    • It sounds extreme to talk about getting higher quality at lower costs - and yet that is exactly what happens in eXtreme Programming. If it can be done for producing software products, we think it might be possible to carry over (all or most of) their techniques to teaching and get better teaching products (learning) at lower costs - simply by initiating eXtreme Teaching.

    • Many universities have experienced an increase in the intake of students and at the same time cuts in the budgets for teaching. Many teachers have experienced, for a number of reasons, they have to adjust their teaching or a course with short notice. These facts pose a challenge to the teachers agility in adapting to changes - and in doing it in a cost efficient way. We propose eXtreme Teaching as a framework that allows teachers to focus on experimenting with and improving their teaching techniques without compromising quality. The framework and the associated practices provide quick, accurate feedback the teacher can act on. eXtreme Teaching will allow better student learning, better relationships with the students, increased interaction and development of the staff involved, less risk - and probably happier staff members. In this paper, we will describe the eXtreme Teaching framework and discuss and motivate its background.

    • In previous papers, we have presented eXtreme Teaching (XT) as a framework for continuous improvement of teaching and learning. In those papers we have also sketched a number of XT practices within the framework, but have not been able to give them any real in-depth treatment. In this paper, we focus on one single XT practice - Pair Teaching - and cover it in more detail. First, we give a short overview of the XT framework. Next, we present the background and motivation for introducing the practice of Pair Teaching and relate the practice to pedagogical theories. Then, we discuss and compare experience from practicing Pair Teaching - both our own and those of others. We relate this experience to the specific context in which Pair Teaching techniques have been used. Finally, we draw our conclusions.

    • Software Configuration, Management has been a big success in research and creation of tools. There are also many vendors in the market of selling courses to companies. However, in the education sector Software Configuration Management has still not quite made it - at least not into the university curriculum. It is either not taught at all or is just a minor part of a general course in software engineering. In this paper, we report on our experience with giving. a full course entirely dedicated to Software Configuration Management topics and start a discussion of what ideally should be the goal and contents of such a course.

  • Configuration management for eXtreme programming

    • Extreme Programming (XP) is becoming popular as a software development method and there is quite a lot of literature describing its philosophy and practices. However, in all of this literature Software Configuration Management (SCM) is almost never mentioned explicitly, leaving XP practitioners with the impression that SCM is not needed and SCM people with the impression that XP is not sound from an SCM perspective. We carried out a more profound analysis of XP and its practices seen from an SCM perspective. We found that in general XP and its practices do not go against common SCM standards, if we take into consideration that the XP context is different from that of more traditional projects. However, some SCM aspects need to be made explicit and a number of SCM-specific sub-practices need to be added to make XP a complete and sound development method seen from an SCM perspective. We report on how we implemented “our findings” on several dozen XP projects and our experience from doing this through several iterations.

    • Any organisation that produces high quality software merits a closer analysis of their methods such that good techniques can be transferred to other organisations. Open Source Software projects is such a case. We make explicit their underlying process for handling change management and analyse to what extent their success can be attributed to good process, tools or people. Furthermore, we discuss to what degree lessons learned from OSS can be transferred to more traditional ways of developing software.
