  • GGOS Requirements for Core Sites
  • 2015
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Global Geodetic Observing System, an entity under the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) has undertaken the task of advocating for the geodetic infrastructure necessary to meet the global change and other societal challenges, and defining the requirements for the geodetic observatories that constitute it. In this role, GGOS will work with the IAG Measurement Services, the scientific Community, and national and international agencies to bring a combined effort to bear on these areas of international concern. A major task within this effort is the upgrading, expansion, and maintenance of the global ground network of co-located Core Sites for geodesy to enable the realization and maintenance of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), Earth orientation parameters and precision orbits to meet the needs of Earth orbiting missions, Earth Surface and interior programs, and deep space navigation. GGOS and the geodetic Core Sites should be compliant with the UN resolution from Feb 26, 2015. See http://www.unggrf.org/. This Site Requirements Document outlines what is needed for that compliance.

  • Recent Progress in the VLBI2010 Development
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: in Proceedings of the 2007 IAG General Assembly, Perugia, Italy, July 2-13, 2007, ed. M. Sideris, Springer. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0939-9585. - 9783540854258 ; 133:Part 5, s. 833-840
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From October 2003 to September 2005, the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) examined current and future requirements for geodetic VLBI, including all components from antennas to analysis. IVS Working Group 3 "VLBI 2010", which was tasked with this effort, concluded with recommendations for a new generation of VLBI systems. These recommendations were based on the goals of achieving 1mm measurement accuracy on global baselines, performing continuous measurements for time series of station positions and Earth orientation parameters, and reaching a turnaround time from measurement to initial geodetic results of less than 24 h. To realize these recommendations and goals, along with the need for low cost of construction and operation, requires a complete examination of all aspects of geodetic VLBI including equipment, processes, and observational strategies. Hence, in October 2005, the IVS VLBI2010 Committee (V2C) commenced work on defining the VLBI2010 system specifications. In this paper we give a summary of the recent progress of the VLBI2010 project. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

  • On More than Two Decades of Celestial Reference Frame VLBI Observations in the Deep South: IVS-CRDS (1995 - 2021)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Publications Astronomical Society of Australia. - 1448-6083 .- 1323-3580. ; 40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The International VLBI Service for Geodesy & Astrometry (IVS) regularly provides high-quality data to produce Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP), and for the maintenance and realization of the International Terrestrial and Celestial Reference Frames, ITRF and ICRF. The first iteration of the celestial reference frame (CRF) at radio wavelengths, the ICRF1, was adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1997 to replace the FK5 optical frame. Soon after, the IVS began official operations and in 2009 there was a significant increase in data sufficient to warrant a second iteration of the CRF, ICRF2. The most recent ICRF3, was adopted by the IAU in 2018. However, due to the geographic distribution of observing stations being concentrated in the Northern hemisphere, CRFs are generally weaker in the South due to there being fewer Southern Hemisphere observations. To increase the Southern Hemisphere observations, and the density, precision of the sources, a series of deep South observing sessions was initiated in 1995. This initiative in 2004 became the IVS Celestial Reference Frame Deep South (IVS-CRDS) observing program. This paper covers the evolution of the CRDS observing program for the period 1995 to 2021, details the data products and results, and concludes with a summary of upcoming improvements to this ongoing project.
