    • Azidolysis‐thermolysis of C‐19 diastereomer tosyl esters of morphine derivatives resulted in the formation of a new substituted 4‐azatetracyclo [4.4.02,4.03,8] decane ring system. As the course of such transformations depends on the chirality of C‐19, its relative configuration was determined both in the starting materials and in the new compounds. To this end a semiquantitative 1H{1H} NOE interpretation was combined with MMX molecular mechanics. Interestingly, both in the starting materials with a rotating C‐7—C‐19 bond and in the fairly rigid aziridine ring‐containing products, the same (H‐8α{19‐Me}) NOE effects were the most informative on the stereochemistry. In addition full a priori 1H and 13C assignments of 13 compounds are presented.

  • Importance of Thomas single-electron transfer in fast p-He collisions

    • We report experimental angular differential cross sections for nonradiative single-electron capture in p-He collisions (p + He -> H + He+) with a separate peak at the 0.47 mrad Thomas scattering angle for energies in the 1.3-12.5 MeV range. We find that the intensity of this peak scales with the projectile velocity as v(P)(-11). This constitutes the first experimental test of the prediction from 1927 by L. H. Thomas [Proc. R. Soc. 114, 561 (1927)]. At our highest energy, the peak at the Thomas angle contributes with 13.5% to the total integrated nonradiative single-electron capture cross section.

    • The new semisynthetic oripavine derivative 3-O-trityl-6-O-desmethyl-dihydroetorphine was synthesized from the poppy alkaloid thebaine in a six-step procedure. This compound can be applied as precursor for the radiosynthesis of [6-O-methyl-C-11]-dihydroetorphine ([C-11]DHE). We present a detailed description of H-1 and C-13 NMR data of reference standards and precursors for [6-O-methyl-C-11]- and [6-O-(2-[F-18]fluoroethyl]orvinols. This includes the complete assignment for 19 oripavine derivatives examined in 1D and 2D NMR experiments. We also investigated the molecular basis for regioselectivity of fluoroalkylation of 3-O-trityl-6-O-desmethyl-phenethyl-orvinol (TDPEO) using computational methods.

  • Post-collision interaction measured by coincidence spectrometry in the electron impact Auger process

    • Auger electron lineshapes after electron impact inner-shell ionization of argon at 500 eV primary electron energy are studied by the (e, 2e) coincidence technique. Emitted Auger electrons are detected in coincidence with the ionizing scattered electrons and the energy of the slow PCI inducer ejected electron is calculated from energy conservation. In particular, the strongly asymmetric energy sharing, and by this means the effect of the very low energy (i.e. 0-5 eV) ejected electrons, is measured and compared with calculations. The opposite case (equal energy sharing) is also studied.

    • We report the direct observation of interference effects in a Young's double-slit experiment where the interfering waves are two spatially separated components of the de Broglie wave of single 1.3 MeV hydrogen atoms formed close to either target nucleus in H+ + H2 electron-transfer collisions. Quantum interference strongly influences the results even though the hydrogen atoms have a de Broglie wavelength, \lambda_dB, as small as 25 fm.
