    • While the concepts of planning and scheduling seem to be adequately discussed in the project management literature, relatively few examples of factors specifically affecting the performance of planning and scheduling are to be found. The study reported in this paper investigated a set of factors identified as enablers and barriers to successful project planning and scheduling of construction projects in Oman. The study adopted a questionnaire-based survey to measure the impact of each factor. The data were analysed using the relative impact (or importance) index (RII). On the basis of RII rankings, the results revealed that the identified enablers and barriers were all considered significant. This could imply that all of the factors should be considered equally from the perspective of project planning and scheduling, including schedule control. In addition, the results suggest that project managers should pay attention to the more significant barriers to mitigate their potential impacts on planning and scheduling. Recommendations for mitigating those barriers are presented. The study provides useful insights into the impact of various factors on the planning and scheduling performance of construction projects in Oman and how improvement might be achieved.

    • Purpose: The implementation and control processes of project planning and scheduling involve a wide range of methods and tools. Despite the development and modification and integration of the project management theory with newer scheduling approaches in particular, practitioners’ views on the efficiency and effectiveness of these methods and tools differ. This situation can be attributed in part to a lack of understanding of the most appropriate basis for implementing these methods and tools. This study, therefore, aims to overcome this deficiency by conceptualizing and adopting a taxonomy of planning and scheduling methods.Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on a review and discourse analysis of the literature covering a large number of theoretical and empirical studies. The underlying theories of various planning and scheduling methods were analyzed with respect to the taxonomy criteria adopted in the study.Findings: Using the taxonomy, the key characteristics of planning and scheduling methods considered in this study were identified and interpreted. These included concepts and theories; key features; suitability and usability; and benefits and limitations. Overall, the findings suggest that project managers should consider taxonomy as a support tool for selecting and prioritizing the most appropriate method or combination of methods for managing their projects. Recommendations include the need for more advanced or multi-dimensional taxonomies to cope with the diversity of project type and size.Originality/value: The results of the study allow project managers to improve their current practices by utilizing taxonomy when considering the implementation of planning and scheduling methods. Moreover, taxonomy can be considered as a tool to promote learning on the part of those less experienced in planning and scheduling. Taxonomy can be considered as an initial platform for further research in this area. © 2016, © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

    • Planning and scheduling are considered as one of the most difficult but most important processes from perspectives of project management. These processes involve implementation of a widerange of planning methods used by different organizations with various levels of planning knowledge. The planning methods for scheduling can be classified as traditional methods (e.g. line of balance, Gantt chart and critical path) and modern methods (e.g. last planner and critical chain). Over time these methods had advanced from paper based to computer based. However, some project planners still prefer using the traditional methods despite other new alternatives. Users of those methods have different perspectives about the efficiency and effectiveness of the different planning methods used to manage different projects. Evidences from the secondary data found from extensive literatures have been used to assess the planning and scheduling methods mentioned above. A taxonomy describing each of the method in terms of their theories, key features, application areas, benefits and limitations is presented. The preliminary outcome of this paper may provide a tool to aid organizations in selecting and prioritizing the most appropriate methods to be developed and implemented in planning and scheduling of their projects. It also initializes a theoretical base for more rapid taxonomy studies on the use of different planning and scheduling approaches. As an overall, the present paper reminds practitioners of common ground about its important insights on how such taxonomy studies have potential to make scope of those methods and tools clearer, especially when they compare among them within the same application contexts.

    • There are many challenges associated with the construction processes of planning and scheduling. These challenges are relevant to all project parties or stakeholders and therefore management roles or organisational behaviours of those parties have to be properly considered and assessed. With this in mind, this study is aimed at assessing practitioners' perspectives on the current significance and applicability of a set of criteria or factors concerned with management roles and organisational behaviours of the different parties based on construction projects in Oman. The study has adopted a quantitative approach in which a questionnaire-based survey was chosen and conducted to gather responses from construction projects in Oman. A total of 67 valid responses were analysed based on the rankings and means of the respondents' perspectives on the significance and applicability of the identified factors to current practice. The overall findings indicated that all investigated factors should be critically considered as equally important to the development process of planning and scheduling. Nevertheless, the findings implied that a management priority should be given to the most important factors significantly affecting project planning and scheduling. The study provides some useful recommendations on how to improve project management roles and organisational behaviours in planning and scheduling on the part of key project parties.

    • Universitet har vanligen utvecklat etiska riktlinjer för undervisning, men dessa fokuserar ofta på att avskräcka från oärlighet genom upptäckt och bestraffning i stället för att uppmuntra till ett fruktbart beteende. Universitet, fakulteter, institutioner och lärare har ett stort ansvar för att sprida kunskap om akademisk hederlighet till sina studenter. En internetbaserad enkätundersökning genomfördes bland lärare på tre olika program på LTH (Ekosystemteknik(W), Elektroteknik(E) respektive Industridesign(ID)) för att undersöka när och hur lärarna förmedlar kunskaper kring akademisk hederlighet till studenterna samt hur lärarna anser att studenterna bör få träning i att utveckla akademisk hederlighet jämfört med hur studenterna faktiskt tränas i det. Enkäten skickades ut till 65 lärare och svarsfrekvensen var 71%, 47% och 40% för W-, ID- respektive E-programmet. Undersökningen visar en tydlig skillnad mellan de olika programmen. På W- och ID-programmen tar ca 40% av de svarande lärarna upp akademisk hederlighet vid kursintroduktionen, medan endast ca 10% på E-programmet gör det. På W-programmet behandlar 80% av lärarna ämnet i samband med att de introducerar övningar och uppgifter, medan motsvarande siffra för de andra programmen är endast ca 40%. W-lärarna utmärker sig också genom att en betydligt större andel påminner studenterna om vikten av akademisk hederlighet mer än en gång under kursen. Många av lärarna anser att det vore bra om akademisk hederlighet gjordes till ett obligatoriskt element i programmet men samtidigt är det bara ett fåtal lärare som identifierar att studenterna får träning i akademisk hederlighet på detta sätt. I de fria kommentarerna tar en lärare upp vikten av en tydlig progression i kunskaperna om skrivande och referenshantering under programmets gång. Undersökningen pekar på att det finns betydande skillnader i hur frågeställningar kring akademisk hederlighet hanteras inom olika program och därmed behov av åtgärder för en ökad gemensam förståelse av vad akademisk hederlighet innebär samt entydig kunskapsförmedlingen till studenterna.

  • Employing Foreign Workers In Sweden Construction Sector

    • The enlargement of the European Union provides opportunities for members to be mobile in seeking various forms of permanent and non-permanent employment, particularly temporary work and contract labour. These changing conditions require quick reactions, overcoming soft issues such as language barriers and coping with culture clashes and political issues that could create problems for the worker. While the influx of foreign workers may bring much needed skills and meet the labour demands of the sector, the existence of an irregular workforce can have an impact on labour market conditions, local economy and health and safety measures. Currently, the use of foreign workers and contractors on construction sites has been identified as one of the major issues confronting clients, employers and unions. This paper will present the benefits and disadvantages of employing foreign workers and contractors in the Swedish construction sector and why the need to examine their working environment.

  • Incentives to catalyse green building certifications for building construction

    • In the construction industry, sustainability and greening is more than just a passing trend. It has become an important agenda since the building sector has immense environmental impacts. It accounts for 42% of final energy consumption and about 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions. In order to meet these challenges, the construction industry needs to change and adopt new working procedures which take the environment into consideration. Since studies have shown that sustainable development contributes to economic, environmental and social benefits for organisations, it is apparent to attract developers and property owners to invest in green buildings. The aim of this study is to examine incentives offered to environmental certification systems for building that give credibility to the environmental work. The discussions will begin by investigating current incentives in existing environmental certifications system such as Green Building, Miljöbyggnad, LEED and BREEAM. Additionally, the study will appraise the incentives that are offered in successful energy savings sectors such as clean vehicles and other examples from the USA local governments. The study had conducted interviews with 15 environmental experts’ to gain better understanding on existing green certifications and new incentives that can be infused to promote green buildings. Results demonstrate that there are no clear direct financial incentives offered to green building investors. However intangible incentives gained from green building such as: clear goals, systematic mode of operation, higher property value, lower operating costs, marketing profits, higher rental income and higher status for certified green buildings are driving factors for this presently largely voluntary practice. Likewise, the lessons learned from other successful energy savings sectors enable the authors to conclude that proposing incentives such as favourable loan and insurance, better insurance premiums, speedier document processing, attractive tax incentives can act as a catalyst in stimulating the development of more green certified buildings.

  • Issues confronting women participation in the construction industry

    • This paper raises the issues confronting the minority cohort’s participation in the construction industry. Women in construction are seen as the wrong gender to be around for the construction occupations require not only manual dexterity but physical strength. Currently, the industry is employing less than 10% of the female in the workforce with even lower participation in crafts and trade. This paper discussed about the current women participation in construction focusing on the European Union (EU) 27 member countries. Additionally, issues and barriers preventing women entering and retaining in the industry was also debated. A strong finding from the paper is that it is not the technical skills that need proving but rather comprising their identity as women to meet the demands of the workplace and having the ability to fit into the accepted behaviour of the workplace. There is also concern among the women workers of having to balance between successful career and family lives. Lastly, the paper highlights suggestions to create a better path for women’s participation and retention in this male-dominated zone. Among them are bringing more female role models at the lower education level to aspire career in construction, clearer equal opportunities at the workplace and stronger roles of the social partners.
