  • Networked Latency Sensitive Applications - Performance Issues between Cloud and Edge
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing demand for industrial automation has motivated the development of applications with strict latency requirements, namely, latency-sensitive applications. Such latency requirements can be satisfied by offloading computationally intensive tasks to powerful computing devices over a network at the cost of additional communication latency. Two major computing paradigms are considered for this: (i) cloud computing and (ii) edge computing. Cloud computing provides computation at remote datacenters, at the cost of longer communication latency. Edge computing aims at reducing communication latency by bringing computation closer to the users.  This doctoral dissertation mainly investigates relevant issues regarding communication latency trade-offs between the aforementioned paradigms in the context of latency-sensitive applications. This work advances the state of the art with three major contributions. First, we design a suite of scheduling algorithms which are performed on an edge device interposed between a co-located sensor network and remote applications running in cloud datacenters. These algorithms guarantee the fulfillment of latency-sensitive applications' requirements while maximizing the battery life of sensing devices.  Second, we estimate under what conditions latency-sensitive applications can be executed in cloud environments. From a broader perspective, we quantify round-trip times needed to access cloud datacenters all around the world. From a narrower perspective, we collect latency measurements to cloud datacenters in metropolitan areas where over 70% of the world's population lives. This Internet-wide large-scale measurements campaign allows us to draw statistically relevant conclusions concerning the readiness of the cloud environments to host latency-sensitive applications. Finally, we devise a method to quantify latency improvements that hypothetical edge server deployments could bring to users within a network. This is achieved with a thorough analysis of round-trip times and paths characterization resulting in the design of novel edge server placement algorithms. We show trade-offs between number of edge servers deployed and latency improvements experienced by users. This dissertation contributes to the understanding of the communication latency in terms of temporal and spacial distributions, its sources and implications on latency-sensitive applications.

  • Architectural Evolution of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) using Cloud Computing
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the advent of Smart Cities, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) has become an efficient way of offering an accessible, safe, and sustainable transportation system. Utilizing advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), ITS can maximize the capacity of existing transportation system without building new infrastructure. However, in spite of these technical feasibilities and significant performance-cost ratios, the deployment of ITS is limited in the real world because of several challenges associated with its architectural design. This thesis studies how to design a highly flexible and deployable architecture for ITS, which can utilize the recent technologies such as - cloud computing and the publish/subscribe communication model. In particular, our aim is to offer an ITS infrastructure which provides the opportunity for transport authorities to allocate on-demand computing resources through virtualization technology, and supports a wide range of ITS applications. We propose to use an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model to host large-scale ITS applications for transport authorities in the cloud, which reduces infrastructure cost, improves management flexibility and also ensures better resource utilization. Moreover, we use a publish/subscribe system as a building block for developing a low latency ITS application, which is a promising technology for designing scalable and distributed applications within the ITS domain. Although cloud-based architectures provide the flexibility of adding, removing or moving ITS services within the underlying physical infrastructure, it may be difficult to provide the required quality of service (QoS) which decrease application productivity and customer satisfaction, leading to revenue losses. Therefore, we investigate the impact of service mobility on related QoS in the cloud-based infrastructure. We investigate different strategies to improve performance of a low latency ITS application during service mobility such as utilizing multiple paths to spread network traffic, or deploying recent queue management schemes.Evaluation results from a private cloud testbed using OpenStack show that our proposed architecture is suitable for hosting ITS applications which have stringent performance requirements in terms of scalability, QoS and latency.

  • A Cross-Layer Perspective on Transport Protocol Performance in Wireless Networks
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Communication by wireless technologies has seen a tremendous growth in the last decades. Mobile phone technology and wireless broadband solutions are rapidly replacing the last-hop wireline connectivity for telephones and Internet access.  Research has, however, shown that Internet traffic can experience a performance degradation over wireless compared to wired networks.  The inherent properties of radio communication lead to a higher degree of unreliability, compared to communication by wire or fiber.  This can result in an increased amount of transmission errors, packet loss, delay and delay variations, which in turn affect the performance of the main Internet transport protocols TCP and UDP.  This dissertation examines the cross-layer relationship between wireless transmission and the resulting performance on the transport layer. To this end, experimental evaluations of TCP and UDP over a wireless 4G downlink system proposal are performed.  The experiment results show, in a holistic scenario, that link-level adaptive modulation, channel prediction, fast persistent link retransmissions, and channel scheduling, enables the transport protocols TCP and UDP to perform well and utilize the wireless link efficiently.  Further, a novel approach is proposed where a modified TCP receiver can choose to accept packets that are corrupted by bit errors. Results from network emulation experiments indicate that by accepting and acknowledging even small amounts of corrupted data, a much higher throughput can be maintained compared to standard TCP.

  • On Switchover Performance in Multihomed SCTP
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The emergence of real-time applications, like Voice over IP and video conferencing, in IP networks implies a challenge to the underlying infrastructure. Several real-time applications have requirements on timeliness as well as on reliability and are accompanied by signaling applications to set up, tear down and control the media sessions. Since neither of the traditional transport protocols responsible for end-to-end transfer of messages was found suitable for signaling traffic, the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) was standardized. The focus for the protocol was initially on telephony signaling applications, but it was later widened to serve as a general purpose transport protocol. One major new feature to enhance robustness in SCTP is multihoming, which enables for more than one path within the same association. In this thesis we evaluate some of the mechanisms affecting transmission performance in case of a switchover between paths in a multihomed SCTP session. The major part of the evaluation concerns a failure situation, where the current path is broken. In case of failure, the endpoint does not get an explicit notification, but has to react upon missing acknowledgements. The challenge is to distinguish path failure from temporary congestion to decide  when to switch to an alternate path. A too fast switchover may be spurious, which could reduce transmission performance, while a too late switchover also results in reduced transmission performance. This implies a tradeoff which involves several protocol as well as network parameters and we elaborate among these to give a coherent view of the parameters and their interaction. Further, we present a recommendation on how to tune the parameters to meet  telephony signaling requirements, still without violating fairness to other traffic. We also consider another angle of switchover performance, the startup on the alternate path. Since the available capacity is usually unknown to the sender, the transmission on a new path is started at a low rate and then increased as acknowledgements of successful transmissions return. In case of switchover in the middle of a media session the startup phase after a switchover could cause problems to the application. In multihomed SCTP the availability of the alternate path makes it feasible for the end-host to estimate the available capacity on the alternate path prior to the switchover. Thus, it would be possible to implement a more efficient startup scheme. In this thesis we combine different switchover scenarios with relevant traffic. For these combinations, we analytically evaluate and quantify the potential performance gain from utilizing an ideal startup mechanism as compared to the traditional startup procedure.

  • Transport-Layer Performance for Applications and Technologies of the Future Internet
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To provide Internet applications with good performance, the transport protocol TCP is designed to optimize the throughput of data transfers. Today, however, more and more applications rely on low latency rather than throughput. Such applications can be referred to as data-limited and are not appropriately supported by TCP. Another emerging problem is associated with the use of novel networking techniques that provide infrastructure-less networking. To improve connectivity and performance in such environments, multi-path routing is often used. This form of routing can cause packets to be reordered, which in turn hurts TCP performance. To address timeliness issues for data-limited traffic, we propose and experimentally evaluate several transport protocol adaptations. For instance, we adapt the loss recovery mechanisms of both TCP and SCTP to perform faster loss detection for data-limited traffic, while preserving the standard behavior for regular traffic. Evaluations show that the proposed mechanisms are able to reduce loss recovery latency with 30-50%. We also suggest modifications to the TCP state caching mechanisms. The caching mechanisms are used to optimize new TCP connections based on the state of old ones, but do not work properly for data-limited flows. Additionally, we design a SCTP mechanism that reduces overhead by bundling several packets into one packet in a more timely fashion than the bundling normally used in SCTP.To address the problem of packet reordering we perform several experimental evaluations, using TCP and state of the art reordering mitigation techniques. Although the studied mitigation techniques are quite good in helping TCP to sustain its performance during pure packet reordering events, they do not help when other impairments like packet loss are present.

  • The Otter (Lutra lutra) in Sweden : Contaminants and Health
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the 1950s the otter started to decline in numbers and distribution in Sweden and other parts of Europe. In 1972 a game law came into force, listing otter as a species that if found dead should be reported and sent to the authorities. The numbers of dead otters reported from different areas indicate population status and distribution. Between 1970 and 2012, 832 otters were sent to the authorities, the majority (66%) during the last ten years. Most were killed in traffic accidents or drowned in fishing gear. However, the main cause of the decline is believed to be environmental contaminants. Experimental data show that a PCB residue level in muscle tissue of 12 mg/kg lw causes reproductive impairment in mink (Neovison vison), suggesting reproductive problems also in the highly PCB-exposed otters in Sweden. Since the bans of PCB and DDT in the mid-1970s, concentrations of these substances in otter and fish have decreased and the otter population is increasing.Few pathological changes in otters have been found that can be related to high contaminant concentrations. However, we found a correlation between elevated PCB concentrations and alterations in bone mineral density. No relationship was seen between DDE and bone parameters. The decline of the otter coincided with the decline of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) and white-tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Sweden, all showing decreased reproductive outcome. Reproductive success started to increase for all of them around 1990 and during the same period concentrations of PCB and DDE have decreased in these species. The body condition among female otters has increased over the study period, indicating an improved health status. However, we found a high prevalence (71%) of cysts on the spermatic duct in otters collected between 1999 and 2012, possibly caused by endocrine disrupting chemicals.Although the organochlorine concentrations in otters have decreased, otters still face many problems. New threats to the otter population in Scandinavia are the perfluorinated chemicals, including PFOS and PFOA. Results in this thesis show an increasing trend for these compounds in otters up to 2011, including some extremely high concentrations of PFOS in otters from southern Sweden.

  • Empirical Evaluations of Semantic Aspects in Software Development
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents empirical research in the field of software development with a focus on handling semantic aspects. There is a general lack of empirical data in the field of software development. This makes it difficult for industry to choose an appropriate method for their particular needs. The lack of empirical data also makes it difficult to convey academic results to the industrial world. This thesis tries to remedy this problem by presenting a number of empirical evaluations that have been conducted to evaluate some common approaches in the field of semantics handling. The evaluations have produced some interesting results, but their main contribution is the addition to the body of knowledge on how to perform empirical evaluations in software development. The evaluations presented in this thesis include a between-groups controlled experiment, industrial case studies and a full factorial design controlled experiment. The factorial design seems like the most promising approach to use when the number of factors that need to be controlled is high and the number of available test subjects is low. A factorial design has the power to evaluate more than one factor at a time and hence to gauge the effects from different factors on the output.Another contribution of the thesis is the development of a method for handling semantic aspects in an industrial setting. A background investigation performed concludes that there seems to be a gap between what academia proposes and how industry handles semantics in the development process. The proposed method aims at bridging this gap. It is based on academic results but has reduced formalism to better suit industrial needs. The method is applicable in an industrial setting without interfering too much with the normal way of working, yet providing important benefits. This method is evaluated in the empirical studies along with other methods for handling semantics. In the area of semantic handling, further contributions of the thesis include a taxonomy for semantic handling methods as well as an improved understanding of the relation between semantic errors and the concept of contracts as a means of avoiding and handling these errors.

  • Latency Reduction for Soft Real-Time Traffic using SCTP Multihoming
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • More and more so-called soft real-time traffic is being sent over IP-based networks. The bursty, data-limited traffic pattern as well as the latency requirements from this traffic present challenges to the traditional communication techniques, designed for bulk traffic without considering latency. To meet the requirements from soft real-time traffic, in particular from telephony signaling, the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) was designed. Its support for connectivity to multiple networks, i.e., multihoming, provides robustness and opens up for concurrent multipath transfer (CMT) over multiple paths. Since SCTP is a general transport protocol, it also enables for handover of media sessions between heterogeneous networks. Migrating an ongoing session to a new network, as well as CMT with minimal latency, requires tuning of several protocol parameters and mechanisms. This thesis addresses latency reduction for soft real-time traffic using SCTP multihoming from three perspectives. The first focus is on latency for signaling traffic in case of path failure, where a path switch, a failover, occurs. We regard quick failure detection as well as rapid startup on the failover target path. The results indicate that by careful parameter tuning, the failover time may be significantly reduced. The second focus in the thesis is on latency for signaling traffic using CMT. To this end, we address sender-side scheduling. We evaluate some existing schedulers, and design a dynamic stream-aware scheduler. The results indicate that the dynamic stream-aware scheduler may provide significantly improved latency in unbalanced networks. Finally, we target multihomed SCTP to provide for handover of a media session between heterogeneous wireless networks in a mobile scenario. We implement a handover scheme and our investigation shows that SCTP could provide for seamless handover of a media session at walking speed.

  • Efficient and systematic network resource management
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The demand for network resources (e.g. forwarding capacity, buffer space) by increasingly used real-time multimedia applications is growing. Moreover, their stringent performance requirements (e.g. delay and jitter bounds) pose challenges on network resource management (RM). RM determines how available resources are modeled and distributed to achieve a performance goal such as assuring forwarding quality to real-time multimedia applications. Improvements to existing RM mechanisms can avoid performance limitations of networks by facilitating more efficient use of scarce resources. For example, in a vehicular to infrastructure (V2I) communication scenario that uses IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) lacking RM support for multicast, the 3G downlink quickly becomes a bottleneck although some information is addressed to multiple receivers. The main goal of this thesis is to develop RM algorithms and protocols that improve forwarding capacity utilization and remove performance bottlenecks. An additional goal is to improve the scalability of existing RM mechanisms. Three architectural paradigms are covered to demonstrate the advantages of efficient and systematic network RM: open access networks (OAN), next generation networks (NGN), and heterogeneous access networks (HAN). For OAN, a cross-layer signaling technique called parameter injection was developed. It reduces the signaling overhead and update time for real-time multimedia sessions over Wi-Fi while autonomously selecting the format and CODEC that best match the current resource settings. Within NGN, a resource management protocol is proposed for extending unicast signaling in IMS with multicast capabilities. The contribution uses adaptive and dynamic group size selection to improve resource utilization on the 3G downlink for the signaling and data planes. For HAN, an algorithm is proposed that predicts the best access network for achieving the highest QoE of a real-time multimedia session with the available QoS resources based on regression and statistical learning. In all three paradigms, the provided core contributions serve the common goal of achieving a performance edge in terms of efficiency and systematic operation with a limited amount of network resources.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE 30th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538681107 - 9781538681114 ; , s. 1-7
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Providing reliable internet connectivity to train passengers can be handled with onboard aggregation routers that use multiple external antennas to simultaneously convey user traffic over multiple links. This work studies the operational characteristics of a large-scale deployment of such a system. The examination focuses on how train velocity is associated with achieved link throughput, and how various interaction effects influence the relationship. A large data set collected over three years is analyzed, indicating that there is a systematic association between train velocity and link throughput that varies over the radio conditions and which is also linked to differences between operators.
