  • Improving the recycling rate of the construction industry
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies. - : International Committee of the SCMT conferences.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) accounts for approximately 25-30% of all waste generated across Europe each year. However, Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC requires from all EU member states to achieve at least 70% re-use, recycling or other recovery of non-hazardous CDW by 2020. In response, the Horizon 2020 RE4 Project (REuse and REcycling of CDW materials and structures in energy efficient pREfabricated elements for building REfurbishment and construction) consortium was set up. Its main aims are to assess the quality of various CDW fractions (e.g. mineral aggregate, timber, plastics, silt & clay), improve the quality of mineral aggregates and develop different building elements/components which contain at least 65% of CDW. Innovative building concepts will also be developed in an effort to improve recycling rates of future buildings through the use of prefabrication and modular design. The developed products and technologies will be assessed in a number of test sites by building 2-storey demonstration houses.

  • Novel construction and demolition waste (CDW) treatment and uses to maximize reuse and recycling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advances in Building Energy Research. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1751-2549 .- 1756-2201. ; 15:2, s. 253-269
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EU Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC states that all member states should take all necessary measures in order to achieve at least 70% re-use, recycling or other recovery of non-hazardous Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) by 2020. In response, the Horizon 2020 RE4 project consortium (REuse and REcycling of CDW materials and structures in energy efficient pREfabricated elements for building REfurbishment and construction) consisting of 12 research and industrial partners across Europe, plus a research partner from Taiwan, was set up. For its success, the approach of the Project was manifold, developing sorting technologies to first improve the quality of CDW-derived aggregate. Simultaneously, CDW streams were assessed for quality and novel applications developed for aggregate, timber and plastic waste in a variety of products including structural and non-structural elements. With all products considered, innovative building concepts have been designed in a bid to improve future reuse and recycling of the products by promoting prefabricated construction methods and modular design to ease future recycling and increase value of the construction industry. The developed technologies and products have been put to the test in different test sites in building a two-storey house containing at least 65% of CDW. © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s)..

  • Superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric Nb0.18Re0.82 thin films probed by transport and tunneling experiments
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 94:10

    • Superconducting thin films of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Nb0.18Re0.82 were successfully deposited by UHV sputtering technique. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the films are polycrystalline, with a preferential (nn0) orientation and the lattice parameter in agreement with the expected single alpha-Mn cubic phase. • Controllable morphology of flux avalanches in microstructured superconductors
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 89:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The morphology of abrupt bursts of magnetic flux into superconducting films with engineered periodic pinning centers (antidots) has been investigated. Guided flux avalanches of thermomagnetic origin develop a treelike structure, with the main trunk perpendicular to the borders of the sample, while secondary branches follow well-defined directions determined by the geometrical details of the underlying periodic pinning landscape. Strikingly, we demonstrate that in a superconductor with relatively weak random pinning the morphology of such flux avalanches can be fully controlled by proper combinations of lattice symmetry and antidot geometry. Moreover, the resulting flux patterns can be reproduced, to the finest details, by simulations based on a phenomenological thermomagnetic model. In turn, this model can be used to predict such complex structures and to estimate physical variables of more difficult experimental access, such as the local values of temperature and electric field.

  • Investigation of dark count rate in NbRe microstrips for single photon detection
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science and Technology. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 36:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superconducting microstrip single photon detectors (SMSPDs) received great interest since they are expected to combine the excellent performance of superconducting nanostrip single photon detectors with the possibility to cover large active areas using low-cost fabrication techniques. In this work, we fabricated SMSPDs based on NbRe to investigate the role of vortices in the dark counts events in this innovative material and in devices with micrometer size. We realized devices with different layouts, namely single microstrips and pairs of parallel microstrips. The energy barriers related to the motion of single vortices or vortex-antivortex pairs, responsible of detection events, have been determined and compared with the ones of similar devices based on different materials, such as MoSi, WSi and NbN. The analysis confirms the high potential of NbRe for the realization of superconducting single photon detectors with large areas.

  • Long-term improvement of quality of life during growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy in adults with GH deficiency, as measured by questions on life satisfaction-hypopituitarism (QLS-H)
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 1945-7197 .- 0021-972X. ; 89:4, s. 1684-1693
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Questions on Life Satisfaction-Hypopituitarism (QLS-H) is a new quality-of-life (QoL) questionnaire developed for adults with hypopituitarism. To determine the effects of long-term GH treatment on QoL, we evaluated QLS-H Z-scores in 576 adult patients with GH deficiency (GHD) enrolled in HypoCCS, an international observational study, using data from five countries in which comparative QLS-H data from the general population were available. Baseline QLS-H Z-scores were significantly lower in GH-deficient patients than in the general population of the same age, gender, and nationality. Z-scores were also significantly lower in female patients vs. males (P=0.006) and in adult-onset vs. childhood-onset GHD (P=0.002). Multivariate analysis associated female gender, multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies, low serum IGF-I values (<75 μg/liter), and concomitant antidepressant medication with low baseline Z-scores. QLS-H Z-scores increased from -1.02&PLUSMN;1.43 (SD) at baseline to -0.25&PLUSMN;1.34 (SD) after 1 yr of GH treatment (P<0.001) and were no longer significantly different from the general population after 4 yr of treatment. There was no correlation between change in Z-score and GH dose or changes in IGF-I and IGF binding protein-3 during treatment. This study demonstrates that 1) improvements in QoL, as measured by the QLS-H, are maintained during long-term GH replacement therapy of adults with GHD, and 2) the QLS-H is a useful tool for evaluating QoL in hypopituitary patients treated in clinical practice. The authors suggest that evaluation of QoL should be a part of the routine clinical management of adult GH-deficient patients, complementing the measurement of surrogate biological markers or other clinical end points.
