  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Caribbean and Sub-Saharan African Literature in Swedish Translation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Translation Studies. - 1947-4679. ; 1:1, s. 64-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper gives a quantitative overview of the publication of Caribbean and Sub-Saharan African Literature in Swedish translation during the twentieth century. The study is above all based on information taken from Swedish websites, for example Alex Dictionary of Authors and Macondo. The data collection registered 204 items written by 92 Caribbean authors from 20 countries and 719 items authored by 293 African writers from 34 countries. Most authors were published in anthologies and their works were almost exclusively translated from a former colonial language (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese). Translations of titles were generally faithful. Changes from the original could often be explained as due to differences in grammar or culture, or as a means to indicate or leave out the genre (autobiography, love story etc.), or to emphasize or tone down the geographical origin of the book.

  • Clichés français sur la Suède – étude de la réception en Suède de La délicatesse de David Foenkinos et de son adaptation cinématographique
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Synergies Pays Scandinaves. - 1901-3809. ; :7, s. 57-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
Mot-clés : réception, clichés français sur la Suède, David Foenkinos French Clichés about Sweden – A Study of the Reception in Sweden of La delicatesse de David Foenkinos and its Adaptation as a Film Summary: The French author David Foenkinos’ novel La délicatesse (Delicacy) and its subsequent film version, starring Audrey Tautou and François Damiens, frequently stereotypes Sweden and Swedes. In this article, we examine the reception in Sweden of both the Swedish translation and the movie. Since Swedish readers and film viewers have other preconceptions about what it means to be Swedish than a French audience does, it is interesting to shed light on whether Swedish critics and bloggers accept the national stereotype about themselves, or whether they reject it (and in that case how). Though some Swedish critics appreciate the way that Foenkinos chose to portray the male protagonist as a depressive, clumsy Swede, many reviewers fail to understand why such an unflattering portrayal of their country should be funny. They also question why a relationship between two people who at first sight do not seem to have much in common (an elegant French woman and an unattractive Swedish man) should be so controversial. Moreover, many blog Reviews do not mention the Swedish element of the story at all. Although this might not be all that surprising, given that the main function of the Swedish theme is to increase the differences between the lead characters, Swedish readers and filmgoers are nevertheless interested in learning more about why the author used these allegedly inaccurate clichés. Key words: reception, French stereotypes of Sweden, David Foenkinos

  • Entre écriture translingue et autotraduction – Greta Knutson (1899–1983) et sa recherche d’un public en langues française et allemande
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Revue nordique des études francophones. - : Stockholm University Press. - 2003-0401. ; 5:1, s. 109-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the use of self-translation by Greta Knutson (1899–1983), aSwedish-born painter, art critic and writer, who lived most of her life in France. AlthoughKnutson wrote mainly in French, towards the end of her life she started self-translatingher texts into German. She also occasionally self-translated in the opposite direction.Three perspectives were applied to her texts, which were published in journals and/orin two monographs in German (Bestien, 1980, 1982) and French (Lunaires, 1985). First,an attempt was made to establish a chronology of her self-translated writings; second, the visibility of the “self-translation pact” (Ferraro 2016) was examined according totarget culture and genre; and third, the degree of rewriting was studied by means of a three-level categorization. Ultimately, it was not possible to establish a reliablechronology of her self-translated texts, mainly due to the lack of dated texts. The “selftranslation pact” was clearly signaled in the German monograph only. Accordingly, itwas suggested that Knutson was launched, in 1980, as a writer closely connected tothe German target culture, in 1982, as a foreign author of French-Swedish origin, and in1985, as a French author. The degree of rewriting varied, but few texts showed a highrate of rewriting compared to the version(s) in the other language. It was also noted thatself-translation rarely influenced revisions in French texts which were published twice. The paper includes a list with Knutson’s literary publications in French and German, aswell as an inventory of her German texts and, when relevant, their counterparts in French.
