  • Fermi Large Area Telescope Measurements of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission at Intermediate Galactic Latitudes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. Particles and fields. - 0556-2821 .- 1089-4918. ; 103:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diffuse galactic γ-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory indicated excess γ-ray emission ≳1GeV relative to diffuse galactic γ-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-called “EGRET GeV excess”). The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has measured the diffuse γ-ray emission with improved sensitivity and resolution compared to EGRET. We report on LAT measurements for energies 100 MeV to 10 GeV and galactic latitudes 10°≤|b|≤20°. The LAT spectrum for this region of the sky is well reproduced by a diffuse galactic γ-ray emission model that is consistent with local CR spectra and inconsistent with the EGRET GeV excess.

  • Fermi Observations of TeV-Selected Active Galactic Nuclei
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 707:2, s. 1310-1333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on observations of TeV-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) made during the first 5.5 months of observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). In total, 96 AGNs were selected for study, each being either (1) a source detected at TeV energies (28 sources) or (2) an object that has been studied with TeV instruments and for which an upper limit has been reported (68 objects). The Fermi observations show clear detections of 38 of these TeV-selected objects, of which 21 are joint GeV-TeV sources, and 29 were not in the third EGRET catalog. For each of the 38 Fermi-detected sources, spectra and light curves are presented. Most can be described with a power law of spectral index harder than 2.0, with a spectral break generally required to accommodate the TeV measurements. Based on an extrapolation of the Fermi spectrum, we identify sources, not previously detected at TeV energies, which are promising targets for TeV instruments. Evidence for systematic evolution of the γ-ray spectrum with redshift is presented and discussed in the context of interaction with the extragalactic background light.

  • Measurement of the Cosmic Ray e(+)+e(-) Spectrum from 20 GeV to 1 TeV with the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:Article number: 181101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Designed as a high-sensitivity gamma-ray observatory, the Fermi Large Area Telescope is also an electron detector with a large acceptance exceeding 2 m(2) sr at 300 GeV. Building on the gamma-ray analysis, we have developed an efficient electron detection strategy which provides sufficient background rejection for measurement of the steeply falling electron spectrum up to 1 TeV. Our high precision data show that the electron spectrum falls with energy as E-3.0 and does not exhibit prominent spectral features. Interpretations in terms of a conventional diffusive model as well as a potential local extra component are briefly discussed.

  • Fermi LAT observations of cosmic-ray electrons from 7 GeV to 1 TeV
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW D. - 1550-7998. ; 82:9, s. 092004-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of our analysis of cosmic-ray electrons using about 8 x 10(6) electron candidates detected in the first 12 months on-orbit by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This work extends our previously published cosmic-ray electron spectrum down to 7 GeV, giving a spectral range of approximately 2.5 decades up to 1 TeV. We describe in detail the analysis and its validation using beam-test and on-orbit data. In addition, we describe the spectrum measured via a subset of events selected for the best energy resolution as a cross-check on the measurement using the full event sample. Our electron spectrum can be described with a power law proportional to E-3.08+/-0.05 with no prominent spectral features within systematic uncertainties. Within the limits of our uncertainties, we can accommodate a slight spectral hardening at around 100 GeV and a slight softening above 500 GeV.

  • Searches for cosmic-ray electron anisotropies with the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: PHYS REV D. - 1550-7998. ; 82:9, s. 092003-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite (Fermi LAT) detected more than 1.6 x 10(6) cosmic-ray electrons/positrons with energies above 60 GeV during its first year of operation. The arrival directions of these events were searched for anisotropies of angular scale extending from similar to 10 degrees up to 90 degrees, and of minimum energy extending from 60 GeV up to 480 GeV. Two independent techniques were used to search for anisotropies, both resulting in null results. Upper limits on the degree of the anisotropy were set that depended on the analyzed energy range and on the anisotropy's angular scale. The upper limits for a dipole anisotropy ranged from similar to 0.5% to similar to 10%.

  • Understanding the magnetic interaction between intrinsic defects and impurity ions in room-temperature ferromagnetic Mg1-xFexO thin films
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 28:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the nature and characteristics of the intrinsic defects and impurities in the dielectric barrier separating the ferromagnetic electrodes in a magnetic tunneling junction is of great importance for understanding the often observed 'barrier-breakdown' therein. In this connection, we present herein systematic experimental (SQUID and synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray absorption spectroscopy) and computational studies on the electronic and magnetic properties of Mg1-xFexO thin films. Our studies reveal: (i) defect aggregates comprised of basic and trimer units (Fe impurity coupled to 1 or 2 Mg vacancies) and (ii) existence of two competing magnetic orders, defect- and dopant-induced, with spin densities aligning anti-parallel if the trimer is present in the oxide matrix. These findings open up new avenues for designing tunneling barriers with high endurance and tunneling effect upon tuning the concentration/distribution of the two magnetic orders.

  • Modelling of radiation damage and positron annihilation in metallic materials
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The radiation damage is one of the key concerns in the research of materials used in radiation environments. In this thesis, we theoretically investigate the radiation damage phenomenon by focusing on two important topics: the defect production and evolution, and the defect characterization. The first part aims at two aspects. Firstly, a full energy range primary radiation damage model is presented based on modifying the athermal recombination corrected displacements per atom (arc-dpa) model. This modified full energy range model is validated by classical and ab initio molecular dynamics. Then, the modified model is used to estimate the radiation damage in electron-irradiated iron alloys and perform a systematic cluster dynamics study. The Cu precipitation in experiment is reproduced by the cluster dynamics model. This model is then used to predict the Cu precipitation in spent-fuel canisters up to 105 years. The second part focuses on positron annihilation in metallic materials. Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) is a useful technique to characterize the ultrafine defects in materials. In this part, the state-of-the-art two-component density functional theory (TCDFT) is used to calculate the positron annihilation characteristics (positron lifetimes and Doppler broadening spectra) in materials. Firstly, a case study is performed in Fe-Cu system. Both vacancyfree Cu clusters and vacancy-Cu complexes are investigated. Then, a more systematic investigation is conducted to calculate the positron annihilation in transition metals. Finally, the positron annihilation in vacancy defects in tungsten is investigated by combining both experimental and theoretical results. The limitation of commonly used Boroński-Nieminen local density approximation is discussed.
