cornerstone of quantum key distribution and are necessary for device-independent security. Device-independent Bell inequality test must be performed with care to avoid loopholes. Time-energy entanglement has a distinct advantage over polarization as it is easier transmitted over longer distances, therefore, it may be preferable as a quantum resource to perform reliable key distribution. Novel multi-party communication protocols: secret sharing, detectable Byzantine agreement, clock synchronization, and reduction of communication complexity, all these quantum protocols has been realized without compromising on detection efficiency or generating extremely complex many-particle entangled states. These protocols are realized in an optical fiber setup with sequential phase modulation on single photons. In recent years there has been great interest in fabricating ICT optical setups in low scale in glass chips, which would replace the bulk setups on tables used today. In the second part of the thesis, realization of photonic waveguides in glass has been implemented. Using femtosecond laser inscription of waveguides in glass, photonic quantum technologies and integrated optical circuits are becoming more and more important in miniaturization of optical circuits written in different glass samples for the quantum optics and quantum information processing. These platforms offer stability over the time-scales required for multi-photon coincidence based measurements. The study and optimization the different building blocks for integrated photonic quantum circuits, for instance the directional coupler and Mach-Zehnder interferometer is very important. The principal goal is to develop a method for design, fabrication and characterization of integrated optics circuits for further applications in quantum information. Incorporation of photon sources, detectors, and circuits integrating waveguides technology can be used to produce integrated photonics devices.

  • A linear optical trap with active medium for experiments with high power laser pulses
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 86:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A linear optical trap for circulating high power laser pulses and tuning these pulses to high repetition frequency of several tens of MHz has been developed. A ns excimer pumped dye laser pulse has been injected with help of a Wollaston prism and a synchronized Pockels cell into an optical trap formed by two highly reflecting mirrors in a linear configuration. The test was done at lambda = 580 nm, but the optical trap can be used without limitations in a broad band of optical wavelengths (400-700 nm). Power considerations give an increase of the efficiency of the optical trap of about 7 times compared to single passage of the laser pulse through the experimental section. The time structure of the trapped laser pulses can be controlled by changing the distance between the two high reflecting mirrors. The efficiency of the optical trap strongly depends upon optical losses. To compensate the optical losses, an amplifying cell was introduced, and the efficiency was about 60 times higher than that by single passage of the laser pulse through the experimental section.

  • A seeded dye laser cavity for intracavity experiments
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Laser physics. - 1054-660X .- 1555-6611. ; 25:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A seeded dye laser cavity, synchronously pumped by the 2nd harmonic of the Nd:YAG laser has been designed and experimentally tested. The used seed signal was the well defined narrow linewidth output laser signal (Delta lambda = 0.013 nm) from the excimer-dye laser system. Energy considerations showed that the intracavity laser energy, that can be used for an experimental section inside the cavity, can reach an efficiency of 20% of the pumping energy. The wavelength and linewidth are fully controlled by the wavelength and linewidth of the seeding laser.
