    • In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pious was Studied using 1.2 x 10(5) fully reconstructed events. and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst). The result is consistent with previous measurements and further corroborates the importance of pion-pion final state interactions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Polarization of a stored beam by spin-filtering

    • The PAX Collaboration has successfully performed a spin-filtering experiment with protons at the COSY-ring. The measurement allowed the determination of the spin-dependent polarizing cross section, that compares well with the theoretical prediction from the nucleon-nucleon potential. The test confirms that spin-filtering can be adopted as a method to polarize a stored beam and that the present interpretation of the mechanism in terms of the proton-proton interaction is correct. The outcome of the experiment is of utmost importance in view of the possible application of the method to polarize a beam of stored antiprotons.

    • In a previous publication, measurements of the depolarization of a stored proton beam by interaction with a co-propagating unpolarized electron beam at low relative energy have been presented and an upper limit of about 3 x 10(7) b for the electron-proton spin flip cross-section was determined. A refined analysis presented in this paper reduces the previous upper limit by a factor of three by the introduction of a new procedure that, also makes use of non-identified particles.

    • We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin-flip cross section in low-energy electron–proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam.

  • Wurtzite silicon as a potential absorber in photovoltaics : Tailoring the optical absorption by applying strain

    • We present ab initio calculations of the electronic structure and the optical properties of wurtzite Si (Si-IV). We find an indirect band gap of 0.95 eV (Gamma(5) -> M-1) and an optically forbidden direct gap of 1.63 eV (Gamma(5) -> Gamma(10)), which is due to a backfolding of the L-1 state of Si in the diamond structure (Si-I). Optical absorption spectra including excitonic and local-field effects are calculated. Further, the effects of hydrostatic pressure, uniaxial strain, and biaxial strain on the absorption properties are investigated. Biaxial tensile strains enhance the optical absorption of Si-IV in the spectral range which is relevant for photovoltaic applications. High biaxial tensile strains (>4%) even transform Si-IV into a direct semiconductor.

  • Model GW band structure of InAs and GaAs in the wurtzite phase

    • We report quasiparticle calculations of the newly observed wurtzite polymorph of InAs and GaAs. The calculations are performed in the GW approximation (based on a model dielectric function) using plane waves and pseudopotentials. For comparison we also report the study of the zinc-blende phase within the same approximations. In the InAs compound the In 4d electrons play a very important role: whether they are frozen in the core or not leads either to a correct or a wrong band ordering (negative gap) within the local-density appproximation (LDA). We have calculated the GW band structure in both cases. In the first approach, we have estimated the correction to the pd repulsion calculated within the LDA and included this effect in the calculation of the GW corrections to the LDA spectrum. In the second case, we circumvent the negative gap problem by first using the screened exchange approximation and then calculating the GW corrections starting from the so obtained eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. This approach, that can be thought of as a step towards self-consistency, leads to a more realistic band structure and was also used for GaAs. For both InAs and GaAs in the wurtzite phase we predict an increase of the quasiparticle gap with respect to the zinc-blende polytype.
