  • 4MOST : Project overview and information for the First Call for Proposals
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Messenger. - : European Southern Observatory. - 0722-6691. ; 175, s. 3-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs (R = λ/Δλ ~ 6500), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph (R ~ 20 000). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. Finally, the processes, schedules, and policies concerning the selection of ESO Community Surveys are presented, commencing with a singular opportunity to submit Letters of Intent for Public Surveys during the first five years of 4MOST operations.

  • SCRT1 is a novel beta cell transcription factor with insulin regulatory properties
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0303-7207 .- 1872-8057. ; 521
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we show that scratch family transcriptional repressor 1 (SCRT1), a zinc finger transcriptional regulator, is a novel regulator of beta cell function. SCRT1 was found to be expressed in beta cells in rodent and human islets. In human islets, expression of SCRT1 correlated with insulin secretion capacity and the expression of the insulin (INS) gene. Furthermore, SCRT1 mRNA expression was lower in beta cells from T2D patients. siRNA-mediated Scrt1 silencing in INS-1832/13 cells, mouse- and human islets resulted in impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and decreased expression of the insulin gene. This is most likely due to binding of SCRT1 to E-boxes of the Ins1 gene as shown with ChIP. Scrt1 silencing also reduced the expression of several key beta cell transcription factors. Moreover, Scrt1 mRNA expression was reduced by glucose and SCRT1 protein was found to translocate between the nucleus and the cytosol in a glucose-dependent fashion in INS-1832/13 cells as well as in a rodent model of T2D. SCRT1 was also regulated by a GSK3β-dependent SCRT1-serine phosphorylation. Taken together, SCRT1 is a novel beta cell transcription factor that regulates insulin secretion and is affected in T2D.

  • Inelastic O plus H collisions and the O I 777 nm solar centre-to-limb variation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP SCIENCES S A. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 616
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The O I 777 nm triplet is a key diagnostic of oxygen abundances in the atmospheres of FGK-type stars; however, it is sensitive to departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The accuracy of non-LTE line formation calculations has hitherto been limited by errors in the inelastic O+H collisional rate coefficients; several recent studies have used the Drawin recipe, albeit with a correction factor S-H that is calibrated to the solar centre-to-limb variation of the triplet. We present a new model oxygen atom that incorporates inelastic O+H collisional rate coefficients using an asymptotic two-electron model based on linear combinations of atomic orbitals, combined with a free electron model based on the impulse approximation. Using a 3D hydrodynamic STAGGER model solar atmosphere and 3D non-LTE line formation calculations, we demonstrate that this physically motivated approach is able to reproduce the solar centre-to-limb variation of the triplet to 0.02 dex, without any calibration of the inelastic collisional rate coefficients or other free parameters. We infer log epsilon(O) = 8.69 +/- 0.03 from the triplet alone, strengthening the case for a low solar oxygen abundance.

  • Synthesis of highly elastic biodegradable poly(urethane urea)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 8:3, s. 905-911
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linear poly(urethane urea) containing a biodegradable soft segment and a hard segment built solely from methyl-2,6-diisocyanatehexanoate (LDI) is presented, using a procedure where no chain extender is required. By having LDI in excess, together with a soft segment, and adding water in the vapor phase continuously creates amines in situ resulting in hard segments containing multiple LDI units linked via urea linkages. As soft segments, polymers of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and copolymers of TMC, ε-caprolactone, and d,l-lactic acid (DLLA) were used. High inherent viscosity, 0.95−1.65 dL/g, was afforded even when DLLA-containing soft segments were used, which usually undergo aminolysis. With a hard segment content between 12% and 18%, all of the materials showed very high elongation at breakage, ranging from 1600% to 4700%, and an elastic modulus from 2.1 to 140 MPa. This one-pot synthesis is simple and has now been shown to be applicable to a large number of systems.
