  • Petabit-per-second data transmission using a chip-scale microcomb ring resonator source
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 16:11, s. 798-802
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical fibre communication is the backbone of the internet. As essential core technologies are approaching their limits of size, speed and energy-efficiency, there is a need for new technologies that offer further scaling of data transmission capacity. Here we show that a single optical frequency-comb source based on a silicon nitride ring resonator supports data capacities in the petabit-per-second regime. We experimentally demonstrate transmission of 1.84 Pbit s–1 over a 37-core, 7.9-km-long fibre using 223 wavelength channels derived from a single microcomb ring resonator producing a stabilized dark-pulse Kerr frequency comb. We also present a theoretical analysis that indicates that a single, chip-scale light source should be able to support 100 Pbit s–1 in massively parallel space-and-wavelength multiplexed data transmission systems. Our findings could mark a shift in the design of future communication systems, targeting device-efficient transmitters and receivers.

  • Injection locking-based pump recovery for phase-sensitive amplified links
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : The Optical Society. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 21:12, s. 14512-14529
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An injection locking-based pump recovery system for phase-sensitive amplified links, capable of handling 40 dB effective span loss, is demonstrated. Measurements with 10 GBd DQPSK signals show penalty-free recovery of a pump wave, phase modulated with two sinusoidal RF-tones at 0.1 GHz and 0.3 GHz, with 64 dB amplification. The operating power limit for the pump recovery system is experimentally investigated and is governed by the noise transfer and phase modulation transfer characteristics of the injection-locked laser. The corresponding link penalties are explained and quantified. This system enables, for the first time, WDM compatible phase-sensitive amplified links over significant lengths.

  • Quasi-Real-Time Optical Sampling Scheme for High-Speed Signal Acquisition and Processing
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 25:5, s. 504-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a quasi-real-time coherent sampling approach that combines the high-bandwidth and high-fidelity signal acquisition of equivalent-time optical sampling with real-time digital signal processing and equalization algorithms. The quasi-real-time concept enables feasibility studies of optical communication at symbol rates beyond the bandwidth of conventional digitizer approaches. Here we demonstrate the technique using a 107-GBd polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keyed signal.

  • All-optical phase and amplitude regenerator for next-generation telecommunications systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 4:10, s. 690-695
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fibre-optic communications systems have traditionally carried data using binary (on-off) encoding of the light amplitude. However, next-generation systems will use both the amplitude and phase of the optical carrier to achieve higher spectral efficiencies and thus higher overall data capacities. Although this approach requires highly complex transmitters and receivers, the increased capacity and many further practical benefits that accrue from a full knowledge of the amplitude and phase of the optical field more than outweigh this additional hardware complexity and can greatly simplify optical network design. However, use of the complex optical field gives rise to a new dominant limitation to system performance—nonlinear phase noise. Developing a device to remove this noise is therefore of great technical importance. Here, we report the development of the first practical (‘black-box’) all-optical regenerator capableof removing both phase and amplitude noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals.
