  • Charge Transfer in the P(g42T-T) : BBL Organic Polymer Heterojunction Measured with Core-Hole Clock Spectroscopy

    • The conductivity of organic polymer heterojunction devices relies on the electron dynamics occurring along interfaces between the acceptor and donor moieties. To investigate these dynamics with chemical specificity, spectroscopic techniques are employed to obtain localized snapshots of the electron behavior at selected interfaces. In this study, charge transfer in blends (by weight 10, 50, 90, and 100%) of p-type polymer P(g(4)2T-T) (bithiophene-thiophene) and n-type polymer BBL (poly(benzimidazo-benzo-phenanthroline)) was measured by resonant Auger spectroscopy. Electron spectra emanating from the decay of core-excited states created upon X-ray absorption in the donor polymer P(g(4)2T-T) were measured in the sulfur KL2,3L2,3 Auger kinetic energy region as a function of the excitation energy. By tuning the photon energy across the sulfur K-absorption edge, it is possible to differentiate between decay paths in which the core-excited electron remained on the atom with the core-hole and those where it tunneled away. Analyzing the competing decay modes of these localized and delocalized (charge-transfer) processes facilitated the computation of charge-transfer times as a function of excitation energy using the core-hole clock method. The electron delocalization times derived from the measurements were found to be in the as/fs regime for all polymer blends, with the fastest charge transfer occurring in the sample with an equal amount of donor and acceptor polymer. These findings highlight the significance of core-hole clock spectroscopy as a chemically specific tool for examining the local charge tunneling propensity, which is fundamental to understanding macroscopic conductivity. Additionally, the X-ray absorption spectra near the sulfur K-edge in the P(g(4)2T-T) polymer for different polymer blends were analyzed to compare molecular structure, orientation, and ordering in the polymer heterojunctions. The 50% donor sample exhibited the most pronounced angular dependence of absorption, indicating a higher level of ordering compared to the other weight blends. Our studies on the electron dynamics of this type of all-polymer donor-acceptor systems, in which spontaneous ground-state electron transfer occurs, provide us with critical insights to further advance the next generation of organic conductors with mixed electron-hole conduction characteristics suitable for highly stable electrodes of relevance for electronic, electrochemical, and optoelectronic applications.

    • Adherence of metal oxides to graphene is of fundamental significance to graphene nanoelectronic and spintronic interfaces. Titanium oxide and aluminum oxide are two widely used tunnel barriers in such devices, which offer optimum interface resistance and distinct interface conditions that govern transport parameters and device performance. Here, we reveal a fundamental difference in how these metal oxides interface with graphene through electrical transport measurements and Raman and photoelectron spectroscopies, combined with ab initio electronic structure calculations of such interfaces. While both oxide layers cause surface charge transfer induced p-type doping in graphene, in sharp contrast to TiOx, the AlOx/graphene interface shows the presence of appreciable sp3 defects. Electronic structure calculations disclose that significant p-type doping occurs due to a combination of sp3 bonds formed between C and O atoms at the interface and possible slightly off-stoichiometric defects of the aluminum oxide layer. Furthermore, the sp3 hybridization at the AlOx/graphene interface leads to distinct magnetic moments of unsaturated bonds, which not only explicates the widely observed low spin-lifetimes in AlOx barrier graphene spintronic devices but also suggests possibilities for new hybrid resistive switching and spin valves.

    • Engaging in productive struggle during problem-solving activities can be viewed as critical to learning mathematics. In this paper, we explore how mathematical praxeologies can be utilized to describe students’ struggle with mathematical problem-solving. The results indicate that the students’ productive struggle with an optimization problem involving functions, graphs, and derivatives, contains long sequences where the students switch rapidly within and between mathematical praxeologies. During the work session as a whole, the students mix coherent arguments with tentative and on occasion unproductive arguments focusing on technology. One notable exception among these attempts is a theoretical moment where the students reduce the complexity of a previous subtask by deducing a general equation which provides them with key ideas on how to solve the given task.

    • PURPOSE: Current hypothesis regarding the mechanism of active tear drainage is based on studies performed ex vivo or under nonphysiological conditions. Novel ultra-high-frequency ultrasound has the advantage of generating images with superior resolution, enabling measurements of low flow in small vessels, and the tracking of tissue motion in real time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lacrimal drainage system and active drainage using this modality.METHODS: The upper lacrimal drainage system was investigated with 40-70 MHz ultrasound in 22 eyes in 13 patients. Irrigation confirmed a lacrimal obstruction in 10 eyes. Motion tracking was used to map movement of the lateral lacrimal sac wall and to measure flow when possible.RESULTS: The anatomy of the upper lacrimal drainage system was mapped in vivo, including the proximal canaliculi, which have not previously been imaged. The lacrimal sac lumen is slit shaped in its resting state but is distended when irrigated or if a nasolacrimal duct obstruction is present. Thus, the healthy lacrimal sac is not a cavity, and the medial retinaculum does not act against a stretched structure. Motion tracking visualized the "lacrimal pump," showing that the direction of motion of the lateral lacrimal sac wall is mainly in the sagittal plane during blinking.CONCLUSIONS: Ultra-high-frequency ultrasound allows detailed physiological monitoring of the upper lacrimal drainage system in vivo. Our findings suggest that current theories of active tear drainage need to be reappraised.

    • The development of new x-ray imaging techniques often requires prior knowledge of tissue attenuation, but the sources of such information are sparse. We have measured the attenuation of adipose breast tissue using spectral imaging, in vitro and in vivo. For the in-vitro measurement, fixed samples of adipose breast tissue were imaged on a spectral mammography system, and the energy-dependent x-ray attenuation was measured in terms of equivalent thicknesses of aluminum and poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA). For the in-vivo measurement, a similar procedure was applied on a number of spectral screening mammograms. The results of the two measurements agreed well and were consistent with published attenuation data and with measurements on tissue-equivalent material.

  • Elemental distribution and fracture properties of magnetron sputtered carbon supersaturated tungsten films

    • The combination of strength and toughness is a major driving force for alloy design of protective coatings, and nanocrystalline tungsten (W)-alloys have shown to be promising candidates for combining strength and toughness. Here we investigate the elemental distribution and the fracture toughness of carbon (C) alloyed W thin films prepared by non-reactive magnetron sputtering. W:C films with up to ~4 at.% C crystallize in a body-centered-cubic structure with a strong 〈hh0〉texture, and no additional carbide phases are observed in the diffraction pattern. Atom probe tomography and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of such a supersaturated solid solution. The pure W film has a hardness ~13 GPa and the W:C films exhibit a peak hardness of ~24 GPa. In-situ micromechanical cantilever bending tests show that the fracture toughness decreases from ~4.5 MPa·m1/2 for the W film to ~3.1 MPa·m1/2 for W:C films. The results show that C can significantly enhance the hardness of W thin films while retaining a high fracture toughness.
