  • A Case Study on the Influence of Multiple Users on the Effective Channel in a Massive MIMO System
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Wireless Communications Letters. - 2162-2337. ; , s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the importance of weak clusters when modeling a wireless massive MIMO channel. We do this by studying the influence of densely spaced terminals and the number of base-station antennas for a zero-forcing precoded massive MIMO system. In particular, we focus on the influence on the correlation and imbalance between the signals at the terminal antennas, the effective channel-gain, the eigenvalue distributions and the number of clusters. The study is based on measured radio-channels from terminal prototypes with integrated antennas connected to a massive MIMO testbed. We further evaluate the advantage of using block-diagonalized zero-forcing compared to conventional zero-forcing in a massive MIMO system. Unexpectedly, terminals with low antenna envelope correlation coefficient may benefit significantly from block-diagonal zero-forcing in a massive MIMO system. The main conclusion is that weaker clusters are important when modeling multi-user scenarios.

  • A Simulation Framework for Multiple-Antenna Terminals in 5G Massive MIMO Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536. ; 5, s. 26819-26831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent interest in massive MIMO has spurred intensive work on massive MIMO channel modeling in contemporary literature. However, current models fail to take the characteristics of terminal antennas into account. There is no massive MIMO channel model available that can be used for evaluation of the influence of different antenna characteristics at the terminal side. In this paper, we provide a simulation framework that fills this gap. We evaluate the framework with antennas integrated into Sony Xperia handsets operating at 3.7 GHz as this spectrum is identified for the 5G new radio standard by 3GPP. The simulation results are compared with measured terminal performance when communicating with the Lund University’s massive MIMO testbed under the same loading conditions. Expressions are derived for comparison of the gain obtained from different diversity schemes computed from measured far-field antenna patterns. We conclude that the simulation framework yields results close to the measured ones and that the framework can be used for antenna evaluation for terminals in a practical precoded massive MIMO system.

  • Analysis of Transmission Schemes for Dual-Antenna Terminals in Massive MIMO Systems
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 25th International Conference on Telecommunications, ICT 2018. - 9781538623213 ; , s. 76-82
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall system performance of massive MIMO is improved by equipping user terminals with multiple antennas. In this paper, we investigate transceiver designs for the case of a single downlink stream and in particular, we study the uplink pilot design. Moreover, we study the consequences of channel estimation errors at the base-station, and to what extent a dual-antenna terminal can get access to relevant channel statistics for optimization of the pilot signal. Gain expressions for comparison of different designs are derived. We verify the analytic results based on antennas integrated into Sony-Xperia handsets measured with the Lund University massive MIMO testbed. The measurements are performed at frequencies <6GHz since this part of the spectrum is a candidate for NR standard according to 3GPP.

  • Simulation of Multiple-Antenna Terminal Performance in Massive MIMO Systems based on Indoor Measurements
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - 0018-9545. ; 69:1, s. 418-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In massive MIMO systems the uplink pilot signalstransmitted by a terminal define the channel seen by the basestation. This gives the terminal some degree of freedom selectingan uplink pilot transmission strategy. In this paper, we investigatethe benefit of different pilot transmission strategies when increasingthe number of antennas in the terminal. Building on previouswork on a simulation framework for Multiple-antenna terminalsin 5G massive MIMO systems, this paper presents simulatedperformance results for various transmission schemes. The resultsare calibrated to reflect a real communication situation in a largeauditorium. Emulating the measurement set-up, we show that theframework can be tuned to generate channel distributions thatmatch measured data. Under generalized conditions, we performsimulations for different terminal transmission-strategies, bothrelated to single stream and multiple streams. All evaluations arebased on terminals with four antennas integrated into real SonyXperia smartphone-chassis, tuned to 3.7 GHz. The measurementsare conducted by using the Lund University Massive MIMOtestbed with its 100 antennas. The results clearly show theadvantage of increasing the antenna-count also at the terminalside in massive MIMO systems.

  • Transmission schemes for Multiple Antenna Terminals in Real Massive MIMO systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). - 9781509013289 - 9781509013296
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In massive MIMO performance evaluations it is often assumed that the terminal has a single antenna. The combination of multiple antennas in a terminal and massive MIMO precoding at the base station side can further improve overall system performance. We present measurement results for multi antenna terminals operating in different transmission schemes and how they perform under varying loading conditions. Gain expressions are derived that enable easy comparison between the transmission schemes. The evaluation is performed on realistic antennas integrated into Sony Xperia handsets tuned to 3.7~GHz and operated together with the Lund University massive MIMO (LuMaMi) test bed. It is concluded that the approach used in today's mobile systems, where up link and down link are addressed independently, will not provide the best performance. The performance can be improved by the selection of transmission schemes optimized for massive MIMO.

  • In Vivo Analysis of Inhibitory Synaptic Inputs and Rebounds in Deep Cerebellar Nuclear Neurons
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neuronal function depends on the properties of the synaptic inputs the neuron receive and on its intrinsic responsive properties. However, the conditions for synaptic integration and activation of intrinsic responses may to a large extent depend on the level of background synaptic input. In this respect, the deep cerebellar nuclear (DCN) neurons are of particular interest: they feature a massive background synaptic input and an intrinsic, postinhibitory rebound depolarization with profound effects on the synaptic integration. Using in vivo whole cell patch clamp recordings from DCN cells in the cat, we find that the background of Purkinje cell input provides a tonic inhibitory synaptic noise in the DCN cell. Under these conditions, individual Purkinje cells appear to have a near negligible influence on the DCN cell and clear-cut rebounds are difficult to induce. Peripheral input that drives the simple spike output of the afferent PCs to the DCN cell generates a relatively strong DCN cell inhibition, but do not induce rebounds. In contrast, synchronized climbing fiber activation, which leads to a synchronized input from a large number of Purkinje cells, can induce profound rebound responses. In light of what is known about climbing fiber activation under behaviour, the present findings suggest that DCN cell rebound responses may be an unusual event. Our results also suggest that cortical modulation of DCN cell output require a substantial co-modulation of a large proportion of the PCs that innervate the cell, which is a possible rationale for the existence of the cerebellar microcomplex.

  • Strategies to improve usability and preserve accuracy in biological sequence databases
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proteomics. - : Wiley. - 1615-9853 .- 1615-9861. ; 16:18, s. 2454-2460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biology is increasingly dependent on large-scale analysis, such as proteomics, creating a requirement for efficient bioinformatics. Bioinformatic predictions of biological functions rely upon correctly annotated database sequences, and the presence of inaccurately annotated or otherwise poorly described sequences introduces noise and bias to biological analyses. Accurate annotations are, for example, pivotal for correct identifications of polypeptide fragments. However, standards for how sequence databases are organized and presented are currently insufficient. Here, we propose five strategies to address fundamental issues in the annotation of sequence databases: (i) to clearly separate experimentally verified and unverified sequence entries; (ii) to enable a system for tracing the origins of annotations; (iii) to separate entries with high-quality, informative annotation from less useful ones; (iv) to integrate automated quality-control software whenever such tools exist; and (v) to facilitate post-submission editing of annotations and metadata associated with sequences. We believe that implementation of these strategies, for example as requirements for publication of database papers, would enable biology to better take advantage of large-scale data.

  • Effects of Ground Cover Management on Biotic Communities, Ecosystem Services and Disservices in Organic Deciduous Fruit Orchards in South Africa
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2571-581X. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic orchards may have higher biodiversity and levels of ecosystem services compared to conventionally managed orchards. However, it is not well-understood how management decisions within organic orchards alter biotic communities and ecosystem services. The simultaneous provision of individual ecosystem services and mitigation of disservices is crucial for organic growers who cannot replace natural regulatory processes by artificial inputs. This study addresses one of the major constraints for organic fruit production in South Africa, namely the availability of strategies for pest control and nutrient management in soils. Partly due to these constraints, organic certification of deciduous fruits is very uncommon in South Africa and limited our selection of study plots. A field experiment on a single farm was established to study the impact of a treatment with dead organic mulch compared to controls on the composition of biotic communities, the simultaneous provision of ecosystem services, and the mitigation of disservices in five organic deciduous fruit orchards in the Western Cape province. Mulching did not significantly reduce weed cover or alter the taxonomic composition of weed communities, but affected soil organisms. Mulched subplots had significantly higher densities of Collembola and phytophagous nematodes and lower microbial activity and woodlice numbers. Independent of mulch treatment, both orchard type (conventional: apricot and organic: apricot, peach, plum, and quince) and weed cover had pronounced effects on the composition of biotic communities and ecosystem service and disservice potentials. The community composition of plants, microbes and web-building spiders differed significantly between organically and conventionally managed plots. The composition of communities and levels of ecosystem service and disservice potentials also differed significantly between organic orchards of different fruit type. Two potential pest groups (phytophagous nematodes and arthropods) were most abundant in peach subplots with high weed cover and tree age and least abundant in conventionally managed apricot plots. These results emphasize the crucial importance to consider weed-microbe-animal interactions when developing management practices in organic orchards. Management decisions in organic orchards hold the potential to affect biotic communities to the benefit of pest control and soil nutrient services, but can also result in unexpected detrimental effects on ecosystem services.

  • Computational discovery and functional validation of novel fluoroquinolone resistance genes in public metagenomic data sets
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMC Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2164. ; 18:1, s. Art 682-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Fluoroquinolones are broad-spectrum antibiotics used to prevent and treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Plasmid-mediated qnr genes provide resistance to fluoroquinolones in many bacterial species and are increasingly encountered in clinical settings. Over the last decade, several families of qnr genes have been discovered and characterized, but their true prevalence and diversity still remain unclear. In particular, environmental and host-associated bacterial communities have been hypothesized to maintain a large and unknown collection of qnr genes that could be mobilized into pathogens. Results: In this study we used computational methods to screen genomes and metagenomes for novel qnr genes. In contrast to previous studies, we analyzed an almost 20-fold larger dataset comprising almost 13 terabases of sequence data. In total, 362,843 potential qnr gene fragments were identified, from which 611 putative qnr genes were reconstructed. These gene sequences included all previously described plasmid-mediated qnr gene families. Fifty-two of the 611 identified qnr genes were reconstructed from metagenomes, and 20 of these were previously undescribed. All of the novel qnr genes were assembled from metagenomes associated with aquatic environments. Nine of the novel genes were selected for validation, and six of the tested genes conferred consistently decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin when expressed in Escherichia coli. Conclusions: The results presented in this study provide additional evidence for the ubiquitous presence of qnr genes in environmental microbial communities, expand the number of known qnr gene variants and further elucidate the diversity of this class of resistance genes. This study also strengthens the hypothesis that environmental bacterial communities act as sources of previously uncharacterized qnr genes.

  • Biocompatibility of a polymer based on Off-Stoichiometry Thiol-Enes + Epoxy (OSTE+) for neural implants.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2055-7124. ; 19:19, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The flexibility of implantable neural probes has increased during the last 10 years, starting with stiff materials such as silicone to more flexible materials like polyimide. We have developed a novel polymer based on Off-Stoichiometry Thiol-Enes + Epoxy (OSTE+, consisting of a thiol, two allyls, an epoxy resin and two initiators), which is up to 100 times more flexible than polyimide. Since a flexible neural probe should be more biocompatible than a stiff probe, an OSTE+ probe should be more biocompatible than one composed of a more rigid material. We have investigated the toxicity of OSTE+ as well as of OSTE+ that had been incubated in water for a week (OSTE+H2O) using MTT assays with mouse L929 fibroblasts. We found that OSTE+ showed cytotoxicity, but OSTE+H2O did not. Extracts were analyzed using LC-MS and GC-MS in order to identify leaked chemicals.
