  • “Adolescents who feel depressed are rejected but do not withdraw: A longitudinal study of ethnically diverse friendship networks in England, Sweden, and Germany”
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SSM - Population Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-8273. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adolescents who feel depressed are likely to experience social isolation from friends. Previous studies have put forward at least four hypotheses that can account for the association between felt depression and social isolation. The hypotheses are: (1) adolescents who are rejected tend to feel more depressed, (2) adolescents who feel depressed tend to become rejected, (3) adolescents who withdraw from friends tend to feel more depressed, and (4) adolescents who feel depressed tend to withdraw from friends. The present study aims to test these four hypotheses in ethnically diverse contexts in three countries. Two waves of data from England (n = 515), Sweden (n = 1,228), and Germany (n = 869) were obtained from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU). One separate stochastic actor-oriented model of the longitudinal coevolution of friendship networks and felt depression was estimated for each of the three countries using the statistical package RSiena. The results consistently indicated that, in all three countries, adolescents who felt depressed were rejected by their peers. Also, the results consistently indicated that adolescents who felt depressed sought more friends, and the results therefore refuted the suggestion that adolescents who feel depressed withdraw from their friends. The findings of the study can inform health-promotion interventions that attempt to limit the social isolation of adolescents who feel depressed in ethnically diverse contexts. More specifically, the study suggests that the social isolation of adolescents who feel depressed may be limited through interventions that reduce the rejection that these adolescents experience from their peers.

  • Smoking Motivation in the Face of Stigmatization : A Bourdieusian Analysis of Impressions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Stigma and Health. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 2376-6972 .- 2376-6964. ; 4:1, s. 30-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earlier research from Western countries has indicated that individuals with low socioeconomic status(SES) initiate tobacco smoking even though smoking is a stigmatized practice. We propose thattheoretical developments of Bourdieu’s theories on capital can reveal a plausible mechanism thatexplains smoking motivation in the face of stigmatization, and we perform a double-blind randomizedcontrolled experiment with the impressions of a smoking adolescent girl to test and elaborate on ourproposition. The empirical data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 622 Swedishadolescents during the fall of 2015. Half the questionnaires included a picture of a smoking girl and halfthe questionnaires included an identical picture without the act of smoking. Binary logistic regressionsindicate that the girl in the picture was perceived as significantly less likable, more popular, less kind, less compassionate, more deceitful, more conceited, and more liable to bully when she smoked a cigarettethan when she did not smoke. The theoretical analysis implies that adolescents with low SES may seekto smoke in the face of stigmatization because of a motivating mechanism that functions in accordancewith Bourdieu’s economic logic of action. The concluding section presents implications for tobaccocontrolpolicies.

  • An Analysis of the Psychometric Properties of the Social Responsibility Goal Orientation Scale Using Adolescent Data from Sweden
  • 2020. - 1
  • Ingår i: Rasch Measurement. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811517990 - 9789811518003 ; , s. 241-259
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Achievement Goal Theory, different reasons for learning are contrasted. Mastery and Performance are most commonly used while less attention is paid to Social Responsibility goal orientations, despite that this is an integral part of many curricula. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the psychometric properties of a scale of Social Responsibility goal orientation by means of the polytomous Rasch model. The analysis is based on longitudinal data among Swedish students. One cohort (born 1992) of students in school year 9 (15-16 years old) were subjected to analysis. In total, 6,010 students responded to a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. A scale consisting of six polytomous items is analysed. General-fit statistics as well as their graphical representations (ICC) are used to evaluate the fit to the Rasch model. The social responsibility scale seems to fit the Rasch model fairly well, with good separation of individuals, and showing no reversed item thresholds, i.e., the response categories work as intended. However, there are indications of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) by gender and local dependency.

  • Computations in the Grothendieck Group of Stacks
  • 2012
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Given an algebraic group, one may consider the class of its classifying stackin the Grothendieck group of stacks. This is an invariant studied byEkedahl. For certain connected groups, called the special groups bySerre and Grothendieck, the invariant simply gives the inverse of the class ofthe group itself. It is natural to ask whether the same is true for otherconnected groups. We investigate this for the groups PGL(2) and PGL(3) under mild restrictions on the choice of base field. In the case of PGL(2), the question turns out to have a positive answer. In the case of PGL(3), we reduce the question to the computation of the invariant for thenormaliser of a maximal torus in PGL(3). The reduction involves determiningthe class of a certain gerbe over the moduli stack of elliptic curves.

  • Den värmländska skolan
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Värmländska utmaningar. - Karlstad : Karlstad University Press. - 9789189673366 ; , s. 423-434
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Destackification and Motivic Classes of Stacks
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of three articles treating topics in the theory of algebraic stacks. The first two papers deal with motivic invariants. In the first, we show that the class of the classifying stack BPGLn is the inverse of the class of PGLn in the Grothendieck ring of stacks for n ≤ 3. This shows that the multiplicativity relation holds for the universal torsors, although it is known not to hold for torsors ingeneral for the groups PGL2 and PGL3.In the second paper, we introduce an exponential function which can be viewed as a generalisation of Kapranov's motivic zeta function. We use this to derive a binomial theorem for a power operation defined on the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an explicit expression for the motivic class of a universal quasi-split torus, which generalises a result by Rökaeus. The last paper treats destackification. We give an algorithm for removing stackiness from smooth, tame stacks with abelian stabilisers by repeatedly applying stacky blow-ups. As applications, we indicate how the result can be used for destackifying general Deligne–Mumford stacks in characteristic zero, and to obtain a weak factorisation theorem for such stacks.

  • Functorial destackification of tame stacks with abelian stabilisers
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article, we study the problem of modifying smooth, algebraic stacks with finite, diagonalisable stabilisers such that their coarse spaces become smooth. The only modifications used are root stacks and blow-ups in smooth centres. If the generic stabiliser of the original stack is trivial, the canonical map from the resulting stack to its coarse space is also a root stack. Hence we can think of the process as removing stackiness from, or destackifying, a smooth stack with help of stacky blow-ups. The construction work over a general base and are functorial in the sense that they respect base change andcompositions with gerbes and smooth, stabiliser preserving maps. As applications, we indicate how this can be used for destackifying general Deligne-Mumford stacks with finite inertia in characteristic zero, and to obtain a weak factorisation theorem for such stacks. Over any field, the method can be used for desingularising locally simplicial toric varieties, without assuming the presence of toroidal structures.
