  • Mötesplatser för unga läggs ner. Är det hållbart?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Samhällsbyggaren. - 2002-956X. ; 2, s. 26-28

  • Shaping the policies towards early school leaving in Portugal, Sweden and Poland
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Comparative Perspectives on Early School Leaving in the European Union. - London : Routledge. - 9781351691819 - 9781138048072 ; , s. 47-60
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on education policies in Portugal, Poland and Sweden, exploring links between the political construction of ESL and the fight against it. Portugal still has one of the highest rates in Europe, even with great progress; Sweden is and has been in quite a comfortable position very close to the European average; and the rate of ESL in Poland is significantly below. We take into consideration the relationships of education with Europeanization, including the assertion of new roles for the state that interacts in a multiple scale governance - the dispersion of decision-making from the states to European institutions in line with Roger Dale (2007). We argue that these processes bring to the fore difficulties and opportunities that are explored in national interpretations of the educational policy and phenomena. Taking into account the specific educational structures, policies and practices in the three countries, the chapter highlights that the educational debate varies in areas of concentration and there are tensions in the discussion of vocational tracks; that the socio-political and economic crisis has reshaped the ways different countries address ESL and try to make the best of EU funding; that tensions remain in varying degrees between the social and educational goals and the needs of the labour market; and that social concerns about equality of opportunities and educational development are not as common as they should be in light of the EU concern about social inclusion.

  • Beyond social ties : The impact of social capital on labour market outcomes for young Swedish people
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1440-7833 .- 1741-2978. ; 52:4, s. 711-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study makes use of a dataset which contains material relating to young Swedish people who have recently completed their studies and started working. It explores whether using social networks as such or using individuals' resources which are accessible through social networks (social capital) provides relative advantages in the competition for better jobs. Interest in this topic stems from the recent development of sociological theories in this field. The results indicate that the use of social ties is a common way to find a job in the highly regulated Swedish labour market, but that informal recruitment methods per se provide no relative advantages in the competition for better jobs. On the other hand, given the same demographic characteristics, socioeconomic background and educational attainments, there is a positive association between resources embedded in an individual's social network (social capital) and the quality of the jobs obtained.

  • Compensatory school effects and social capital
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-0760. ; 9:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to explore whether and how school-based social capital (SSC) may increase or reduce inequalities in the academic achievement and well-being of students from different backgrounds (class, gender, and ethnicity). SSC here refers to those qualities of social relationships and the degree of interconnectedness between students, teachers, and parents that can support the educational attainment and social adjustment of young people. As the results of our ethnographic studies indicate, there is a significant association between SSC and school composition—i.e., the class and ethnic background of students in a school. The association indicates the stratification effect of social capital in schools as a predominant pattern. In a school with students from higher socio-economic backgrounds, we observed more qualified and motivated teachers, an intensive parental involvement, and, consequently, more constructive and friendly relationships among students. In contrast, in a school located in a disadvantaged area, the social relations were quite the reverse. We then found a third category. In a school with children from lower social class backgrounds placed in an immigrant-dense area, highly committed school staff were able to create an emotional closeness and trust between them, the pupils, and their parents. School-based social capital in this context introduced a sense of solidarity and created a pro-educational climate.

  • Constructions of self-identification : children of immigrants in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Identities. - : Routledge. - 1070-289X .- 1547-3384. ; 28:3, s. 341-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is about self-identification by a sample of young people with various migrant backgrounds in Sweden. In a survey we asked them how they present themselves to others in different contexts (in their schools and neighbourhoods or when they are out of Sweden). Our findings suggest that young people’s identification is not fixed. The paths to these various forms of identification are shaped by a variety of individual (class background, parents’ country of origin) and social factors (friendship networks and school composition). The results indicate that those who identified themselves as Swedish or hyphenated tended to be quite similar as regards their other characteristics, while those who presented themselves with the parents’ birth country or religious affiliation have very little in common.
