  • Modern treatment of acute mesenteric ischaemia
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-1323 .- 1365-2168. ; 101:1, s. E100-E108
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischaemia in the early stages is now possible with modern computed tomography (CT), using intravenous contrast enhancement and imaging in the arterial and/or portal venous phase. The availability of CT around the clock means that more patients with acute mesenteric ischaemia may be treated with urgent intestinal revascularization. Methods: This was a review of modern treatment strategies for acute mesenteric ischaemia. Results: Endovascular therapy has become an important alternative, especially in patients with acute thrombotic superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion, where the occlusive lesion can be recanalized either antegradely from the femoral or brachial artery, or retrogradely from an exposed SMA after laparotomy, and stented. Aspiration embolectomy, thrombolysis and open surgical embolectomy, followed by on-table angiography, are the treatment options for embolic SMA occlusion. Endovascular therapy may be an option in the few patients with mesenteric venous thrombosis who do not respond to anticoagulation therapy. Laparotomy is needed to evaluate the extent and severity of visceral organ ischaemia, which is treated according to the principles of damage control surgery. Conclusion: Modern treatment of acute mesenteric ischaemia involves a specialized approach that considers surgical and, increasingly, endovascular options for best outcomes. Endovascular increasingly important

  • One-Year Follow-up After Open Abdomen Therapy With Vacuum-Assisted Wound Closure and Mesh-Mediated Fascial Traction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Surgery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0364-2313 .- 1432-2323. ; 37:9, s. 2031-2038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open abdomen (OA) therapy frequently results in a giant planned ventral hernia. Vacuum-assisted wound closure and mesh-mediated fascial traction (VAWCM) enables delayed primary fascial closure in most patients, even after prolonged OA treatment. Our aim was to study the incidence of hernia and abdominal wall discomfort 1 year after abdominal closure. A prospective multicenter cohort study of 111 patients undergoing OA/VAWCM was performed during 2006-2009. Surviving patients underwent clinical examination, computed tomography (CT), and chart review at 1 year. Incisional and parastomal hernias and abdominal wall symptoms were noted. The median age for the 70 surviving patients was 68 years, 77 % of whom were male. Indications for OA were visceral pathology (n = 40), vascular pathology (n = 22), or trauma (n = 8). Median length of OA therapy was 14 days. Among 64 survivors who had delayed primary fascial closure, 23 (36 %) had a clinically detectable hernia and another 19 (30 %) had hernias that were detected on CT (n = 18) or at laparotomy (n = 1). Symptomatic hernias were found in 14 (22 %), 7 of them underwent repair. The median hernia widths in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients were 7.3 and 4.8 cm, respectively (p = 0.031) with median areas of 81.0 and 42.9 cm(2), respectively (p = 0.025). Of 31 patients with a stoma, 18 (58 %) had a parastomal hernia. Parastomal hernia (odds ratio 8.9; 95 % confidence interval 1.2-68.8) was the only independent factor associated with an incisional hernia. Incisional hernia incidence 1 year after OA therapy with VAWCM was high. Most hernias were small and asymptomatic, unlike the giant planned ventral hernias of the past.

  • Anisotropy Tuning in Tetragonal FeCo Alloys
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 1533-4899. ; 10:9, s. 6186-6189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review our previous work on magnetocrystalline anisotropy tuning of superlattices based on tetragonally distorted FeCo-alloys. In addition we present new experimental results on the effect of changing the composition of the FeCo alloy. The discussion is based on the separation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy into contributions from the interfaces and strain, as well as from the composition.

  • Perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy in tetragonally distorted Fe-Co alloys
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 96:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the experimental realization of tetragonal Fe-Co alloys as a constituent of Fe(0.36)Co(0.64)/Pt superlattices with huge perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, reaching 210 mu eV/atom, and a saturation magnetization of 2.5 mu(B)/atom at 40 K, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. At room temperature the corresponding values 150 mu eV/atom and 2.2 mu(B)/atom are achieved. This suggests that Fe-Co alloys with carefully chosen combinations of composition and distortion are good candidates for high-density perpendicular storage materials.

  • Structure of Fe-Co/Pt(001) superlattices : a realization of tetragonal Fe-Co alloys
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 19:1, s. 016008-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural properties of a tetragonally distorted Fe1-xCox alloy, in the form of Fe1-xCox/Pt(001) superlattices with x = 0.64, have been investigated experimentally. The study follows recent theoretical predictions on the enhanced uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy of such alloys with specific combinations of chemical composition and tetragonal distortion. The ratio between out-of-plane and in-plane lattice parameters in the Fe0.36Co0.64 layers, c/a, was found to vary between 1.18 and 1.31, depending on the thickness ratio between the alloy and the spacer. This covered the range of interest c/a = 1.20-1.25 in the previous calculations and should be compared to c/a = 1 in the original bcc alloy lattice. Simulations of x-ray diffraction patterns as well as density functional calculations support the derivation of the Fe0.36Co0.64 lattice parameters.

  • Depth selective investigations of magnetic multilayers by X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 300:1, s. e371-e374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured and analyzed the X-ray resonant Bragg reflectivity spectra from BCC [Fe/Co]n superstructure near the L2,3 absorption edges of iron. The developed general computer code for the reflectivity calculations from arbitrary anisotropic multilayers allows us to test the different approaches to the treatment of the Bragg reflectivity spectra. We have proved that the observed asymmetry of the spectrum shape at the first-order Bragg peak for the right and left circular polarizations is predominantly caused by the magnetization of the central part of iron layers. The influence of interfaces is almost negligible. The fit of the energy dependence of the integral intensity of the Bragg reflection for the [Fe6/Co6]50 sample gives the value of the magnetic moment of Fe atoms in the central parts of Fe layers ∼2.6 μB, that is larger than the volume value.

  • Characterization of Shear-Sensitive Genes in the NormalRat Aorta Identifies Hand2 as a Major Flow-ResponsiveTranscription Factor
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Shear forces play a key role in the maintenance of vessel wall integrity. Current understanding regarding shear-dependent gene expression is mainly based on in vitro or in vivo observations with experimentally deranged shear, hence reflecting acute molecular events in relation to flow. Our objective was to determine wall shear stress (WSS) in the rat aorta and study flow-dependent vessel wall biology under physiological conditions. Methods and Results: Animal-specific aortic WSS magnitude and vector direction were estimated using computational fluid dynamic simulation based on aortic geometry and flow information acquired by MRI. Two distinct flow pattern regions were identified in the normal rat aorta; the distal part of the inner curvature being exposed to low WSS and a non-uniform vector direction, and a region along the outer curvature being subjected to markedly higher levels of WSS and a uniform vector direction. Microarray analysis revealed a strong differential expression between the flow regions, particularly associated with transcriptional regulation. In particular, several genes related to Ca2+-signalling, inflammation, proliferation and oxidative stress were among the most highly differentially expressed. Conclusions: Microarray analysis validated the CFD-defined WSS regions in the rat aorta, and several novel flow-dependent genes were identified. The importance of these genes in relation to atherosusceptibility needs further investigation.

  • A Structural Viewpoint of Magnetism in Fe and Co Based Superlattices
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In order to understand the properties of thin film devices, knowledge of the material's structure is essential. The work presented here combines magnetic and structural characterization of the systems studied to gain a deeper physical understanding. The magnetic properties have been studied with a combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, SQUID magnetometry and magneto-optical Kerr effect. For the structural characterization, x-ray reflectivity and diffraction have been used, complemented by neutron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. One structural property that affects the magnetic moment in metal-on-metal superlattices is interdiffusion between the layers. This is discussed for bcc Fe/Co(001) and bcc Fe81Ni19/Co(001) superlattices. The effect of interdiffusion was seen as a large region of enhanced magnetic moments as compared to theoretical calculations, which assume perfectly sharp interfaces. For the Fe81Ni19/Co(001) superlattices the chemical interface region, as revealed by neutron diffraction, was in good agreement with the region of magnetic enhancement. Another structural property that has been investigated is the strain in the magnetic layers. This does not affect the spin magnetic moment to a large extent. However the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the orbital moment are affected by the presence of strain. The effects on the orbital moment from strain and interfaces for Fe in Fe/V superlattices was studied, and it was found that the two contributions were separable. In this context the effect of strain on the out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy in FeCo/Pt has also been studied. The latter system is interesting from a technological perspective since tetragonally distorted FeCo alloys have the potential to be suitable new materials in computer hard drives. Finally, a computer program, based on the Differential Evolution algorithm, to refine primarily x-ray reflectivity data, is presented.

  • Element-specific magnetic moment profile in BCC Fe/Co superlattices
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 284, s. 273-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BCC Fe/Co superlattices with individual layer thicknesses in the range of 2–9 monolayers have been investigated byX-ray magnetic circular dichroism in combination with SQUID magnetometry in order to study the magnetic momentdistribution in the superlattices. The magnetic moment for Co was found to remain constant, within 0:1 mB=atom, at1:6 mB=atom for all the superlattices. The Fe atoms at the interface have an enhanced moment of about 3:0 mB=atom. Inaddition, a complex dependence of the size of the moments on the thickness of the Fe layer was found and attributed tointerface roughness effects. Element-specific hysteresis curves were also recorded. These measurements show that themagnetic moments of Fe and Co were, as expected, coupled during reversal of the magnetic moment direction.
