Reportaget som berättelse : En narratologisk undersökning av reportagegenren

- This study is the first dissertation where the genre of reportage (in the U.S. classified as literary journalism) is systematically mapped with the help of narratology. Using tools primarily from structural discourse narratology, the thesis examines, describes and maps written reportages as narratives. Rhetorical and cognitive narratology complement the approach. The investigation rests on two assumptions. Firstly, a reporter’s professional purpose is to report about people and states of affairs outside the reporter herself. This results in a contextual commitment, which leaves traces in the narrative in the form of a textual commitment. The latter is in turn divided into narrative empathy and narrative compassion/sympathy. The thesis highlights the creation of narrative structures and stylistic features in reportages and the overall conclusion is that conceptions about a reporter’s professional purpose in fact do influence the narrativity of the text. Secondly, in contrast to news journalism, reportage is a personal genre that can be considered a directed reality: the content is taken from reality but the form is personal and a consequence of the writing reporter’s choices. The thesis presents a narratological model where the text develops in the interplay between three instances: a director, a narrator (in a first-person reportage a narrating reporter) and experiencing characters (in a first-person reportage including an experiencing reporter). The director should be regarded as a structuring property of the text itself. Part 1 provides a historical background to the reportage genre and the social side of the reporter role. In part 2, narrative characteristics of the genre are explored and defined together with the common roots of reportage and novels within realism and naturalism. Part 3 demonstrates how a contextual commitment can be transformed into a textual commitment. Throughout the dissertation, the director model is used to investigate differences and similarities between subcategories within the genre, sometimes between single texts, sometimes between reportage in general and fictional narrative. In part 4, a typology of reportage is presented. The genre is divided into five types of narration, based on the representational relation between how the physical reporter has collected information and in what ways an experiencing reporter is or is not apparent in the text. The thesis ends with a historicization of consonance and dissonance within the reportage genre. Consonance emphasizes the characters’ “here-and-now” and can be found within a broad, classical tradition of eyewitness reporting. Dissonance emphasizes the narrator’s retrospective perspective and can be found within the modernistic type of American New Journalism and in more experimentally written reportages from the most recent decades. The thesis demonstrates how both these ways of narrating may enable the reader’s narrative empathy with someone else than the experiencing reporter.The analyses and conclusions are mainly based on Swedish reportages from 1819 to 2014. This material is complemented with international reportages from 1903 to 2007, from Norway, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Bohemia, Croatia, Belarus and the U.S. Accordingly, the dissertation demonstrates that traditions of reportage are primarily international and that the observations about narrative patterns within the genre are also relevant outside of Sweden.

- Helgo Zettervall (1831–1907) was one of Sweden’s principal architects and design talents. He was professionally active for 40 years, from the late 1850s to the mid-1890s – a period of intensive building activity in Sweden. For the first twenty years of his career, he had his practice in Lund, and in the subsequent twenty years he lived in Stockholm as head of Sweden’s state authority for public buildings. Zettervall was very productive. His portfolio contains 281 projects, of which 160 were executed, ranging from large cathedral restorations with thousands of detailed drawings and large public buildings to porch extensions and smaller residences.This dissertation highlights Zettervall’s works by putting them in a context and by analysing their qualitative aspects. Carried out as a historiographical case study, the framework for the dissertation is the architectural monograph. The individual architectural projects are the core of the presentation, assembling and making archive material readily accessible, and the method is leaning towards that of an oeuvre complète raisonné. The method includes three distinct approaches: a factual accounting of documents and drawings, a context-setting frame story that provides the conditions, and an architectural analysis.Zettervall belonged to the first generation of architects who could receive a well-planned and broad training in Sweden. All of this training took place against a backdrop of what a specific assignment demanded in terms of responsiveness and understanding. Zettervall developed a special talent for utilizing new construction methods and materials. Each assignment was a challenge to investigate new design principles and new spatial ideas. The investigation shows that every project was unique for Zettervall, and that his various solutions depended on the specific situation, regarding site and program. Zettervall was a distinct pragmatic. Every assignment had its unique conditions, and thus had a unique solution.

Under decennierna efter andra världskriget efterfrågades Bysans i skilda svenskspråkiga sammanhang. I tiden låg en ny rörlighet och Grekland var det nya turistlandet. I Bruken av Bysans studeras reseskildringar från klosterhalvön Athos, Bysans plats i litteraturhistorieskrivningen, mottagandet av Gunnar Ekelöfs Diwantrilogi, modern lyrik av Östen Sjöstrand och Ella Hillbäck, Alf Henriksons bysantinska anekdoter, Tito Collianders memoarer och karelsk exotism. Ett kapitel tar upp hur de ortodoxt kristna församlingarna i Stockholm började använda svenska som liturgiskt språk inom den bysantinska traditionen. Perspektivet är kultursemiotiskt. Särskilt uppmärksammas Bysans karaktär av gränsområde, resenärernas kunskapssyn samt förmedlingen av realia och litterära texter.

- This article discusses the notion of Byzantium and Byzantium’s potential capacities as a multifaceted borderland, as shaped and perceived in Julia Kristeva’s novel Murder in Byzantium. In spite of its title, this is not a historical, but rather a so-called total novel, which reconciles several different plots – romantic, criminal, political and philosophical. It relies on both fictive and historical texts, especially on The Alexiad, written in the 12th century by the Byzantine princess and the first female historian ever, Anna Comnena. Through a literary analysis, this article shows how Byzantium is shaped in the novel by transgressions of the borders of narration, identity, space and time. Byzantium is thus of great interest to the general public and an academic discussion of borders, origin, history and culture, so important for the discussion of Europe’s role today in – or, as suggested in the novel, perhaps between – Eastern and Western cultures.

- Gunnar Ekelöf (1907-68) återvände om och om igen till sin egen tidiga diktning. 1962 gav han ut sin första diktsamling sent på jorden (1932) tillsammans med andra opublicerade dikter från samma tid i ett Appendix 1962. I volymen ingick även ett tidigare opublicerat ”regihäfte” för fragment av abstrakt teater, kallat En natt vid horisonten 1930-32. Syftet här är att särskilt belysa och diskutera betydelsen av de olika ”byzantinska inslag” som enligt Ekelöf kännetecknar den scen där En natt vid horisonten framförs.Utgångspunkten för Ekelöfs återupptagna arbete med En natt vid horisonten är det bysantinska kyrkorummets likhet med teaterscenen och detta rums möjligheter till olika perspektiviska system. I hans nyskrivna inledning från 1962 förläggs den tänkta scenen till despotens av Épiros teater i Árta, som dateras till sent 1500- eller tidigt 1600-tal, och som är ”inbyggd i den forna ikonostasen” i ett tidigare ”huskapell för någon despotissa”. Fragment av den bysantinska inredningen har bevarats där, och mycket av dekorationen är gjord enligt det bysantinska omvända perspektivet. Men samtidigt är teatern utformad i ”Serlios abstrakta anda” och liknar Theatro Olimpico i Vicenza. Ekelöf betonar att teatern är ”en förvirrande blandning av för tiden gammalt och nytt” och att ”både öst och väst” möts här. Hur kommer det sig och vad innebär det att Ekelöf i slutet av sitt liv väljer att förlägga sin ungdoms abstrakta teater till en scen som tidigare varit ett bysantinskt kapell? Vilka samband mellan abstrakt teater, modern poesi och bysantinsk liturgi använder sig Ekelöf av här?Det är tydligt att Ekelöf själv uppfattade volymen från 1962 som en slutpunkt. I sina avslutande noter framhåller han att hela hans konstuppfattning är ”att återvända till ursprunget, att börja om och börja om. Ormen biter sig i stjärten. Cirkeln är sluten. Jag skriver inte mera ’poesi’.” Nu blev det ändå inte så, eftersom han kom att skriva ytterligare tre diktsamlingar, Dīwān över Fursten av Emgión(1965), Sagan om Fatumeh (1966) och Vägvisare till underjorden (1967), där inte minst den bysantinska traditionen och estetiken fortsätter vara produktiv. Hur binder de bysantinska inslagen i En natt vid horisonten samman Ekelöfs tidigare och senare dikter?En natt vid horisonten har tidigare studerats av främst Reidar Ekner, Anders Olsson, Conradin Perner och Brita Wigforss. På senare tid har även det bysantinska i Ekelöfs poesi studerats ingående av bland andra Anette Fryd, Ulf Thomas Moberg, Elena Oxenstierna och undertecknad. Mot bakgrund av denna tidigare forskning och i gränslandet mellan poesi, dramatik och konst är det också intressant att undersöka hur det omvända perspektivet, som traditionellt används i bysantinska kyrkorum och ortodox ikonkonst, och som förekommer i flera av Ekelöfs dikter, fungerar i texten till En natt vid horisonten.
