Psychosocial Predictors of Drop-Out from Organised Sport : A Prospective Study in Adolescent Soccer

- In recent years an increased drop-out rate in adolescents' soccer participation has been observed. Given the potentially adverse consequences of drop-out from soccer, more information about risk factors for drop-out is warranted. In the current study, Classification and Regression Tree (CRT) analysis was used to investigate demographic and motivational factors associated with an increased risk of drop-out from adolescent soccer. The results of this study indicate that older age, experiencing less autonomy support from the coach, less intrinsic motivation, being female, and lower socioeconomic status are factors associated with an increased risk of drop-out. An interpretation of the results of this study is that coaches play a central part in creating a sports context that facilitates motivation and continued soccer participation. Based on the findings of the current study we propose that soccer clubs implement theoretically informed coach education programs to help coaches adopt autonomy-supportive coaching strategies.

- Objectives: We examined the manner in which age, participation in other sports, socioeconomic status, perceived sport competence, achievement goal orientations, and perceived motivational climate may interact to predict the risk of dropout among adolescent female soccer players.Methods: Self-reported data from 519 female soccer players between 10 and 19 years of age (M = 13.41, SD = 1.77) were analysed using a person-centred approach to uncover the interactions among risk factors and their relative predictability of dropout.Results: Perceived motivational climate was identified as the main predictor, where relatively lower levels of mastery climate were associated with a higher dropout tendency (absolute risk reduction [ARR] = 12.2% ±6.1% [95% CL]). If combined with relatively lower levels of mastery climate, then relatively lower levels of perceived sport competence were related to higher dropout risks (ARR = 16.5% ±9.5%), whereas, in combination with relatively higher levels of mastery climate, then relatively lower levels of ego-orientated achievement goals were associated with higher dropout rates (ARR = 10.8% ±12.6%).Conclusions: Our findings afford novel insights into the interactions between, and the relative importance of, various risk factors for dropout in adolescent female soccer. This knowledge may be useful for soccer associations, clubs, and coaches when developing guidelines and strategies that aim to foster young females’ sustained participation in organised soccer.

- Second-home tourism’s transformative power on local communities is widely recognized through numerous studies on its social, environmental and economic effects in many parts of the world. A significant share of this literature examines how second-home tourism impacts local housing markets and access to housing. However, few studies have looked into how planning authorities navigate these impacts of second-home tourism and how they differ spatially. Based on previous studies on the heterogeneity of second-home tourism and a comprehensive interview material from 20 Swedish municipalities, this paper examines impacts on local housing markets and the management efforts by local planning authorities. The results show how second-home tourism impact housing markets very differently depending on context when it comes to growth, housing demand and effects for locals’ access to housing. The study argues for an acknowledgement of this heterogeneous geography and more context-aware second-home research that moves beyond the rural-urban dichotomy.

Fasta fastigheter och föränderliga ideal : en analys av industrinära bostäder i Husum och deras framtida användning

- Ordet fastighet utstrålar oföränderlighet – något stabilt som bokstavligt talat sitter fast i marken. I verkligheten är dock byggnader och samhället som omger dem stadda i ständig förändring. Detta innebär bland annat att byggnaders form, placering och funktion kan framstå som felanpassade när det omgivande samhället förändras. Denna rapport undersöker en sådan konkret situation kring tre hyresfastigheter belägna i Husum, en tätort i norra delen av Örnsköldsviks kommun. Sedan byggnaderna uppfördes i mitten av 1900-talet har en hel del hänt i närområdet och i de bestämmelser som styr samhällsplaneringen. Fastigheterna ligger inom de skyddszoner som upprättats kring Metsä Boards pappersmassa- och kartongbruk. Detta i kombination med möjliga framtida expansioner av industriverksamheten gör att Örnsköldsviks kommun och Övikshem funnit lämpligt att utreda byggnadernas framtida användning. Syftet med denna rapport är således att beskriva situationen ochsammanhanget för dessa fastigheter, samt peka ut alternativa riktningar framåt. Rapporten är inte tänkt som ett detaljerat beslutsunderlag, utan snarare som en undersökning av nuläget och olika framtida beslutsalternativ.

Footprints of an invisible population : second-home tourism and its heterogeneous impacts on municipal planning and housing markets in Sweden

- While public administrative systems are based on a principle of permanent residence, many people use multiple dwellings, such as second homes, in their everyday life. This mismatch makes second-home tourists an invisible population in the eyes of these systems, when, for example, distributing tax revenues or planning public services. The present thesis investigates the effects of this mismatch and its spatially diverse outcomes. It does so by studying how Swedish municipalities perceive and manage the impacts of second-home tourism, and how this tourism affects the housing market. The thesis is based on microdata of the Swedish second-home stock, longitudinal housing market statistics for 1999-2017, and interviews with civil servants from 20 Swedish municipalities.The empirical findings show that the impacts of second-home tourism vary spatially, but also over time. While all municipalities interviewed in the thesis experienced second-home tourism, there were noticeable spatial variations in the effects on, for example, planning, public services and housing provision. The patterns to this variation were particularly pronounced between periurban areas, sparsely populated areas and tourism hotspots. Periurban municipalities were most affected with second homes being converted into primary residences and the associated costs of that change. In sparsely populated areas, municipalities faced the opposite situation combined with an ever-shrinking population of permanent residents. Tourism hotspots had to manage the combined challenges of a seasonally varying second-home population exceeding the registered permanent population. The examined housing market statistics show a similar pattern, with considerable spatial differences in the market relations between primary residences and second homes. It also reveals growing regional disparities, with second homes driving or trailing overall price development depending on geographical context.To summarise, the thesis demonstrates how impacts of second-home tourism on municipal planning and housing markets differ and provides an analysis for the patterns of this variation. Based on this, it provides a number of proposals for policy change. The thesis also contributes to theory development on the spatially heterogeneous effects of mobile lifestyles, by conceptualising second-home tourism as an umbrella concept. As such, second-home tourism encompasses many different forms of dwellings, practices and impacts grounded in geographical and historical contexts. This emphasises the need for research, planning, governance and policy-making to recognise human mobility and the diverse spatiality of its effects.

Mapping an invisible population : the uneven geography of second-home tourism

- Second-home tourism is a very popular form of tourism in many countries, particularly in the Nordic countries. More than half of the Swedish population have access to second homes. Previous studies have revealed that there is great variation between different second homes. Examples range from rustic Australian shacks, lonely cabins in the Norwegian mountains, spacious Swedish archipelago villas and palatial Russian dachas. Still, second homes are often seen and analysed as a unitary category – a perspective that obscures the considerable heterogeneity within the category as well as spatial differences in the impact of second-home tourism. Using a second-home typology from previous research and data on about 660,000 second homes, we analyse the heterogeneity of second homes by mapping the composition of the Swedish second-home stock. Results show the uneven geography of second-home tourism, revealing significant and sometimes steep differences between peripheral areas and urban hinterlands, tourism hot-spots, and areas in decline. Based on these results, we assert that there is good cause to move away from using second homes as a unitary category. Instead, we argue for viewing second homes as an umbrella concept with dwelling use in focus. This enables a greater sensibility to place and more accurate analyses of the uneven impacts of second-home tourism. The results also give greater insights into the impact of the ‘invisible population’ of second-home owners from a public planning perspective.

- Second-home tourism is a popular form of tourism in many countries. Sweden has over 600,000 second homes and more than half of the population have access to such properties. Previous literature on second-home tourism indicates that it impacts local communities and municipalities in many different ways, ranging from public services and land-use planning to the housing market and the local economy. However, it has not been sufficiently investigated how, where and by which spatial patterns these impacts might come into effect. Previous research has mostly been in the form of case studies, making generalizations difficult. This paper examines whether a theorized heterogeneity of second-home landscapes transfers into actual spatial variance in the impacts of second-home tourism. The investigation is done through semi-structured interviews with officials from 20 Swedish municipalities, selected using a theoretical model and comprehensive quantitative data. Results reveal considerable variance between different locations and argues for more context-aware second-home research.

- The effects of second-home tourism on property markets has been one of the key debates in second-home research. This has been discussed in association with property speculation, financial vulnerability, gentrification, displacement, and rural development. This paper studies the market prices for all detached homes traded on the open market in Sweden during 1999–2017. It investigates how the market values of second homes have developed over time and how they vary spatially. Results show clear and growing spatial inequalities over the period. It emphasises the dynamic interplay between different forms of dwelling use and the close relationship to spatial context.
