- The possible bronchocarcinogenic effects of fumes released during the shielded metal arc welding of stainless steel and the thermal spraying of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) have been studied on the rat. The fume particles were shown to contain tri- and hexavalent chromium in soluble and low soluble forms; they were collected and implanted as pellets in the bronchi of groups of 100 rats by the method of Laskin et al. A negative control group of 100 rats was included, as well as positive controls receiving pellets containing benz(a)pyrene. The experiment was continued for 34 months; no differences of biological significance were noted between the growth rates, survival times, and terminal organ weights of the test and negative control groups. At autopsy, the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of the organs in the three groups, including the local reaction to the implanted pellet, were similar. No precancerous changes were observed at the implantation sites; one rat, who received a pellet containing welding fumes, showed squamous cell carcinoma remote from the implantation site and not associated with the bronchus. It had the appearance of a metastasis. All three benz(a)pyrene control rats developed cancer at the implantation site. The occupational health implications of these findings are discussed.

- The electric road system (ERS) receives increasing attention as a potential solution to cope with the transition to environmentally friendly heavy road transport. Moving from the initial technology development phase to the technology demonstration phase has motivated the creation of demonstration projects. Thus, ERS-project organizations have evolved.This report makes an inquiry into the organizing of ERS-projects. It is based on a comparative analysis of the two ongoing demonstration projects in Sweden; eRoadArlanda and eHighway E16. The study addresses what implications the current ERS demonstration projects can provide through a stakeholder assessment.The outcome of the study is 11 implications for the organizing of ERS demonstration and deployment projects. These are divided among the six perspectives: project leadership, electric road vehicle, electric infrastructure, funding, verification, and interest vs power.

Effects of age, gender and menstrual cycle on platelet function assessed by impedance aggregometry

- Platelets are needed to prevent or arrest bleeding and aggregate at the site of injury upon vascular damage. Platelets express receptors for estrogens which might affect the function of the platelets and their hemostatic ability. The aim was to identify possible differences in platelet function related to age, gender, and phases of the menstrual cycle by use of impedance aggregometry with Multiplate. In the first part of the study, platelet function was assessed in 60 healthy individuals (30 men and 30 women) in each of three age groups (20-25, 40-45, and 60-65 years). In the second part of the study, the platelet function was analyzed on four occasions during the menstrual cycle in women without oral contraceptives (OCs) (n = 17) and compared to 19 women on OCs and 18 men of similar age (20-40 years). For the women on OCs, aggregation was analyzed once during the tablet-free week and once late during the period with OCs. The men were sampled once. Women of younger age (amp;lt;45 years) had significantly higher agonist-induced aggregation response than both men and post-menopausal women (60-65 years). The agonist-induced aggregation response did not differ between phases of the menstrual cycle or OC use. The results suggest that estradiol and/or progesterone affect spontaneous aggregation since it was found to be lowest in the mid-luteal phase. Spontaneous aggregation was significantly lower in women on OCs than in both men and women without OCs. Our findings indicate that fertile age is associated with higher aggregation response capacity of the platelets, possibly to prevent excessive bleeding during menstruation, but this response capacity is not altered during the menstrual cycle or by use of OCs.

- Flera rapporter har visat att svensk klinisk forskning under senare år har tappat mark i förhållande till omvärlden.Inom Östergötland har landstinget och den medicinska fakulteten vid Linköpings universitet (Hälsouniversitet) tagit gemensamma initiativ för att ge bättre förutsättningar för klinisk forskning kombinerat med sjukvårdsarbete. Åtgärdsplanen »FoU i befattningsutvecklingen« slår fast sjukvårdens uppdrag och roll inom klinisk forskning. Årliga FoU-bokslut görs för sjukvårdsenheterna. Projektet »Från student till docent« syftar till att rekrytera studenter från de olika utbildningarna i vård och medicin till forskning redan under studietiden och därefter ge möjligheter att bedriva forskarutbildning och fortsatt forskning kombinerat med klinisk karriär. Tidsbegränsade forskningsbefattningar inom sjukvården har inrättats för medarbetare med legitimationsyrken. Infrastrukturen kring klinisk forskning med olika typer av kompetensstöd för den enskilda forskaren har stärkts.

Development of economic forest tree breeding objectives

- The overall objective of this thesis was to suggest a framework for developing forest tree breeding objectives with particular emphasis on boreal conditions and, as components of this framework, to define breeding objectives and calculate economic weights based on two case studies of Scots pine in northern Sweden. The framework was designed to take into account boreal conditions, with long rotations, heterogeneous raw materials and a diverse production system. It is suggested that the forest products industry should be divided into subsectors, each representing a particular industrial segment. For each subsector the production system studied should consist of a vertically integrated structure, with the aim of maximising profit, and in which all costs are considered variable. In addition, appropriate objective traits should be applicable over a wide range of site conditions, silvicultural regimes and industrial subsectors. The first case study examined how to calculate the economic weight of tree survival relative to volume production, taking patchiness into account. For this purpose a new model was developed and then applied to field data in order to obtain relative economic weights for a set of Scots pine breeding populations in northern Sweden. The relative economic weight of survival varied markedly between the studied breeding populations, increasing more than three-fold with decreasing survival and increasing patchiness. The second case study defined a breeding objective for a vertically integrated company in northern Sweden, which cultivates forests and supplies its own sawmill. Results showed that a compound growth indicator (height and diameter) was a very important selection criterion, while a wood density indicator was of moderate value and vitality and straightness indicators were of negligible value. The framework can be adapted to determine economic weights appropriate for a boreal forest sector with a diverse production system and can also act as a platform to assist strategic breeding decisions when there is uncertainty within the system. Within the framework, analyses may combine several different scenarios, for which subsectors can be allocated different sizes that represent their future relative importance based on predicted supply and demand.
