  • Doubly-Block Circulant Kernel Matrix Exploitation in Convolutional Accelerators
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE 66th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, MWSCAS 2023. - 9798350302103 ; , s. 236-240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a novel algorithmic and hardware co-design approach specifically tailored for efficient 2D convolution implementations, a crucial operation in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our method addresses the limitations of existing software-based solutions and hardware-based architectures, delivering significant improvements in asymptotic behavior for generic convolution cases. By leveraging the distinctive geometry of doubly block circulant unrolled kernel matrices, our approach eliminates the need for input and weight buffers, optimizes output memory usage, and minimizes redundant memory accesses. A comprehensive comparative analysis with state-of-the-art techniques showcases the key advantages and superior performance of our proposed method, achieving substantial reductions in memory requirements and high throughput.

  • Energy-Efficient Application-Specific Instruction-Set Processor for Feature Extraction in Smart Vision Systems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Conference Record - Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers. - 1058-6393. - 9781665458283 ; 2021-October, s. 324-328
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart vision sensor systems enable many computer vision applications such as autonomous drones and wearable devices. These battery-powered gadgets have very stringent power consumption requirements. Close-to-sensor feature extraction compressing the full image into descriptive keypoints, is crucial as it allows for several design optimizations. First, the amount of necessary on-chip memory can be lessened. Second, the volume of data that needs to be exchanged between nodes in Internet of Things (IoT) applications can also be reduced. This work explores the usage of an Application Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) tailored to perform energy-efficient feature extraction in real-time. The ASIP features a Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) central core comprising one RV32I RISCV and three vector slots. The on-chip memory sub-system implements parallel multi-bank memories with near-memory data shuffling to enable single-cycle multi-pattern vector access. As a case study, Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) is used to evaluate the proposed architecture. We show that the architecture supports VGA-resolution images at 140 Frames-Per-Second (FPS), for one scale, reducing the number of memory accesses by 2 orders of magnitude comparing to other embedded general-purpose architectures.

  • Quadrotor Control on SU(2)× R3with SLAM Integration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE Conference on Control Technology and Applications, CCTA 2022. - 9781665473385 ; , s. 291-298
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a trajectory tracking controller for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) configured on SU(2) × R3, and relate this result to a family of geometric tracking controllers on SO(3) × R3. The theoretical results are verified in several simulation examples, and the controller is subsequently implemented in practice and integrated with a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system through an onboard extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed con-trol system can be used for inventorying tasks in a supermarket environment without the need for external positioning systems.

  • Multivariable controller tuning
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the American Control Conference, 1998. - : IEEE. - 0780345304 ; , s. 3514-3518
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of tuning individual loops in a multivariable controller is investigated. It is shown how the performance of a specific loop relates to a row in the controller matrix. Several interpretations of this relation are given. An algorithm is also presented that estimates the model required for the tuning via a relay feedback experiment. The algorithm does not need any prior information about the system or the controller. The results are illustrated by an example.

  • The Association of Gum Bleeding with Respiratory Health in a Population Based Study from Northern Europe
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background There is little knowledge about how oral and respiratory health is interrelated even though the mucosa of the oral cavity and airways constitutes a continuum and the exposures to these are partly similar. Aims To investigate whether gum bleeding is related to asthma, respiratory symptoms and self-reported COPD. Methods A postal questionnaire including questions about respiratory and oral health was sent to general population samples in seven Northern European centres. In 13,409 responders, gum bleeding when brushing teeth was reported always/often by 4% and sometimes by 20%. Logistic regressions accounted for age, smoking, educational level, centre and gender. Effects of BMI, cardio-metabolic diseases, early life factors, gastro-oesophageal reflux, dental hygiene, nasal congestion, and asthma medication were addressed. Results Gum bleeding always/often was significantly associated with >= 3 asthma symptoms (OR 2.58, 95% CI 2.10-3.18), asthma (1.62 [1.23-2.14]) and self-reported COPD (2.02 [1.283.18]). There was a dose-response relationship between respiratory outcomes and gum bleeding frequency (>= 3 symptoms: gum bleeding sometimes 1.42 [1.25-1.60], often/always 2.58 [2.10-3.18]), and there was no heterogeneity between centres (p(heterogeneity) = 0.49). None of the investigated risk factors explained the associations. The observed associations were significantly stronger among current smokers (p(interaction) = 0.004). Conclusions A consistent link between gum bleeding and obstructive airways disease was observed, not explained by common risk factors or metabolic factors. We speculate that oral pathogens might have unfavourable impact on the airways, and that the direct continuity of the mucosa of the oral cavity and the airways reflects a pathway that might provide novel opportunities for interventions.
