  • Euler time discretization of backward doubly SDEs and application to semilinear SPDEs
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Stochastics and Partial Differential Equations: Analysis and Computations. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2194-0401 .- 2194-041X. ; 4, s. 592-634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates a numerical probabilistic method for the solution of some semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs in short). The numerical scheme is based on discrete time approximation for solutions of systems of decoupled forward-backward doubly stochastic differential equations. Under standard assumptions on the parameters, the convergence and the rate of convergence of the numerical scheme is proven. The proof is based on a generalization of the result on the path regularity of the backward equation.

  • Efficacy of Ficus sycomorus (Sycamore Fig) Extract on Intestinal Coccidiosis in Experimentally Infected Rabbits
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Life. - : MDPI. - 2075-1729. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the Ficus sycomorus extract on Eimeria intestinalis in experimentally infected rabbits. For this purpose, forty male 30-day-old rabbits (Blanc de Bouscat) were divided into four groups (n = 10 in each group). Rabbits kept in the first group served as negative control (non-treated-non-infected). Rabbits kept in the second, third, and fourth groups were challenged at 10 weeks old with 3 x 10(4) E. intestinalis sporulated oocysts. The third and fourth groups were treated orally with diclazuril 10% (0.05 mg/kg body weight) and F. sycomorus (100 mg/Kg) for three consecutive days, respectively. The efficacy was assessed based on the growth performance parameters, clinical symptoms, oocyst shedding, histopathological findings, and hematological parameters for 16 days post challenge. The study revealed that rabbits treated with F. sycomorus methanolic extract and diclazuril showed mild clinical symptoms with a significant decrease in oocyst shedding compared with the positive control. Moreover, the diclazuril-treated group showed the highest leukocytic count and the lowest monocytes percentage compared with other groups. Furthermore, the lowest lymphocytes percentage was recorded in the control positive group. Histopathologically, moderate coccidia infestation in the intestinal mucosa and moderate hydropic degeneration of hepatocytes were observed in the diclazuril treated group compared with the negative control. However, mild coccidia infestation in the intestinal mucosa and slight coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes was found in the F. sycomorus treated group. In conclusion, F. sycomorus methanolic extract had promising effects on the live performance, oocyst count, and blood variables, while it possesses adverse consequences on the hepatic tissues. Further studies are required to optimize the dose and extraction method to mitigate its side effects.

  • UPLC-QToF Nanospray MS and NMR Analysis of Ficus sycomorus Stem Bark and Its Effects on Rabbit
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Processes. - : MDPI. - 2227-9717. ; 9:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, a phytochemical of Ficus sycomorus (Moraceae family) was screened, and the effect of this extract on rabbit performance indices, immunity, and carcass quality measures was determined. Ficus sycomorus samples were collected, air-dried, and extracted with 70% methanol to prepare a solution of 100 mg/mL concentration. The extract was subjected to high-resolution mass spectrometric measurements via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight-nanospray mass spectrometry (UPLC-QToF-MS) and 1H NMR analysis. Forty-eight male rabbits, one-month-old, belonging to the Blanc de Bouscat and New Zealand White breeds were selected and distributed equally in a 2 x 3 factorial trial. The rabbits within each breed received F. sycomorus extract at the dose of 0, 100, and 200 mg/kg for 60 days. Blood samples were collected and serum obtained for the detection of liver enzymes, serum lipids, and proteins. The results of UPLC-QToF-MS and molecular networking analysis revealed the presence of procyanidin B2, procyanidin A1, genistein, eriodyctiol, catechin, luteolin, biochanin A, and chlorogenic acid that might exhibit various pharmaceutical activities. However, the F. sycomorus extract reduced rabbit performance indices and carcass quality measures. In addition, this extract significantly depressed the low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides, which may indicate the antidyslipidemia effect of this extract on rabbits.

  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Biomaterials are the fastest-growing emerging field of  biodevices. Design and development of biomaterials play a significant role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Recently, a variety of scaffolds/carriers have been evaluated for tissue regeneration, drug delivery, sensing and imaging.  Liposomes and microspheres have been developed for sustained delivery. Several anti-cancer drugs have been successfully formulated using biomaterial. The targeting of drugs to certain physiological sites has emerged as a promising tool in the treatment with improved drug bioavailability and reduction of dosing frequency. Biodevices-based targeting of drugs may improve the therapeutic success by limiting the adverse drug effects and resulting in more patient compliance and attaining a higher adherence level. Advanced biodevices hold merit as a drug carrier with high carrier capacity, feasibility of incorporation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances, high stability, as well as the feasibility of variable courses. Biodevices for diagnosis of diseases by improving the sensitivity and selectivity on the biomaterials platform is the most latest R & D focus especially in the field of treatment by the prognosis and detection of disease in the early stage. This groundbreaking book is devoted to all of the emerging areas of biomaterials and biodevices including therapeutic agents, molecular targeting and diagnostic imaging capabilities. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mechanochemical reactions of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (BDC2-) and lanthanide carbonates, Ln(2)(CO3)(3)center dot xH(2)O (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb) yield phase pure lanthanide coordination polymers, (Ln(0.5)Gd(0.5))(2)(1,4-BDC)(3)(H2O)(4) with Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, which are isostructural with Tb-2(1,4-BDC)(3)(H2O)(4) as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy. Upon excitation with UV light all three compounds display strong emissions, characteristic for the respective optically active lanthanide ion, namely, red for Eu3+, green for Tb3+ and orange-red for Sm3+. In case of the Tb3+-containing compound, the energy difference between the triplet energy level of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate ligand (BDC2-) allows for the most efficient BDC2--Tb3+ energy transfer. As a consequence, an intense green luminescence with rather long lifetime (0.81 ms) and high quantum yield (22%) is observed after allowed excitation of the BDC2- ligand. The compounds are paramagnetic with no onset of long range magnetic ordering down to liquid He temperatures.

  • Modeling of a Novel Biosensor with Integrated Mass and Electrochemical Sensing Capabilities
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE EMBS CONFERENCE ON BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND SCIENCES (IECBES). - : IEEE. - 9781467377911 ; , s. 420-425
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid development in technology and society has generated diverse developments in many fields including biosensors in healthcare application. Here, the design of integrated biosensor comprises mass sensing (Quartz Crystal Microbalance) and electrochemistry sensing (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, EIS and Cyclic Voltammetry, CV) will be presented. The integrated sensor system is developed based on the innovative use of the top electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) resonator as a working electrode for the electrochemistry technique. Integration of QCM with the electrochemistry technique is realized by fabricating a semicircular counter electrode near the upper electrode on the same side of the quartz crystal. CV and EIS measurement was conducted using finite element modeling, COMSOL (TM) 5.2 with the probe marker of 1 mmol L-1 of [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-). CV test was done to study the effect between increasing scan rate and peak current (anodic and cathodic) in observing the reversible electrochemical process. This observation is crucial in ensuring the electrochemical processes follow the Randles-Sevcik equation in characterizing the platform changes behavior. Later, EIS test was performed in order to measure the radius of the semicircle which reflects the charge transfer resistance (R-CT) of the redox marker. To show the effectiveness of this sensor, gold immobilization surface was electrochemically simulated and reported. Thus, an ultra-sensitive biosensor that capable to produce multi-analysis in the detection of biological targets in terms of electrochemical change of electrode interfaces, which is the crucial step towards the engineering of advanced bioelectronics.

  • Narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) : Characterization of emulsification and fibre properties
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: FUTURE FOODS. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-8335. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lupin is among the most promising plant-based food protein sources due to its high protein and fibre content. The fibre fraction, especially from seed coats, is often seen as low in value (discarded as waste or as animal feed) and greater knowledge on its composition and structure are crucial to increase its usefulness. However, only one model of lupin fibre structure exists in the literature. Our sample of Finnish-grown narrow-leafed lupin seed consisted of fibre (43.3%), protein (31.3%), fat (8.1%) and starch (0.2%). According to the sugar analysis, rhamnogalacturonan-I, with branches of arabinan and galactan, constituted the main pectin population in the fibre fraction. A revised model of the overall fibre structure is proposed. At concentrations of 0.75% and 1.0%, both unrefined and defatted flour of whole lupin seeds produced stable suspensions and oil-in-water emulsions, demonstrating their application as potential emulsifiers. This study presents the knowledge and opportunity to support sustainability through the utilization of whole lupin seed for future industrial applications.

  • Mining Frequent Patterns in Evolving Graphs
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Given a labeled graph, the frequent-subgraph mining (FSM) problem asks to find all the k-vertex subgraphs that appear with frequency greater than a given threshold. FSM has numerous appli- cations ranging from biology to network science, as it provides a compact summary of the characteristics of the graph. However, the task is challenging, even more so for evolving graphs due to the streaming nature of the input and the exponential time complexity of the problem. In this paper, we initiate the study of approximate FSM problem in both incremental and fully-dynamic streaming settings, where arbitrary edges can be added or removed from the graph. For each streaming setting, we propose algorithms that can extract a high-quality approximation of the frequent k-vertex subgraphs for a given threshold, at any given time instance, with high probability. In contrast to the existing state-of-the-art solutions that require iterating over the entire set of subgraphs for any update, our algorithms operate by maintaining a uniform sample of k-vertex subgraphs with optimized neighborhood-exploration procedures local to the updates. We provide theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithms and emprically demonstrate that the proposed algorithms generate high-quality results compared to baselines.

  • Low-cost and rapid prototyping of integrated electrochemical microfluidic platforms using consumer-grade off-the-shelf tools and materials
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lab on a Chip. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1473-0197 .- 1473-0189. ; 22:9, s. 1779-1792
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a low-cost, accessible, and rapid fabrication process for electrochemical microfluidic sensors. This work leverages the accessibility of consumer-grade electronic craft cutters as the primary tool for patterning of sensor electrodes and microfluidic circuits, while commodity materials such as gold leaf, silver ink pen, double-sided tape, plastic transparency films, and fabric adhesives are used as its base structural materials. The device consists of three layers, the silver reference electrode layer at the top, the PET fluidic circuits in the middle and the gold sensing electrodes at the bottom. Separation of the silver reference electrode from the gold sensing electrodes reduces the possibility of cross-contamination during surface modification. A novel approach in mesoscale patterning of gold leaf electrodes can produce generic designs with dimensions as small as 250 mu m. Silver electrodes with dimensions as small as 385 mu m were drawn using a plotter and a silver ink pen, and fluid microchannels as small as 300 mu m were fabricated using a sandwich of iron-on adhesives and PET. Device layers are then fused together using an office laminator. The integrated microfluidic electrochemical platform has electrode kinetics/performance of Delta E-p = 91.3 mV, I-pa/I-pc = 0.905, characterized by cyclic voltammetry using a standard ferrocyanide redox probe, and this was compared against a commercial screen-printed gold electrode (Delta E-p = 68.9 mV, I-pa/I-pc = 0.984). To validate the performance of the integrated microfluidic electrochemical platform, a catalytic hydrogen peroxide sensor and enzyme-coupled glucose biosensors were developed as demonstrators. Hydrogen peroxide quantitation achieves a limit of detection of 0.713 mM and sensitivity of 78.37 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2), while glucose has a limit of detection of 0.111 mM and sensitivity of 12.68 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2). This rapid process allows an iterative design-build-test cycle in under 2 hours. The upfront cost to set up the system is less than USD 520, with each device costing less than USD 0.12, making this manufacturing process suitable for low-resource laboratories or classroom settings.
