  • Type 1 diabetic serum interferes with pancreatic beta-cell Ca2+-handling
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Bioscience reports. - : Portland Press Ltd.. - 0144-8463 .- 1573-4935. ; 27:6, s. 321-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to clarify the frequency of patients with type 1 diabetes that have serum that increases pancreatic β-cell cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration, [Ca2+]i, and if such an effect is also present in serum from first-degree relatives. We also studied a possible link between the serum effect and ethnic background as well as presence of autoantibodies. Sera obtained from three different countries were investigated as follows: 82 Swedish Caucasians with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, 56 Americans with different duration of type 1 diabetes, 117 American first-degree relatives of type 1 diabetic patients with a mixed ethnic background and 31 Caucasian Finnish children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Changes in [Ca2+]i, upon depolarization, were measured in β-cells incubated overnight with sera from type 1 diabetic patients, first-degree relatives or healthy controls. Our data show that there is a group constituting approximately 30% of type 1 diabetic patients of different gender, age, ethnic background and duration of the disease, as well as first-degree relatives of type 1 diabetic patients, that have sera that interfere with pancreatic β-cell Ca2+-handling. This effect on β-cell [Ca2+]i could not be correlated to the presence of autoantibodies. In a defined subgroup of patients with type 1 diabetes and first-degree relatives a defect Ca2+-handling may aggravate development of β-cell destruction.

  • Heart rate variability in children with fontan circulation : lateral tunnel and extracardiac conduit
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Cardiology. - New York : Springer-Verlag New York. - 0172-0643 .- 1432-1971. ; 33:2, s. 307-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The technique in Fontan surgery has developed from the lateral tunnel (LT) toward the extracardiac conduit (EC) used to reduce long-term complications such as atrial arrhythmia and sinus node dysfunction. Heart rate variability (HRV) examines cardiac nervous activity controlling the sinus node. This study aimed to investigate HRV in a cohort of children with univentricular hearts, focusing on the relation between HRV and surgical procedure. For 112 children with Fontan circulation, HRV was analyzed using power spectral analysis. Spectral power was determined in three regions: very-low-frequency (VLF), low-frequency (LF), and high-frequency (HF) regions. Patients were compared with 66 healthy controls subject. Patients with LT were compared with patients who had EC. The children with Fontan circulation showed a significantly reduced HRV including total power (P < 0.0001), VLF (P < 0.0001), LF (P < 0.0001), and HF (P = 0.001) compared with the control subjects. The LT and EC patients did not differ significantly. Reduced HRV was found in both the LT and EC patients. In terms of HRV reduction, EC was not superior to LT.

  • Epibenthic colonization of concrete and steel pilingsin a cold-temperate embayment : a feld experiment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Helgoland Marine Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1438-387X .- 1438-3888. ; 63:3, s. 249-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With large-scale development of offshore wind farms, vertical structures are becoming more common in open water areas. To examine how vertical structures of different materials may be colonized by epibenthic organisms, an experiment was carried out using steel and concrete pilings constructed to resemble those commonly used in wind farm constructions as well as in bridges, jetties and oil platforms. The early recruitment and succession of the epibenthic communities were sampled once a month for the first 5 months and then again after 1 year. Further, the fish assemblages associated with the pillars were sampled and compared to natural areas. The main epibenthic species groups, in terms of coverage, diVered between the two materials at five out of six sampling occasions. Dominant organisms on steel pillars were the barnacle Balanus improvisus, the calcareous tubeworm Pomatoceros triqueter and the tunicate Ciona intestinalis. On the concrete pillars, the hydroid Laomedea sp. and the tunicates Corella parallelogramma and Ascidiella spp. dominated. However, there was no different in coverage at different heights on the pillars or in biomass and species abundance at different directions (north-east or south-west) 5 months after submergence. Fish showed overall higher abundances and species numbers on the pillars (but no difference between steel and concrete)compared to the surrounding soft bottom habitats but not compared to natural vertical rock walls. Two species were attracted to the pillars, indicating a reef effect; Gobiusculus flavescens and Ctenolabrus rupestris. The bottom-dwelling gobies, Pomatoschistus spp., did not show such preferences.

  • A 600-year annual 10Be record from the NGRIP ice core, Greenland
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 36, s. L11801-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the extensive use of 10Be as the most significant information source on past solar activity, there has been only one record (Dye-3, Greenland) providing annual resolution over several centuries. Here we report a new annual resolution 10Be record spanning the period 1389-1994 AD, measured in an ice core from the NGRIP site in Greenland. NGRIP and Dye-3 10Be exhibits similar long-term variability, although occasional short term differences between the two sites indicate that at least two high resolution 10Be records are needed to assess local variations and to confidently reconstruct past solar activity. A comparison with sunspot and neutron records confirms that ice core 10Be reflects solar Schwabe cycle variations, and continued 10Be variability suggests cyclic solar activity throughout the Maunder and Spörer grand solar activity minima. Recent 10Be values are low; however, they do not indicate unusually high recent solar activity compared to the last 600 years.

  • Quality transformation of dissolved organic carbon during water transit through lakes : contrasting controls by photochemical and biological processes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : European Geosciences Union (EGU). - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 15:2, s. 457-470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may be removed, transformed, or added during water transit through lakes, resulting in changes in DOC composition and pigmentation (color). However, the process-based understanding of these changes is incomplete, especially for headwater lakes. We hypothesized that because heterotrophic bacteria preferentially consume noncolored DOC, while photochemical processing removes colored fractions, the overall changes in DOC color upon water passage through a lake depend on the relative importance of these two processes, accordingly. To test this hypothesis we combined laboratory experiments with field studies in nine boreal lakes, assessing both the relative importance of different DOC decay processes (biological or photochemical) and the loss of color during water transit time (WTT) through the lakes. We found that influence from photo-decay dominated changes in DOC quality in the epilimnia of relatively clear headwater lakes, resulting in systematic and selective net losses of colored DOC. However, in highly pigmented brown-water lakes (absorbance at 420 nm > 7 m(-1)) biological processes dominated, and there was no systematic relationship between color loss and WTT. Moreover, in situ data and dark experiments supported our hypothesis on the selective microbial removal of nonpigmented DOC, mainly of low molecular weight, leading to persistent water color in these highly colored lakes. Our study shows that brown headwater lakes may not conform to the commonly reported pattern of the selective removal of colored constituents in freshwaters, as DOC can show a sustained degree of pigmentation upon transit through these lakes.

  • Synthesis of a miniaturized [FeFe] hydrogenase model system
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 48:7, s. 2280-2284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reaction occurring during artificial maturation of [FeFe] hydrogenase has been recreated using molecular systems. The formation of a miniaturized [FeFe] hydrogenase model system, generated through the combination of a [4Fe4S] cluster binding oligopeptide and an organometallic Fe complex, has been monitored by a range of spectroscopic techniques. A structure of the final assembly is suggested based on EPR and FTIR spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations. The capacity of this novel H-cluster model to catalyze H-2 production in aqueous media at mild potentials is verified in chemical assays.

  • Friend or foe : exploring master suppression techniques on Facebook
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Information research. - 1368-1613. ; 21:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. This paper focuses on the unexplored area of master suppression techniques on Facebook. A lot is known about these techniques in offline contexts, but very little is known about their application in the online context in general or their use and nature on social media in particular. This paper therefore explores the use of master suppression techniques on a social media platform. Method. We used a netnographic approach based on passive and unobtrusive observations of 30 open forums on Facebook. Approximately 1000 threads and posts were observed. Analysis. We analyzed the gathered data using qualitative content analysis techniques based on the concepts of meaning units, condensed meaning units, codes, subcategories, categories and themes. Results. People apply a range of master suppression techniques on Facebook, some of which have been imported from offline contexts while others have not. Conclusions. We were able to determine which master suppression techniques people apply on Facebook and show that they appear to be harsher than we initially expected. A categorisation model for master suppression techniques used on Facebook was developed using these findings.
