  • Off-odorous compounds produced by molds on oatmeal agar : Identification and relation to other growth characteristics
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. - Washington : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0021-8561 .- 1520-5118. ; 41:11, s. 2104-2111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ten Penicillium and Aspergillus species, four with a strong musty off-odor and six reference fungi without any characteristic odor, were cultivated on oatmeal agar for 5 days in cultivation vessels provided with an inlet and an outlet for air. Samples of volatile metabolites were collected on a porous polymer adsorbent attached to the outlet from day 2 through day 5 after inoculation. Adsorbed compounds were desorbed thermally and analyzed with GC/MS and a combined GC and sensory analysis, the GC sniff technique. Multivariate analysis of GC/MS and fungal odor data revealed strong associations between 6 of 65 volatile compounds and musty off-odor. The GC sniff technique showed that five of these, dimethyl disulfide, 1-octen-3-ol, 2-methylisoborneol, and two C11H18 compounds, had prominent off-odors. In addition, geosmin, 1-methoxy-3-methylbenzene, and methylphenol were produced in large amounts by some off-odorous fungi and contributed to their unpleasant odor. 3-Methylfuran, 2-methyl-1-propanol, and 3-methyl-1-butanol were much more commonly produced than the off-odorous compounds. Both odorous and other volatile metabolites could be detected after 2 days of fungal growth. The production of odorous metabolites was enhanced at the time of sporulation.

  • On the Capacity of the Copper Cable Channel Using the Common Mode
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference GLOBECOM '02.. - 0780376323 ; 2, s. 1269-1273
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The common-mode (CM) signal in wireline transmission systems has proven to provide valuable information exploited for mitigating narrowband noise at the receive side. We focus on the case of broadband noise. Treating the CM signal as an additional receive signal, we investigate the capacity of the copper cable channel for different levels of coordination among the users. We introduce a channel model which includes the common-mode paths and derive a suitable form of the channel capacity formula. CM crosstalk measurement results, essential for evaluation of the channel capacity, are presented. Using the measurement data, exemplary results of capacity gain achievable by CM-aided data transmission over the copper cable are shown.

  • A role for ColV plasmids in the evolution of pathogenic Escherichia coli ST58
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Escherichia coli ST58 has recently emerged as a globally disseminated uropathogen that often progresses to sepsis. Unlike most pandemic extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), which belong to pathogenic phylogroup B2, ST58 belongs to the environmental/commensal phylogroup B1. Here, we present a pan-genomic analysis of a global collection of 752 ST58 isolates from diverse sources. We identify a large ST58 sub-lineage characterized by near ubiquitous carriage of ColV plasmids, which carry genes encoding virulence factors, and by a distinct accessory genome including genes typical of the Yersiniabactin High Pathogenicity Island. This sub-lineage includes three-quarters of all ExPEC sequences in our study and has a broad host range, although poultry and porcine sources predominate. By contrast, strains isolated from cattle often lack ColV plasmids. Our data indicate that ColV plasmid acquisition contributed to the divergence of the major ST58 sub-lineage, and different sub-lineages inhabit poultry, swine and cattle.

  • Update of the original HDLS kindred: divergent clinical courses.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1600-0404 .- 0001-6314. ; 126:1, s. 67-75

    • Sundal C, Ekholm S, Nordborg C, Jönsson L, Börjesson-Hanson A, Lindén T, Zetterberg H, Viitanen M, Andersen O. Update of the original HDLS kindred: divergent clinical courses. Acta Neurol Scand: 2012: 126: 67-75. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background- Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS) was first identified among a Swedish kindred with 17 cases. The average age of onset was 36 years. Autopsy in four cases revealed the presence of axonal spheroids. The causative gene is unknown. Methods- We performed genealogical and longitudinal observations of the original kindred. Forty members were examined, five telephone-interviewed, and one of the original HDLS cases from 1984 was neuropathologically examined. The clinical course was documented. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings of two recently affected cases were examined, and one of those autopsied. Results- Of those examined, two developed HDLS during our survey and 38 were healthy. Those interviewed by telephone were healthy. One had symptoms suggestive of HDLS in 1984, but autopsy during our survey showed no spheroids. This patient, two relatives healthy at our examination and one without symptoms at telephone interview had HDLS diagnoses in the 1984 report. Thus, four HDLS diagnoses were unconfirmed. The number of identified patients amounts to 15 among 75 individuals in four generations, including two recent cases who demonstrated a subacute multisystem encephalopathy in Case 1 and an insidious course in Case 2. CSF showed signs of neurodegeneration without inflammation, and autopsy verified HDLS in Case 1. Conclusions- Some HDLS cases were misdiagnosed with unspecified psychiatric diagnoses in affected relatives from the original 1984 publication. However, HDLS is an encephalopathy dominated by a frontal lobe syndrome with an inexorably progressive and fatal course, where the different symptomatology in two recent cases confirmed the existence of acute and chronic variants.
