  • Den kroppsliga läsningen : Bildningsperspektiv på litteraturundervisning
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores aspects of reading literature, embodiment and Bildung with a specific focus on literature education in compulsory school. The main purpose of this study is to discuss and problematize literature education in Swedish compulsory schools by focusing on embodiment and Bildung. The theoretical framework of this thesis draws on hermeneutics and phenomenology, and especially on the concepts of experience and the lived body. Through four studies, the thesis investigates different aspects of literature reading and literature teaching. In the first study the focus is on the curriculum of the school subject Swedish, while the second study investigates teachers' classroom practices when teaching literature in years three and five. In the third study, the focus is on pupils in years four and five, who enjoy reading fiction, and their stories and experiences of reading. The fourth study is based on empirical material from the third study that is combined with empirical material presented earlier in order to highlight possible approaches to Bildung in literature education in the school subject Swedish. The methods used in the thesis are textual analysis (study 1), observation (study 2) and interviews (study 3 and 4). The overall result shows that children's reading experiences can be considered a possible way of initiating a process of Bildung, and further that this process has bodily dimensions. The study also reveals that there is a discrepancy between how literature reading is articulated in the Swedish curriculum, on the one hand, and how reading is experienced by pupils and how reading education take place in practice, on the other. Possible implications of this discrepancy is that the formative potential does not reach all pupils.

  • "All people are different, but everyone is of equal worth" : Three utopian manifestoes by Öyvind Fahlström (1928–76)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Utopia : The Fourth Bi-Annual Conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies. - : European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies. ; , s. 110-110
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 1953 the Swedish concrete poet and internationally renowned avant-garde artist Öyvind Fahlström (1928–76) wrote the worlds first manifesto for concrete poetry, inspired by the historical avant-garde and the neo-avant-garde that at the same time was on its rise, but also by Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète. What is little known, though, is that this manifesto was followed by a string of others, of which I here will discuss three utopian manifests from 1962, 1966 and 1976. The first manifesto took its incentive from the exhibition Movement in Art, and introduces radical ideas about involving the audience in the artwork/s itself. The intention was to erase the barrier between artist, artwork and audience. In the two later manifestoes Fahlström – after his move to New York 1961 – takes a more explicit political stance. In the manifesto from 1966 he draws up a Utopia without war, commercialism, and poverty, where citizens have equal rights and live in ”the ecstatic society” with free sex and drugs, ideas a few years ahead of the 1968 revolt. And, finally, in the last manifesto he visualises a totally new society, based on Equality, freedom, decentralisation, work as a creative activity, and free services and goods.

  • Authenticity and Verfremdung : Öyvind Fahlström’s performance Kisses Sweeter than Wine (1966)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sens public. - Montreal : University of Montreal. - 2104-3272. ; :2020/03/23, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Performance art has been regarded as solidly rooted in the “Hierund Jetzt”, asserted by Walter Benjamin as the only remaining conditionfor the Aura. However, as Philip Auslander observes, every performancetoday is always already mediatized in one way or another, and still we might experience liveness and then also authenticity. Mediatizationis, therefore, a (necessary) condition for authenticity. Inmy discussion on the Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström’s (1928–76) performanceKisses Sweeter than Wine 1966, I nonetheless argue that noteven the use of Verfremdungseffekts in avant-garde performance disruptsthe construction of authenticity, even though this effect is usedto attack the (presupposed) media-transparency believed to be necessaryfor an “authentic” experience. In his use of new technology anddifferent broadcasting media, Fahlström was a forerunner for mediaart. The intermedial intricacy can be fully understood and discussedonly in our own information age. His and other similar experiments inthe 1960s are important links in the genealogy of today’s networked, global and multiscreen world, since they constitute early confluencesof cybernetics, art and media. This is best seen in his performance, which was part of 9 Evenings. Theatre and Engineering arranged, in1966, by Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) at the 69th RegimentArmory in New York. Fahlström mixes performance on stagewith a plethora of mediated and mediatized events, which results ina show that is characterized by strong Verfremdungseffekts, yet stillgives rise to an experience of authenticity.
