  • Trial of Deferiprone in Parkinson’s Disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 387:22, s. 2045-2055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDIron content is increased in the substantia nigra of persons with Parkinson's disease and may contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder. Early research suggests that the iron chelator deferiprone can reduce nigrostriatal iron content in persons with Parkinson's disease, but its effects on disease progression are unclear.METHODSWe conducted a multicenter, phase 2, randomized, double-blind trial involving participants with newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa. Participants were assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive oral deferiprone at a dose of 15 mg per kilogram of body weight twice daily or matched placebo for 36 weeks. Dopaminergic therapy was withheld unless deemed necessary for symptom control. The primary outcome was the change in the total score on the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS; range, 0 to 260, with higher scores indicating more severe impairment) at 36 weeks. Secondary and exploratory clinical outcomes at up to 40 weeks included measures of motor and nonmotor disability. Brain iron content measured with the use of magnetic resonance imaging was also an exploratory outcome.RESULTSA total of 372 participants were enrolled; 186 were assigned to receive deferiprone and 186 to receive placebo. Progression of symptoms led to the initiation of dopaminergic therapy in 22.0% of the participants in the deferiprone group and 2.7% of those in the placebo group. The mean MDS-UPDRS total score at baseline was 34.3 in the deferiprone group and 33.2 in the placebo group and increased (worsened) by 15.6 points and 6.3 points, respectively (difference, 9.3 points; 95% confidence interval, 6.3 to 12.2; P<0.001). Nigrostriatal iron content decreased more in the deferiprone group than in the placebo group. The main serious adverse events with deferiprone were agranulocytosis in 2 participants and neutropenia in 3 participants.CONCLUSIONSIn participants with early Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa and in whom treatment with dopaminergic medications was not planned, deferiprone was associated with worse scores in measures of parkinsonism than those with placebo over a period of 36 weeks.

  • KHM cable model parameters for ITU-T G.Fast reference loops
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE Conference on Standards for Communications and Networking, CSCN 2015. - 9781479989287 ; , s. 168-173
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • G.Fast is a new standard for fixed broadband access that aims at achieving bit rates of 1 Gb/s over short copper loops. In order to give support to simulation, design and performance evaluation tests, the G.Fast recommendation presents examples of some wiring topologies and reference loops describing configurations expected to be found in real G.Fast deployments. Our work describes results of modeling some types of lines adopted in these reference loops by means of a low complexity and causal parametric cable model. The results indicate that the modeling approach proposed in this work is accurate for all the analyzed cases, which include high quality, medium quality and low quality cables.

  • Simple and Causal Copper Cable Model Suitable for G.fast Frequencies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778. ; 62:11, s. 4040-4051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • G.fast is a new standard from the International Telecommunication Union, which targets 1 Gb/s over short copper loops using frequencies up to 212 MHz. This new technology requires accurate parametric cable models for simulation, design, and performance evaluation tests. Some existing copper cable models were designed for the very high speed digital subscriber line spectra, i.e., frequencies up to 30 MHz, and adopt assumptions that are violated when the frequency range is extended to G.fast frequencies. This paper introduces a simple and causal cable model that is able to accurately characterize copper loops composed by single or multiple segments, in both frequency and time domains. Results using G.fast topologies show that, apart from being accurate, the new model is attractive due to its low computational cost and closed-form expressions for fitting its parameters to measurement data.

  • RRM Challenges for Non-Conventional and Low-Cost Networks in Ambient Networks
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an overview of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) functionalities needed for Non-Conventional and Low-Cost Networks. These types of networks are characterized by increased cooperation between different types of networks and providers and they are believed to play a fundamental role for future wireless network networking. The paper describes three specific concepts, which latter is used to identify new RRM challenges. In addition, it identifies the relation between the RRM challenges and the Ambient Networks architecture and functionalities, in particular the multiradio resource management functionality.

  • A community-based geological reconstruction of Antarctic Ice Sheet deglaciation since the Last Glacial Maximum
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 100, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A robust understanding of Antarctic Ice Sheet deglacial history since the Last Glacial Maximum is important in order to constrain ice sheet and glacial-isostatic adjustment models, and to explore the forcing mechanisms responsible for ice sheet retreat. Such understanding can be derived from a broad range of geological and glaciological datasets and recent decades have seen an upsurge in such data gathering around the continent and Sub-Antarctic islands. Here, we report a new synthesis of those datasets, based on an accompanying series of reviews of the geological data, organised by sector. We present a series of timeslice maps for 20 ka, 15 ka, 10 ka and 5 ka, including grounding line position and ice sheet thickness changes, along with a clear assessment of levels of confidence. The reconstruction shows that the Antarctic Ice sheet did not everywhere reach the continental shelf edge at its maximum, that initial retreat was asynchronous, and that the spatial pattern of deglaciation was highly variable, particularly on the inner shelf. The deglacial reconstruction is consistent with a moderate overall excess ice volume and with a relatively small Antarctic contribution to meltwater pulse la. We discuss key areas of uncertainty both around the continent and by time interval, and we highlight potential priorities for future work. The synthesis is intended to be a resource for the modelling and glacial geological community.

  • Complement Activation Correlates With Disease Severity and Contributes to Cytokine Responses in Plasmodium falciparum Malaria
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Internet Journal of Infectious Diseases. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1528-8366 .- 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 212:11, s. 1835-1840
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of complement activation and its possible relation to cytokine responses during malaria pathology was investigated in plasma samples from patients with confirmed Plasmodium falciparum malaria and in human whole-blood specimens stimulated with malaria-relevant agents ex vivo. Complement was significantly activated in the malaria cohort, compared with healthy controls, and was positively correlated with disease severity and with certain cytokines, in particular interleukin 8 (IL-8)/CXCL8. This was confirmed in ex vivo-stimulated blood specimens, in which complement inhibition significantly reduced IL-8/CXCL8 release. P. falciparum malaria is associated with systemic complement activation and complement-dependent release of inflammatory cytokines, of which IL-8/CXCL8 is particularly prominent.

  • Keyword Transformer: A Self-Attention Model for Keyword Spotting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proc. Interspeech 2021. ; , s. 4249-4253
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Transformer architecture has been successful across many domains, including natural language processing, computer vision and speech recognition. In keyword spotting, self-attention has primarily been used on top of convolutional or recurrent encoders. We investigate a range of ways to adapt the Transformer architecture to keyword spotting and introduce the Keyword Transformer (KWT), a fully self-attentional architecture that exceeds state-of-the-art performance across multiple tasks without any pre-training or additional data. Surprisingly, this simple architecture outperforms more complex models that mix convolutional, recurrent and attentive layers. KWT can be used as a drop-in replacement for these models, setting two new benchmark records on the Google Speech Commands dataset with 98.6% and 97.7% accuracy on the 12 and 35-command tasks respectively.

  • Public Planning, Neoliberal Hybridity and Local Activism in Sundbyberg : Epochal Reconfiguration of Urban Development in Greater Stockholm
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Which urban policy responses are deployed when a small social democratic municipality in a greater city region aims to be competitive for private investments in housing and the built environment? Which new institutional development arrangements are implemented for this purpose, in the wake of a decades-long hegemonic position of the municipal public housing company? This thesis draws on a qualitative case study design to approach such questions, and investigates recent urban development in Sundbybergs stad in Greater Stockholm to answer them. Theoretically, the thesis draws on a theory of neoliberal localization in combination with Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the social production of space. The thesis is thereby able to explain how the municipality consolidated political power, institutional infrastructures, and administrative capacities with a view to introducing a market-based paradigm of urban development. It argues that this paradigm became characterized by a neoliberal hybridity. It supports this argument by analyzing three major development projects targeting three areas with very different sociospatial characteristics. The thesis thereby demonstrates how market-based developments integrated a number of regulatory features and public planning interventions in accordance with certain objectives, concerns, and conditions. E.g., it reveals how the development of a 1970s Million Homes Programme area, Hallonbergen, relied both on an extended sale of public assets to support private developers’ investments with the objective of comprehensively transforming the area, and on extraordinary measures for ‘social sustainability’. It also reveals how the development of the original municipal town, Central Sundbyberg, was arranged in a municipal development company. This established a business-like format for political control and external expertise, while undermining public planning and clouding democratic accountability. This point is further emphasized by analyzing local inhabitants’ methods for contesting certain development features and land use proposals in this project, enforcing a re-politicization of a largely depoliticized development project. Ultimately, the thesis contributes new knowledge on the variegating forms of neoliberal urbanism through an atypical case of a subordinate city region municipality that historically has been characterized by social democracy, a large public rental housing structure, a public housing company with control of spatial planning, and working-class populations and industries.

  • A Concept for Public Access to Privately Operated Cooperating Local Access Points
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. - New York : IEEE. - 0780388879 ; , s. 2959-2963
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For many future mobile communication scenarios, the traditional operators are believed to be unable or unwilling to support some services, mainly for cost reasons. Thus, there will always be gaps in the coverage and capacity of these systems.   This paper describes a non-conventional and low-cost concept for wireless access using privately operated local access points (LAPs) contributing to the public access, thus adding coverage and capacity in e.g. homes, offices and public hotspots.  The work has been performed in the EU-funded Ambient Networks (AN) project. A migration path is presented, starting with today’s LAPs for private-use-only to LAPs for public use, implementing the AN objective of “access for anyone to any network”. The main contributions in the paper are 1) the identification and analysis of re-use of fixed and wireless transport and access capacity using adhoc mesh networks between LAPs and 2) the use of network advertising &  discovery for LAP concepts.

  • A Radio Resource Management Concept for "Bunched" Personal Communication Systems
  • 1997
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The  radio  resource  management  (RRM)  techniques  used  in  current  2nd  generation  mobile communication systems rely heavily on fixed frequency or timeslot allocation  techniques  which  are  not  well  suited  for  large  variations  in  data  rates.  Spread  spectrum  systems  proposed  provide  partial  solutions  to  this  problem  but  exhibit  deficiencies  when  faced  with  uneven  user  populations.  The  overall  objective  of  ACTS  project  AC090  FRAMES  is  to  define,  develop  and  evaluate  a  wideband  multiple radio access scheme fulfilling  the UMTS requirements. Within  the project  several RRM concepts have been proposed. The "bunch" concept discussed  in  this  paper uses synchronous dynamic physical layer radio resource reservation combined  with fast SIR based power control in a local cluster ("bunch").  Uncontrolled, "inter  bunch",  interference  is  handled  by  time/frequency  hopping  ("interference  averaging"). In the paper some initial performance results are presented.
