  • How do consumers make the cultural geography of a 'low-end' street? : The case of Sodergatan: a high street at the urban margins
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research examines the practices of consumers that are made possible by a 'low-end' street, and how these shopping practices in turn shape and maintain a high street at the urban margins. It locates itself within the academic inquiries of cultural geographies of retail.Södergatan is the field of the study, the main shopping street in the stigmatized southern part of city of Helsingborg in Sweden, which was first established as a working-class neighborhood. Never enjoyed being a legitimate part of the commercial city center, the street has further been excluded recently due to contemporary retail restructuring. Today it mostly hosts so called immigrant entrepreneurships, service-based premises and convenience stores. Södergatan is a typical neighborhood commercial street, which can be found in almost any city. In this sense, the research takes the mission of shedding light to consumer dynamics of long-neglected, unglamorous, yet indispensible, organic parts of urban life. The study theoretically draws upon “practice theory”, that has been proven to supply a solid framework in exploring people’s everyday shopping activities. The major method employed will be “video-ethnography” because of its capability to synchronically appreciate consumer practices, consumer reflections and the material environment of the street.

  • Making of a Community of Learning at the Times of Solitude
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Higher Education in the European context has been transformed radically since 1990s, partly in line with global political and economic trends. In the Swedish context these trends also manifested itself, among other things, in how teaching is practiced and valued. The managerial and paradigmatic shift altered the balance between teaching and research in the favour of the latter. This happened while monetary resources assigned to teaching at the universities proportionally diminished at the national level. Mentioned professional and monetary degrading resulted in reduction of contact-hours for university students -particularly for students of social sciences and humanities in Sweden, misrecognition of teaching skills at the institutional level, and treatment of teaching as a burden among academic staff. These radical changes accompanied with, and partially legitimized by, a novel teaching and learning philosophy which effectively criticized old-school lecture-based teaching built on unidimensional knowledge transfer. It promoted instead self-learning and championed interactive teaching. However, according to various reports, students spend less and less time for learning, which is coming closer to the state of threating the overall teaching and learning quality in the higher education in Sweden. In this paper, I analyse the teaching and learning practices in a course that I am responsible for at the bachelor level, in the background of abovementioned paradigm shift. Specifically, I discuss two teaching forms introduced and experimented in the course, discussion seminars and workshops, which aimed to improve the quality of the course learning outcome, encourage overall engagement of students, social learning, and skill transfer. Discussions focused on applying course literature on to empirical cases, and workshops included topics such as grading a paper, analysing a text, and writing an essay. While doing this, I refer to a theoretical literature develop around the concept of “social practices”, in particular “communities of practices”. Within this literature the social and cultural aspects of learning is accentuated, and the significance of embodied learning by doing together is highlighted. I position the practice-based epistemological and pedagogical perspective as an alternative to the established dichotomy of traditional lecture-based teaching versus self-learning.

  • Modes of Shopping Constituting a Local Street: A video-ethnography of shopping as a practice
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the last decades spatiotemporal manifestations of shopping are changed radically in conjunction with proliferation of car usage, internationalization of retail, and establishment of out-of-town malls. The social, cultural, and economic backgrounds of this axis alteration and its implication to the city life have been discussed thoroughly. However, the main empirical focus laid mostly on the mainstream and spectacular geographies of shopping. There is little literature on how shopping is enacted in “other” shopping geographies, particularly on local shopping streets.Södergatan, established as the main street of a working-class district in Helsingborg, Sweden, after going through modernization phases, today it mostly hosts so-called migrant entrepreneurships, service-based premises, and grocery stores. This study examines the major modes of shopping on this local shopping street in order to understand how shopping geographies outside of mainstream ensure their relevance. It contributes to the literature on shopping geographies from a cultural perspective, particularly on the co-constitutive interrelation between enactments of shopping and arrangements of shopping places. While doing this, the study engages in “practice theory”, which supplies a profound conceptual vocabulary and dynamic epistemological gaze for concentrating on shopping as the main analytical unit. The major method employed in the research is video-ethnography, due to its capability to synchronically appreciate enactments of shopping, shoppers’ reflections, the sensory and material environment of the street, and the movement within. The research shows that there are some major place-specific modes of shopping that are enacted in the street and in the district, and these modes of shopping, bundling with each other, materially and sensorially co-constitute the street into a meaningful, integral and convivial part of the city.
