  • Material Inventories and Garment Ontologies : Advancing Upcycling Methods in Fashion Practice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study seeks to advance upcycling methods in fashion practice with the specificity of design methods that centre on revaluation and resignification of waste materials. The development of three key approaches to upcycling were tested for future application as design briefs and pedagogies in practice and education. These were developed through the acquisition, sorting and selection of a large sample of secondhand, consumer waste materials across fashion and textiles sectors. Practice-based experiments and the use of different forms of photo documentation examined and explored distinct ways to creatively understand waste material properties, conditions and potential. Fashion and material studies frameworks of object biographies, wardrobe studies, waste, secondhand material economies and art practice approaches of reclaimed materials expanded and refined the approaches. “Material Inventories” is proposed as a creative and analytical method to identify, sort and annotate pre- and post-consumer waste materials. “Garment ontologies” delineates how traditionally “design” in fashion practice is separate from materials and production. These methods enable a deeper investigation into material qualities, conditions, and reuse potential for extended life cycles. This experimental study presents novel and relevant findings with a compelling material sample and practice-based methods adjacent to scholarship in this area that are predominately theoretical- or case study-based.

  • Material Inventories for Responsive Design in Fashion Practice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: State-of-the-Art Upcycling Research and Practice. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. ; , s. 47-53
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research proposes design methods for reuse and upcycling of post-consumer waste materials as an integral part of responsive design approaches for fashion design practice. The study seeks to overcome institutional barriers that limit potential applications of upcycling practices and how post-consumer waste materials can be included in fashion design curriculum and pedagogy. The findings reveal the need for a variety of design methods for upcycling to be embedded throughout education programmes from Bachelor to Master’s levels. The research suggests that academic institutions need to create a variety of assessment frameworks, foundational courses, learning activities and experiences that scaffold engaged uses and understanding of materials and diverse contexts and conditions.

  • Effects of deep cervical flexor training on impaired physiological functions associated with chronic neck pain: a systematic review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - London : BMC. - 1471-2474. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:Neck pain is a major health issue with high rates of recurrence. It presents with a variety ofaltered sensorimotor functions. Exercise is a cornerstone of rehabilitation and many training methods areused. Exercise is evaluated in most randomized controlled trials on its pain relieving effects. No review hasassessed the effect of exercise on the altered physiological functions or determined if there are differentialeffects of particular training methods. This review investigated the effects of deep cervical flexor (DCF)training, a training method commonly used for patients with neck pain, and compared it to other trainingmethodsornotrainingonoutcomesofcervicalneuromuscular function, muscle size, kinematics and kinetics. Methods:Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, PubMed were searched from inception until January 2018. Twelverandomized controlled trials were included that compared DCF training as sole intervention to other trainingor no interventions in persons with neck pain. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used to assess the methodquality. All outcome measures were analysed descriptively and meta-analyses were performed for measuresevaluated in three or more studies. Results:DCF training was compared to cervical endurance, strength, proprioception and mobility training, muscle stretching, and no intervention control groups. Physiological outcome measures includedneuromuscular co-ordination (craniocervical flexion test), functional tasks, muscle fatigability, muscle size, kinematics (joint position sense, posture and range of motion) and kinetics (strength, endurance andcontraction accuracy). Strong evidence was found for effectiveness of DCF training on neuromuscularcoordination, but it had no or small effects on strength and endurance at higher loads. DCF trainingimproved head and cervical posture, while evidence was limited or contradictory for other measures. Conclusions:DCF training can successfully address impaired neuromuscular coordination, but not cervicalflexor strength and endurance at higher contraction intensities. A multimodal training regime is proposedwhen the aim is to specifically address various impaired physiological functions associated with neck pain

  • Venous hemodynamic changes in lower limb venous disease : the UIP consensus according to scientific evidence
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Angiology. - : Springer. - 0392-9590 .- 1827-1839. ; 35:3, s. 236-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are excellent guidelines for clinicians to manage venous diseases but few reviews to assess their hemodynamic background. Hemodynamic concepts that evolved in the past have largely remained unchallenged in recent decades, perhaps due to their often complicated nature and in part due to emergence of new diagnostic techniques. Duplex ultrasound scanning and other imaging techniques which evolved in the latter part of the 20th century have dominated investigation. They have greatly improved our understanding of the anatomical patterns of venous reflux and obstruction. However, they do not provide the physiological basis for understanding the hemodynamics of flow, pressure, compliance and resistance. Hemodynamic investigations appear to provide a better correlation with post-treatment clinical outcome and quality of life than ultrasound findings. There is a far better prospect for understanding the complete picture of the patient's disability and response to management by combining ultrasound with hemodynamic studies. Accordingly, at the instigation of Dr Angelo Scuderi, the Union Internationale de Phlebologie (UIP) executive board commissioned a large number of experts to assess all aspects of management for venous disease by evidence-based principles. These included experts from various member societies including the European Venous Forum (EVF), American Venous Forum (AVF), American College of Phlebology (ACP) and Cardiovascular Disease Educational and Research Trust (CDERT). Their aim was to confirm or dispel long-held hemodynamic principles and to provide a comprehensive review of venous hemodynamic concepts underlying the pathophysiology of lower limb venous disorders, their usefulness for investigating patients and the relevant hemodynamic changes associated with various forms of treatment. Chapter 1 is devoted to basic hemodynamic concepts and normal venous physiology. Chapter 2 presents the mechanism and magnitude of hemodynamic changes in acute deep vein thrombosis indicating their pathophysiological and clinical significance. Chapter 3 describes the hemodynamic changes that occur in different classes of chronic venous disease and their relation to the anatomic extent of disease in the macrocirculation and microcirculation. The next four chapters (Chapters 4-7) describe the hemodynamic changes resulting from treatment by compression using different materials, intermittent compression devices, pharmacological agents and finally surgical or endovenous ablation. Chapter 8 discusses the unique hemodynamic features associated with alternative treatment techniques used by the CHIVA and ASVAL. Chapter 9 describes the hemodynamic effects following treatment to relieve pelvic reflux and obstruction. Finally, Chapter 10 demonstrates that contrary to general belief there is a moderate to good correlation between certain hemodynamic measurements and clinical severity of chronic venous disease. The authors believe that this document will be a timely asset to both clinicians and researchers alike. It is directed towards surgeons and physicians who are anxious to incorporate the conclusions of research into their daily practice. It is also directed to postgraduate trainees, vascular technologists and bioengineers, particularly to help them understand the hemodynamic background to pathophysiology, investigations and treatment of patients with venous disorders. Hopefully it will be a platform for those who would like to embark on new research in the field of venous disease.
