  • The Indo-European Voice of Barbarians
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies. - : Faculties of Humanities and Theology at Lund University - Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies. - 2003-0924. ; 1:1, s. 169-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our essay we shall focus on the analyses (cum grano salis) of a limited number of words from the introductory pages of the novel Barbarians (such as gorgan, grui, crap, fală, sfadă, etc.). Here, more than elsewhere the author makes use of a good amount of rather strange words in his stylistic attempt to conceive the realm of the Dacians. We shall make an analysis of the etymology of these rather uncommon words as designated in Vinereanu's Etymological Dictionary of Romanian Language (2008) (unlike the traditional Romanian dictionaries, a different vision). From the (probable) linguistic discrepancies and stylistic preferences, findings will be drawn and novelties will be suggested, concerned with Romanian language and culture.

  • Amândoi by Liviu Rebreanu : multicultural settings and sources of suspense
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies. - : Faculties of Humanities and Theology at Lund University - Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies. - 2003-0924. ; 4:1, s. 87-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article looks into the multicultural settings of Liviu Rebreanu’s novel “Amândoi” (Both) by briefly examining the representation of its main, minor or incidental characters, either intelligentsia or common people. Ethnicity, social and professional statuses are considered as elements of multiculturalism. The continuous increase of suspense, the open ending, the parody in the undertone, and the development of the intrigue in an original multicultural context are presented further on. The various rumours arising from the townspeople’s own hypotheses about the murders of the aged Dăniloiu provide the opportunity to present the detective genre, which Rebreanu introduced in Romanian literature, suggesting a disguised satire of the type. The archaisms and the regional words of the novel are laboriously registered and underlined in terms of usage, etymology and linguistic connectivity, with the purpose of showing the multicultural flavour by means of a multilingual approach. The essay indicates that all characters use archaisms and local words, notwithstanding their social status or aspirations, a detail that puts in perspective the cultural configuration of the provincial town life, which Rebreanu is very aware of.

  • Yukio Mishima, "Tumultul valurilor"
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Incursiuni în imaginar. - 2501-2169. ; 12, s. 221-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The essay aims at decoding the 1954 novel The Sound of Waves in relation to Mishima’s biography, political and aesthetic theory, arguing that his most serene artistic achievement is, in the end, a desperate self-deluding for various inner contradictions. In a minute hermeneutic approach the article identifies and interprets such defining issues as: suicide, loneliness, individualism, egoism, materialism, decisive action, physical strength, traditionalism, religiosity, providence, knowledge, experience, love, capitulation, etc. The essay proves that, beyond an apparent thin shell of delightful fairy-tale like realm and story, The Sound of Waves is but a show of failed art therapy for the nightmarish inner universe of an idealist.
