  • Computation of Spherical Harmonic Representations of Source Directivity Based on the Finite-Distance Signature

    • The measurement of directivity for sound sources that are not electroacoustic transducers is fundamentally limited because the source cannot be driven with arbitrary signals. A consequence is that directivity can only be measured at a sparse set of frequencies—for example, at the stable partial oscillations of a steady tone played by a musical instrument or from the human voice. This limitation prevents the data from being used in certain applications such as time-domain room acoustic simulations where the directivity needs to be available at all frequencies in the frequency range of interest. We demonstrate in this article that imposing the signature of the directivity that is obtained at a given distance on a spherical wave allows for all interpolation that is required for obtaining a complete spherical harmonic representation of the source’s directivity, i.e., a representation that is viable at any frequency, in any direction, and at any distance. Our approach is inspired by the far-field signature of exterior sound fields. It is not capable of incorporating the phase of the directivity directly. We argue based on directivity measurement data of musical instruments that the phase of such measurement data is too unreliable or too ambiguous to be useful. We incorporate numerically-derived directivity into the example application of finite difference time domain simulation of the acoustic field, which has not been possible previously.

    • Approaches for incorporating sound source directivity into wave-based room acoustic simulations using a spherical harmonic representation have been presented recently. Normally, the directivity is measured or prescribed on a spherical surface centered at the nominal source position. In wave-based simulations, this directivity can be represented through a locally-defined driving term acting at the source location. In practice, the directivity of real-world sound sources like musical instruments or industrial machinery can only be measured approximately in terms of spatial resolution and accuracy. We show that the measurement data can be augmented such that the impairments due to the limitations of the measurement accuracy are mitigated. We revisit the previously proposed approach of only using the angle-dependent magnitude of the measured directivity together with a spherical-wave propagation model and demonstrate its potential by means of numerical simulations based on two case studies.

  • Genome-wide association study of placental weight identifies distinct and shared genetic influences between placental and fetal growth.

    • A well-functioning placenta is essential for fetal and maternal health throughout pregnancy. Using placental weight as a proxy for placental growth, we report genome-wide association analyses in the fetal (n=65,405), maternal (n=61,228) and paternal (n=52,392) genomes, yielding 40 independent association signals. Twenty-six signals are classified as fetal, four maternal and three fetal and maternal. A maternal parent-of-origin effect is seen near KCNQ1. Genetic correlation and colocalization analyses reveal overlap with birth weight genetics, but 12 loci are classified as predominantly or only affecting placental weight, with connections to placental development and morphology, and transport of antibodies and amino acids. Mendelian randomization analyses indicate that fetal genetically mediated higher placental weight is causally associated with preeclampsia risk and shorter gestational duration. Moreover, these analyses support the role of fetal insulin in regulating placental weight, providing a key link between fetal and placental growth.

    • The modeling of source directivity is a problem of longstanding interest in virtual acoustics and auralisation. This remains the case for newer time domain volumetric wave-based approaches to simulation such as the finite difference time domain method. In this article, a spatio-temporal model of acoustic wave propagation, including a source term is presented. The source is modeled as a spatial Dirac delta function under the action of a series of differential operators associated with the spherical harmonic functions. Each term in the series gives rise to the directivity pattern of a given spherical harmonic, and is separately driven through a time domain filtering operation of an underlying source signal. Such a model is suitable for calibration against measured frequency-dependent directivity patterns and a procedure for arriving at time domain filters for each spherical harmonic channel is illustrated. It also yields a convenient framework for discretisation, and a simple strategy is presented, yielding a locally-defined operation over the spatial grid. Numerical results, illustrating various features of source directivity, including the comparison of measured and synthetic directivity patterns, are presented.

  • Local Directional Source Modeling in Wave-based Acoustic Simulation

    • Time-domain wave-based simulation approaches such as the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method allow for a complete solution to the problem of virtual acoustics over the entire frequency range, in contrast with the methods of geometric acoustics which are valid in the limit of high frequencies. They also allow for flexible modelling of sources and receivers, due to the inherently local nature of the computation, and complete access to the computed acoustic field over an enclosure. In this paper, a method for the emulation of sources of arbitrary directivity is presented, framed directly as an inhomogeneous wave equation. The additional terms in the wave equation take the form of Dirac delta functions and their distributional derivatives, and collections of such terms may be associated directly with an expansion of source directivity in terms of spherical harmonics. The local nature of the model implies a locally-defined efficient computational approach for wave-based methods defined over a spatial grid. Numerical results are presented.

  • Modeling continuous source distributions in wave-based virtual acoustics

    • All acoustic sources are of finite spatial extent. In volumetric wave-based simulation approaches (including, e.g., the finite difference time domain method among many others), a direct approach is to represent such continuous source distributions in terms of a collection of point-like sources at grid locations. Such a representation requires interpolation over the grid and leads to common staircasing effects, particularly under rotation or translation of the distribution. In this article, a different representation is shown, based on a spherical harmonic representation of a given distribution. The source itself is decoupled from any particular arrangement of grid points, and is compactly represented as a series of filter responses used to drive a canonical set of source terms, each activating a given spherical harmonic directivity pattern. Such filter responses are derived for a variety of commonly encountered distributions. Simulation results are presented, illustrating various features of such a representation, including convergence, behaviour under rotation, the extension to the time varying case, and differences in computational cost relative to standard grid-based source representations.

    • The impact of many unfavorable childhood traits or diseases, such as low birth weight and mental disorders, is not limited to childhood and adolescence, as they are also associated with poor outcomes in adulthood, such as cardiovascular disease. Insight into the genetic etiology of childhood and adolescent traits and disorders may therefore provide new perspectives, not only on how to improve wellbeing during childhood, but also how to prevent later adverse outcomes. To achieve the sample sizes required for genetic research, the Early Growth Genetics (EGG) and EArly Genetics and Lifecourse Epidemiology (EAGLE) consortia were established. The majority of the participating cohorts are longitudinal population-based samples, but other cohorts with data on early childhood phenotypes are also involved. Cohorts often have a broad focus and collect(ed) data on various somatic and psychiatric traits as well as environmental factors. Genetic variants have been successfully identified for multiple traits, for example, birth weight, atopic dermatitis, childhood BMI, allergic sensitization, and pubertal growth. Furthermore, the results have shown that genetic factors also partly underlie the association with adult traits. As sample sizes are still increasing, it is expected that future analyses will identify additional variants. This, in combination with the development of innovative statistical methods, will provide detailed insight on the mechanisms underlying the transition from childhood to adult disorders.   • Revisiting the mercury cycle in marine sediments : A potential multifaceted role for Desulfobacterota

    • Marine sediments impacted by urban and industrial pollutants are typically exposed to reducing conditions and represent major reservoirs of toxic mercury species. Mercury methylation mediated by anaerobic microorganisms is favored under such conditions, yet little is known about potential microbial mechanisms for mercury detoxification. We used culture-independent (metagenomics, metabarcoding) and culture-dependent approaches in anoxic marine sediments to identify microbial indicators of mercury pollution and analyze the distribution of genes involved in mercury reduction (merA) and demethylation (merB). While none of the isolates featured merB genes, 52 isolates, predominantly affiliated with Gammaproteobacteria, were merA positive. In contrast, merA genes detected in metagenomes were assigned to different phyla, including Desulfobacterota, Actinomycetota, Gemmatimonadota, Nitrospirota, and Pseudomonadota. This indicates a widespread capacity for mercury reduction in anoxic sediment microbiomes. Notably, merA genes were predominately identified in Desulfobacterota, a phylum previously associated only with mercury methylation. Marker genes involved in the latter process (hgcAB) were also mainly assigned to Desulfobacterota, implying a potential central and multifaceted role of this phylum in the mercury cycle. Network analysis revealed that Desulfobacterota were associated with anaerobic fermenters, methanogens and sulfur-oxidizers, indicating potential interactions between key players of the carbon, sulfur and mercury cycling in anoxic marine sediments.

  • Novel loci for childhood body mass index and shared heritability with adult cardiometabolic traits.

    • The genetic background of childhood body mass index (BMI), and the extent to which the well-known associations of childhood BMI with adult diseases are explained by shared genetic factors, are largely unknown. We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of BMI in 61,111 children aged between 2 and 10 years. Twenty-five independent loci reached genome-wide significance in the combined discovery and replication analyses. Two of these, located near NEDD4L and SLC45A3, have not previously been reported in relation to either childhood or adult BMI. Positive genetic correlations of childhood BMI with birth weight and adult BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, diastolic blood pressure and type 2 diabetes were detected (Rg ranging from 0.11 to 0.76, P-values <0.002). A negative genetic correlation of childhood BMI with age at menarche was observed. Our results suggest that the biological processes underlying childhood BMI largely, but not completely, overlap with those underlying adult BMI. The well-known observational associations of BMI in childhood with cardio-metabolic diseases in adulthood may reflect partial genetic overlap, but in light of previous evidence, it is also likely that they are explained through phenotypic continuity of BMI from childhood into adulthood.
