  • Behind copper prices: a historical perspective 1850 - 1950
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Commodity prices and their secular trends are at the core of many different development theories, particularly relevant for the Latin American region, like the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis, the natural resource curse theory or the somehow malthusian scarcity prediction. In this article we review the international copper price indices available in the literature and we compare them with a new data set, elaborated from the Official Foreign Trade statistics of one of the main copper producers (Chile) This data has included information on value added and several price/volume indicators allowing to elaborate a more accurate copper price estimation in the long run. This information will enhance our knowledge on commodity prices, mineral trends and structural change.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a first approach to the comparison between the Andean and the Nordic countries, it is their specialisation on natural resource exportation. But even though both regions exported similar commodities at the beginning of the nineteenth century, how similar were they really? In this article, we analyse thecopper exportation of Chile and Norway in order to see small differences that can have made a difference in the long-run evolution of these two countries. We review the international copper price indices available in the literature and we compare them with a new data set, from the Official Foreign Trade statistics ofthese two relevant copper producers, Chile and Norway. This data includes information on value-added and price/volume indicators incorporating differences in varieties, qualities and transport costs. Our main contribution is that if the previous series are based on the assumption that copper is a homogeneous and standard product, and therefore it has one single international price, in the real world many different qualities as well as levels of processing were included into the production of each particular country, changing it also over time. Those varieties of copper would have mattered crucially for its implications on growth. The deepest knowledge on commodity price formation would improve forecasting for development policies on the mining sector.

  • Industrial Development in Chile. 1870 - 2015
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: An Economic History of Chile : Volume 2: Themes and Problems - Volume 2: Themes and Problems.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chile has been one of the richest Latin American countries since nineteenth century. Gifted with enormous amount of Natural Resources (NNRR), its growth is linked to the exploitation of these resources and exports related to the primary economic sector, however, besides to this lack of diversification, industrial sector has played a relevant role in this country and its development is crucial to understand the Chilean convergence and divergence stages trough history. In this chapter, we analyse the interdependence among NNRR exploitation and Industrial growth and how this link has shaped Chilean economic development since 1870.

  • Natural Resources Curse in the long run? : Bolivia, Chile and Peru in the Nordic countries’ mirror
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The new estimates of the Maddison Project show that the p.p.p. GDP per capita ratio between Bolivia and Finland has changed from 0.68 ca. 1850 to 0.16 in 2015; similarly, that between Chile and Norway from 0.65 to 0.28. The aim of this article is to present a review of the literature and available quantitative evidence to understand how these extreme differences became possible between countries with similarly enormous natural resources endowments. Specifically, the article seeks to a) identify some stylised facts that may help understand the divergence between Andean and Nordic countries; b) highlight research questions that will guide further work about the divergent effect of natural resource abundance in Andean and Nordic economies. In order to achieve these objectives, four topics are covered: GDPpc, population, trade and taxation. The analysis comprises three Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, and Sweden) and three Andean countries (Bolivia, Chile, and Peru) from the mid-nineteenth century to present day. The sample size, time span covered and thematic approach provide new evidence regarding previous work.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 10:4, s. 965-965
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new estimates of the Maddison Project show that GDP per capita ratio at purchasing power parity (ppp) between Bolivia and Finland has changed from 0.68 ca. 1850 to 0.16 in 2015; similarly, that between Chile and Norway from 0.65 to 0.28. The aim of this article is to present a review of the literature and available quantitative evidence to understand how these extreme differences became possible between countries with similarly enormous natural resource endowments. Specifically, the article seeks to: (a) identify some stylized facts that may help understand the divergence between Andean and Nordic countries; (b) identify key historical processes that explain the divergent effect of natural resource abundance in Andean and Nordic economies. In order to achieve these objectives, four topics are covered: GDPpc, population, trade and taxation. The analysis comprises three Nordic countries (Finland, Norway and Sweden) and three Andean countries (Bolivia, Chile and Peru) from the mid-Nineteenth Century to present day.
