  • Power-line corridors as source habitat for butterflies in forest landscapes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biological Conservation. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0006-3207 .- 1873-2917. ; 201, s. 320-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern intensified agriculture has decreased farmland heterogeneity, which has led to strong negative effects on farmland biodiversity. However, partly forested landscapes seem to offer many alternative habitats for open habitat species such as butterflies, since modern forestry and development of infrastructure has created several new environments such as forest road verges and power-line corridors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the importance of power-line corridors (PLCs) as butterfly habitats by testing i) if species richness and abundance of butterflies in PLCs are affected by adjacent habitat composition (i.e. comparisons of PLCs with different adjacent habitats), ii) if PLCs act as source habitat through spill-over of individuals into adjacent forest roads and semi-natural pastures and iii) if species composition differs among the investigated habitat types. To investigate this we censured the butterfly fauna in 23 study landscapes in south-central Sweden. We found support for the hypothesis that PLCs may act as source habitats for butterflies in forest roads and pastures, since species richness and abundance were decreasing with increasing distance to PLC from 0 to 500 m. In addition, the species composition in forest roads and pastures close to and far from PLCs was similar, suggesting that this increase was not due to an increase of PLC specialists in the other two habitats. Thus, we have shown that PLCs in themselves are important butterfly habitats independently of adjacent habitat composition (adjacent mature forest, clear cuts or arable land), and they contribute to increased species richness and abundance of butterflies in surrounding areas over 10 times larger than their own width. • Reflections on an Integrated Content and Language Project-Based Design of a Technical Communication Course for Electrical Engineering Students.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Academic Writing. - 2225-8973. ; 3:1, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effective ways of teaching technical communication skills to engineering students have been much discussed. This article reflects on one setting, a first year course in Technical Communication at a university in Sweden, where electrical engineering teachers, language and communication teachers and student counsellors work in close, team-based cooperation using a project model which requires the students to analyse, implement and communicate technical problems. The paper discusses the change in this course - from an EAP course primarily prioritizing language training which ran parallel with a project course - to one unified ICL course. The progression is described through the changes in the organization of the course, and the article focuses on one learning activity: interdisciplinary tutorials on project reports. Through a pilot study where these sessions were video recorded and mapped, we conclude that the presence of different roles became an asset for the range of what the students see as relevant for their project report. In particular, the technical report genre was critically analysed, including problematic areas such as textual sequencing and display of technical problems; data visualisation and commentary; and referencing.

  • Accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging staging of tumour and nodal stage in rectal cancer treated by primary surgery : a population-based study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Colorectal Disease. - : Wiley. - 1462-8910 .- 1463-1318. ; 24:9, s. 1047-1053
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The preoperative stage of rectal cancer is an important prognostic factor affecting treatment recommendations. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used for clinical staging to identify patients who should be recommended for neoadjuvant oncological treatment. The aim of this work was to investigate the accuracy of the preoperative T- and N-stage and also involvement of the mesorectal fascia (MRF) as determined by MRI in a Swedish national cohort. Method: Patients who had undergone resectional surgery for rectal cancer without neoadjuvant treatment in Sweden in the period 2013–2017 were identified through the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry (n = 2062). The T- and N-stage determined by preoperative MRI were compared with the histopathological results. The MRI-assessed MRF status was compared with the circumferential resection margin. Results: Sensitivity for differentiating T1-2 from T3-4 was 69% and specificity 77%. Sensitivity to detect N1-2 was 42% and specificity 81%. Sensitivity for MRF positivity was 50% and specificity 92%. Agreement analysed by weighted kappa analysis was 0.47 for T-stage [confidence interval (CI) 0.44–0.51], 0.24 for N-stage (CI 0.19–0.24) and 0.20 for MRF status (CI 0.12–0.29). Conclusion: In this study, accuracy of the preoperative MRI was lower than expected for rectal cancers. Overstaging might lead to potentially harmful neoadjuvant treatment and understaging can lead to a higher risk of tumour recurrence. The results of this study show that efforts should be made to increase the accuracy of the preoperative evaluation in order to optimize treatment recommendations.

  • Subcortical volumes across the lifespan : Data from 18,605 healthy individuals aged 3-90 years.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Human Brain Mapping. - : Wiley. - 1065-9471 .- 1097-0193. ; 43:1, s. 452-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Age has a major effect on brain volume. However, the normative studies available are constrained by small sample sizes, restricted age coverage and significant methodological variability. These limitations introduce inconsistencies and may obscure or distort the lifespan trajectories of brain morphometry. In response, we capitalized on the resources of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to examine age-related trajectories inferred from cross-sectional measures of the ventricles, the basal ganglia (caudate, putamen, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens), the thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala using magnetic resonance imaging data obtained from 18,605 individuals aged 3-90 years. All subcortical structure volumes were at their maximum value early in life. The volume of the basal ganglia showed a monotonic negative association with age thereafter; there was no significant association between age and the volumes of the thalamus, amygdala and the hippocampus (with some degree of decline in thalamus) until the sixth decade of life after which they also showed a steep negative association with age. The lateral ventricles showed continuous enlargement throughout the lifespan. Age was positively associated with inter-individual variability in the hippocampus and amygdala and the lateral ventricles. These results were robust to potential confounders and could be used to examine the functional significance of deviations from typical age-related morphometric patterns.

  • Anaerobic Degradation of Nonylphenol Mono- and Diethoxylates in Digestor Sludge, Landfilled Municipal Solid Waste, and Landfilled Sludge
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1086-931X .- 1520-6912 .- 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 33:2, s. 301-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which anaerobic digestor sludge, landfilled sludge, and landfilled municipal solid waste (MSW) degrade NPEOs under methanogenic conditions. NPEO1 and NPEO2 (NPEO1-2), used in a mixture, were chosen as model compounds. Anaerobic experimental bottles were amended with 100% digestor sludge at three different concentrations of NPEO1-2:  2, 60, and 308 mg L-1. [U-14C]-NPEO1-2 was used to detect any possible decomposition of the aromatic moiety of the NPEO1-2. All inoculates used degraded NPEO1-2 at 2 mg L-1, with nonylphenol (NP) forming the ultimate degradation product. The NP formed was not further degraded, and the incubations with labeled NPEO showed that the aromatic structure remained intact. Both landfill inoculates also transformed NPEO1-2 at 60 mg L-1. CH4 production was temporarily hampered in bottles with MSW landfill inoculum at 60 and 308 mg L-1. With 2 mg L-1 of NPEO, CH4 production closely followed that in the controls. Both NP and NPEO1-2 interacted with the organic matter which resulted in sorption to the solid phase.

  • Improvement of frequency response for a zero-flux current measuring system
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: CPEM Digest (Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements). - 0589-1485. - 9781479952052 ; , s. 618-619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic zero-flux current transformers are widely utilized to measure AC and DC electrical currents. To improve the AC characteristics between 10 Hz and 100 kHz, a method is proposed to evaluate adjustments in the circuitry; increase of the amplification in the AC feed-back circuit and introduction of an external coaxial read-out shunt resistor. The method is generally applicable and includes a coaxial current path within the entire reference system and traceability to national standards. The AC working range is extended from about 1 kHz to about 3 kHz. Outside the nominal AC working range, the scale factor variation is reduced from 45 % to 3.5% and the phase angle error offset changes from ca 5.8 μs to below 0.3 μs.
