- This paper discusses academic leadership from a PCP- perspective. The proposed research is part of a planned project focusing on academic teacher-researcher-leader in Swedish higher education. Drawing on Kompf & Brown’s (2005) theories of teachers’ personal and professional ideas about the practice - superordinate constructs nexus, we aim to explore and gain a deeper understanding of their core identity (Denicolo, Long and Bradley-Cole 2016). This is related to being a good teacher-researcher-leader in the current politic-economic context of higher education: tensions between reforms based on managerial logic from the business world and the pedagogic processes informed by professional academic logic (Pettersen, 2015), have an impact on all aspects of the academic role.

- The introductory chapter is designed to set the scene for the different contributing chapters in the book Language Matters in Higher Education Contexts – Policy and Practice. Two overarching themes, ‘internationalisation’ and ‘societal responsibility,’ are identified in relation to language matters in higher education. These themes are both intertwined and nestled together, which sometimes causes significant tensions or fluxing borders. Within these chapters, researchers from different higher education institutions in several European countries bring up emerging and current language issues relating to the ever-increasing urge for universities to be and become international.

- This chapter reviews and presents doctoral education in Sweden in a national and longitudinal comparative perspective. By exploring and analysing national policy documents as well as twelve institutional General Syllabi for Doctor of Philosophy from the discipline of Education (1971-2021), we present a historical analysis of changes, during the past 50 years, from an independent doctoral apprentice to an employed doctoral researcher. We identified three themes in this development: schoolification, increasing interest in stress management, and relevance in terms of professional competences. It was concluded that Swedish doctoral education is increasingly regulated at the cost of doctoral researchers’ individual autonomy.

- Doctoral Education as if People Matter – Critical Issues for the Future features international authors of research in, of and with doctoral research. It is a book with a focus on the people who matter therein: the doctoral researcher, the supervisor/advisor and the doctoral supporters/research developers. With the view of improving doctoral education, contributors from diverse cultural, political and disciplinary contexts critically analyse challenges and opportunities that impact on the experience of doctoral researchers and university staff. Readers are invited to consider their own circumstances and how presented policies, procedures, values and practices, both common and unique, might either detract from or enhance their performance and wellbeing. - All good social science researchers recognise that each investigative paradigm and their respective research tools (e.g. experiments, surveys, interviews, observations, questionnaires) is limited in its exploratory power but especially by its dependence on the interests, perspectives and skills of the researchers employing it. They determine the research questions pursued and the questions asked of the respondents. Constructivist researchers however, though they too focus on an area they deem deserving of research and carry their own biases, seek to explore the respondents' perspectives of those domains, what they consider important and construe from their knowledge and life experiences and why they act as they do. Participants in research also bring to the task their own orientations, including their suspicions about researchers' motives, their willingness to take part in the investigation and their personal gains from doing so. When the aim of the research is agentic change, these are critical considerations for research design, data analysis and interpretation. This chapter, after summarising the main tenets of personal and social constructivist theory, explores and evaluates constructivist methodology, illustrating benefits and limitations through examples from research practice of its tools and analytical procedures from research conducted by the authors and their doctoral researchers across and between disciplines and levels in higher education. Techniques used include repertory grids, narrative and pictorial methods used to study, inter alia, staff development issues and transformative doctoral learning. Caveats emerging from practice will be included that limit and focus appropriately the collection, analysis and interpretation of results. Finally, arguments are presented for why, when and how to adopt, or indeed to avoid, these approaches and methods within such research.
