- Remote sensing is an efficient tool for mapping, monitoring, and assessing forest damage and the risk of damage. This report presents ongoing research on those topics with preliminary results as well as research planned by the Department of Forest Resource Management, SLU in Umeå, in the near future. The damage types include spruce bark beetle attacks, storm damage, and forest fire. The report also outlines proposed continued research in the area and possible collaborations within and outside SLU.

- The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the occurrence of Enlightenment ideas in the central Northern part of Sweden during the 18th century, focussing on a carefully chosen set of characters: one bishop and three senior lecturers at the gymnasium of Härnösand, in the province of Ångermanland. This dissertation uses a perspective of circulation of knowledge, inspired by the research field of history of knowledge. The methodological approach in this study is to use a complex thematic definition with eight different components of Enlightenment in the analysis of relevant texts and writings by selected characters, supplemented with a contextual perspective.A center for the ecclesiastical culture of learning in Norrland was Härnösand, and the gymnasium was Norrland´s only higher education institution, north of Gävle, for 200 years between 1650 and 1850. During the 18th century, three senior lecturers were employed there, each working for the dissemination of Enlightenment ideas, through both writing and practical action: Magnus Stridsberg (1696–1772), Nils Gissler (1715–1771) and Pehr Hellzén (1744–1811). At the same time as these, the diocese was governed by Bishop Olof Kiörning (1704–1778), who was also the Supervisor of the gymnasium. He was influenced by Enlightenment ideas and showed a strong interest in advanced agriculture and contributed to the church taking greater part in the social and economic development. The first lecturer, Magnus Stridsberg, created new methods in agriculture concerning soil mixing, manure production and grain nurseries, but has mainly been remembered for his threshing machine which came into general use in central Norrland during the second half of the 18th century. The next lecturer, Nils Gissler, was Norrland´s first provincial physician and introduced a scientific approach to practical medicine in the region. With the dissemination of knowledge and a great deal of personal commitment, he showed interest in mental illness and treated his patients in his own home. He laid the foundation for an infrastructure for public health care in the province. He was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and wrote many scientific papers, and in modern times has received international scientific recognition for the discovery of the inverted barometer effect. The third lecturer, Pehr Hellzén, was a pre-industrial contractor in the sawmill and shipbuilding industry in central Norrland and founded the shipyard and shipping company Wifstavarf in 1798. Hellzén gave an important inaugural speech when the new gymnasium was built: Om uplysningens verkan på människors och samhällens sällhet (On the effect of Enlightenment on the happiness of people and societies), printed in Swedish 1794. He gave Härnösand a special role within the Enlightenment, described as a driving force behind the development of science, education and economic in the region.The Enlightenment that developed in Härnösand can be summarized as a Christian ‘utilism’ with clear Enlightenment traits such as reason, experience-based science, the dissemination of knowledge, humanity, social reforms, religious tolerance & religion of reason, and utility & virtue. It rested on an evangelical Lutheran foundation, it regarded the meaning of ‘utilism’ in a broader sense than just financial gain, and included central Enlightenment ideas.

Optical soot characterization using two-color laser-induced incandescence (2C-LII) in the soot growth region of a premixed flat flame

- The soot growth region of a premixed one-dimensional ethylene/air flame has been investigated using two-color laser-induced incandescence (2C-LII) with focus on optical soot properties. From the 2C-LII technique, primary soot particle sizes were deduced together with the temperature from pyrometry of the laser-heated particles, while the gas temperatures were obtained from pure rotational CARS nitrogen thermometry. Soot particle sizes were also measured from thermophoretically sampled soot particles analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the results showed growing isolated primary soot particles up to a height of 10 mm, after which strong soot aggregation occurred and the increase in soot primary particle size ceased. The measured data was used in the evaluation of the soot absorption function, E(m), and a strong increase by a factor of two was observed from the lowest heights to the highest for assumed constant values of soot density and specific heat at all heights. By comparing the 2C-LII particle sizes with the sizes obtained from TEM, differences were observed. Part of the explanation is that the 2C-LII evaluation did not take aggregation into account, but it is additionally speculated that the thermal accommodation coefficient decreases with height above burner. These results are interesting in view of morphological and composition changes of the soot during the growth process and have implications for the use of 2C-LII as a soot diagnostic technique. Att välja energisystem : Processer, aktörer och samverkan i Helsingborg och Gävle 1945–1983

- The Swedish municipalities have traditionally, as suppliers of gas, electricity and district heating to end-use consumers, been one of the key actors of national energy politics. Yet, although Swedish district heating systems typically are owned by the public, neither electricity nor heat production is always under public control. This has historically imposed limitations on municipal plans for own CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plants and district heating systems. Previous research in the field have established that an organisational division between companies active in either heat or electricity supply was one of the most serious challenges for municipal engagement in energy affairs after WW2. Yet, in many cases municipal energy departments have engaged in joint cooperation projects with process industries and power companies, in order to utilize technical expertise and industrial waste heat for the build-up of the local energy system. Processes of initiating, developing and maintaining such cooperation projects - and the erection of municipal CHP plats - are focused upon here.The purpose of this research project is to describe and analyse the roles played by two municipalities (Helsingborg and Gävle) in the years 1945-1983. The specific research questions were as follows: How were different socio-technical systems for electricity and heat supply introduced and how were different alternatives received within the frames of the municipal organisations? What was the impact of competition between different alternatives on the development of the local energy systems? It shows that strategies for municipal-industrial cooperation are vital for the possibilities of municipal energy companies to come to terms with the organisational gulf between power and heat companies. It is argued that the forming of strategical alliances can illustrate how municipal organisations not always act in autonomous positions. It can rather be the other way round - it is strategies for cooperation and competition that make the municipality a key actor in the local energy system.

- The concept of Bildung, sometimes translated as self-cultivation, is at the core of an influential tradition of educational thought. What is the relation between Bildung and interculturality? Drawing on Wilhelm von Humboldt and Hans-Georg Gadamer, and on so-called transformative learning theory, Bildung is interpreted as a process of transforming one’s meaning perspective in encounters with others. A meaning perspective is a set of largely implicit presuppositions underlying one’s habitual ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. Confrontation with alternative perspectives can be an opportunity to become aware of one’s own perspective, to critically assess it and to transform it. Thus conceived, Bildung is closely related to interculturality.
