  • An international, interprofessional investigation of the self-reported podcast listening habits of emergency clinicians: A METRIQ Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: CJEM. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1481-8043 .- 1481-8035. ; 22:1, s. 112-117

    • ObjectivesPodcasts are increasingly being used for medical education. A deeper understanding of usage patterns would inform both producers and researchers of medical podcasts. We aimed to determine how and why podcasts are used by emergency medicine and critical care clinicians.MethodsAn international interprofessional sample (medical students, residents, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and paramedics) was recruited through direct contact and a multimodal social media (Twitter and Facebook) campaign. Each participant completed a survey outlining how and why they utilize medical podcasts. Recruitment materials included an infographic and study website.Results390 participants from 33 countries and 4 professions (medicine, nursing, paramedicine, physician assistant) completed the survey. Participants most frequently listened to medical podcasts to review new literature (75.8%), learn core material (75.1%), and refresh memory (71.8%). The majority (62.6%) were aware of the ability to listen at increased speeds, but most (76.9%) listened at 1.0 x (normal) speed. All but 25 (6.4%) participants concurrently performed other tasks while listening. Driving (72.3%), exercising (39.7%), and completing chores (39.2%) were the most common. A minority of participants used active learning techniques such as pausing, rewinding, and replaying segments of the podcast. Very few listened to podcasts multiple times.ConclusionsAn international cohort of emergency clinicians use medical podcasts predominantly for learning. Their listening habits (rarely employing active learning strategies and frequently performing concurrent tasks) may not support this goal. Further exploration of the impact of these activities on learning from podcasts is warranted.

  • Conceptual design of the AGATA 2 pi array at LNL
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 1049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

  • Heightened aggression after chronic flunitrazepam in male rats: potential links to cortical and caudate-putamen-binding sites.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Psychopharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0033-3158 .- 1432-2072. ; 197:2, s. 309-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • RATIONALE: Higher doses of benzodiazepines induce sedation. However, in low to moderate doses, benzodiazepines can increase aggressive behavior both after acute and chronic administration. The determinants for increasing aggression after chronic intake of flunitrazepam, a so-called date rape drug, in violence-prone individuals are incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess the effects of acute and chronic treatment with flunitrazepam on male aggression in resident rats. We also examined possible changes in binding to benzodiazepine receptors throughout the brain of rats that display aggressive behavior after repeated flunitrazepam treatment using quantitative receptor autoradiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The behaviors of the male Wistar resident rats (n = 35) toward a male intruder were recorded for 10 min twice a week. The salient aggressive and non-aggressive elements in the resident rat's behavior were analyzed. Initially, the dose-dependent effects of flunitrazepam (0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.18, and 0.3 mg/kg) or vehicle were determined in all rats; subsequently, 0.3 mg/kg per day flunitrazepam was administered for 42 days (n = 15), and a parallel group was treated with vehicle (n = 20). After the chronic treatment, the flunitrazepam (0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.18, and 0.3 mg/kg) effects were again assessed. RESULTS: The most significant finding is the escalation of aggression after chronic treatment with flunitrazepam. A previously sedative 0.3 mg/kg dose of flunitrazepam engendered very high levels of attack bites, sideways threats, and aggressive postures (total aggression) after 6 weeks of daily administration. Individual differences emerged, and these were associated with decreased binding to benzodiazepine receptors, mainly in the limbic structures such as the cingulate cortex (cingulate areas 1 and 2) and caudate-putamen (posterior part) of aggressive animals, suggesting that these areas are pivotal in the control of emotional and aggressive behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic flunitrazepam produces changes in receptor binding in discrete areas of the cingulate cortex and caudate-putamen that are proposed to be part of the mechanisms for increased expression of aggressive behavior.

  • FlyDVS : An Event-Driven Wireless Ultra-Low Power Visual Sensor Node
  • 2021

    • Event-based cameras, also called dynamic vision sensors (DVS), inspired by the human vision system, are gaining popularity due to their potential energy-saving since they generate asynchronous events only from the pixels changes in the field of view. Unfortunately, in most current uses, data acquisition, processing, and streaming of data from event-based cameras are performed by power-hungry hardware, mainly high-power FPGAs. For this reason, the overall power consumption of an event-based system that includes digital capture and streaming of events, is in the order of hundreds of milliwatts or even watts, reducing significantly usability in real-life low-power applications such as wearable devices. This work presents FlyDVS, the first event-driven wireless ultra-low-power visual sensor node that includes a low-power Lattice FPGA and, a Bluetooth wireless system-on-chip, and hosts a commercial ultra-low-power DVS camera module. Experimental results show that the low-power FPGA can reach up to 874 efps (event-frames per second) with only 17.6mW of power, and the sensor node consumes an overall power of 35.5 mW (including wireless streaming) at 200 efps. We demonstrate FlyDVS in a real-life scenario, namely, to acquire event frames of a gesture recognition data set. © 2021 EDAA.

  • RTK-LoRa : High-Precision, Long-Range and Energy-Efficient Localization for Mobile IoT devices
  • 2020

    • High precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a crucial feature for geo-localization to enhance future applications such as self-driving vehicles. Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) is a promising technology to achieve centimeter precision in GNSS. However, it requires radio communication, which usually is power-hungry and costly, e.g. when using the 4G network. Hence, today RTK is not much exploited in low power energy-efficient devices. In this work, we present a novel sub-meter precision RTK-base system that also achieves the requirements of low power and energy efficiency. The proposed system exploits a novel GNSS module with RTK combined with a long-range and low-power radio (LoRa) to achieve geolocalization with minimal wireless radio infrastructure requirements. We evaluate three different GNSS modules and compare their performance in terms of power and especially precision. Experimental results, with in-field measurements, show an average accuracy of tens of centimeters with a single base station as geostationary reference anchor placed at kilometers of distance from the end-node performing the distance measurement. The peak accuracy measured was below 10cm. © 2020 IEEE.

    • High-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is a crucial geolocalization feature enabling a wide range of applications, from mobile Internet-of-Things devices to autonomous drones and self-driving vehicles. Real-time kinematic (RTK) is a GNSS technology that attracting increased interest due to the centimeter precision achievable when wireless communication is present on the devices. On the other hand, sending continuously wireless data increases the energy consumption and the cost of the solution, especially when communication is carried over the 4G network. Due to those drawbacks, RTK is not much exploited in the localization of battery-operated devices. This work combines RTK with low-power long-range communication to achieve submeter precision in an energy-efficient RTK-based system. The proposed system exploits a state-of-the-art RTK-GNSS module combined with a long range (LoRa) to achieve geolocalization with minimal wireless radio infrastructure requirements. An energy-efficient algorithm is proposed and implemented in a microcontroller to have a quick startup and high accuracy. We evaluate three different GNSS modules and compare their performance in terms of power and accuracy. Experimental results, with in-field measurements, show that an average geolocalization precision of tens of centimeters is achievable on a battery-operated wireless end node connected to a single base station used as a geostationary reference anchor placed at kilometers of distance. The peak precision measured is below 10 cm. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
