  • From Physical to Virtual : Widening the Perspective on Multi-Agent Environments
  • 2015. - 1
  • Ingår i: Agent Environments for Multi-Agent Systems IV. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319238500 - 9783319238494 ; , s. 133-146
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since more than a decade, the environment is seen as a key element when analyzing, developing or deploying Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) applications. Especially, for the development of multi-agent platforms, it has become a key concept, similarly to many application in the area of location-based, distributed systems. An emerging, prominent application area for MAS is related to Virtual Environments. The underlying technology has evolved in a way, that these applications have grown out of science fiction novels till research papers and even real applications. Even more, current technologies enable MAS to be key components of such virtual environments. In this paper, we widen the concept of the environment of a MAS to encompass new and mixed physical, virtual, simulated, etc. forms of environments. We analyze currently most interesting application domains based on three dimensions: the way different "realities" are mixed via the environment, the underlying natures of agents, the possible forms and sophistication of interactions. In addition to this characterization, we discuss how this widened concept of possible environments influences the support it can give for developing applications in the respective domains.

  • Governance of autonomous agents on the web : challenges and opportunities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Internet Technology. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1533-5399 .- 1557-6051. ; 22:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of autonomous agents has a long tradition in the Multiagent Systems and the Semantic Web communities, with applications ranging from automating business processes to personal assistants. More recently, the Web of Things (WoT), which is an extension of the Internet of Things (IoT) with metadata expressed in Web standards, and its community provide further motivation for pushing the autonomous agents research agenda forward. Although representing and reasoning about norms, policies and preferences is crucial to ensuring that autonomous agents act in a manner that satisfies stakeholder requirements, normative concepts, policies and preferences have yet to be considered as first-class abstractions in Web-based multiagent systems. Towards this end, this paper motivates the need for alignment and joint research across the Multiagent Systems, Semantic Web, and WoT communities, introduces a conceptual framework for governance of autonomous agents on the Web, and identifies several research challenges and opportunities.

  • Norms and Policies for Agents on the Web
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Autonomous Agents on the Web Dagstuhl (Dagstuhl Seminar 21072). - Germany : Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik, Dagstuhl Publishing. ; , s. 88-98
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The study of policies and norms has a long tradition in the Semantic Web & Linked Data and Multi-Agent Systems communities, with applications ranging from business processes, and legal reasoning, to information systems governance. Although representing and reasoning about norms is crucial in ensuring that autonomous agents act in a manner to satisfy stake- holder requirements, normative concepts have yet to be considered as first-class abstractions in Web-based software systems. The chapter motivates the practical need to apply research on policies and norms to autonomous agents on the Web, and highlights research challenges and opportunities at the intersection of the Semantic Web & Linked Data, Multi-Agent Systems, and Web Architecture & Web of Things communities.

  • A Cyber-Physical System for Semi-autonomous Oil & Gas Drilling Operations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 Third IEEE International Conference on Robotic Computing (IRC). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781538692455 ; , s. 514-519
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Oil&Gas drilling operations and after reaching deep drilled depths, high temperature increases significantly enough to damage the down-hole drilling tools, and the existing mitigation process is insufficient. In this paper, we propose a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) where agents are used to represent the collaborating entities in Oil\&Gas fields both up-hole and down-hole. With the proposed CPS, down-hole tools respond to high temperature autonomously with a decentralized collective voting based on the tools' internal decision model while waiting for the cooling performed up-hole by the field engineer. This decision model, driven by the tools' specifications, aims to withstand high temperature. The proposed CPS is implemented using a multiagent simulation environment, and the results show that it mitigates high temperature properly with both the voting and the cooling mechanisms.

  • Towards a Real-time Mitigation of High Temperature while Drilling using a Multi-agent System
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 1st International Workshop on Real-Time Compliant Multi-Agent Systems, RTcMAS 2018. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 77-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In oilfield wells, while drilling for several kilometers below surface, high temperature damages the drilling tools. This costs money and time for tripping operations to change the damaged tool. Existing temperature mitigation techniques have several drawbacks including a long response time, analogue signal issues and human intervention. In this work, we empower the down-hole tools with a coordination mechanism to mitigate high temperature in soft real time by controlling a down-hole actuator through a voting process. The tools are represented by agents that control the sensors and actuators embedded in these tools. To implement the proposed system properly, a model of the drilling domain is constructed with all drilling mechanics and parameters, along with the well trajectory and temperature equations taken into consideration. The proposed model is implemented and tested using AgentOil, a multi-agent-based simulation tool, and the results are evaluated. Furthermore, the requirements of a real-time temperature mitigation system for Oil&Gas drilling operations are identified and the constraints of such systems are analyzed.

  • Négociation multi-agents résistante aux pics de charge pour améliorer l’acceptabilité des services d’un fournisseur SaaS ouvert
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Revue d'intelligence artificielle. - : Lavoisier. - 0992-499X .- 1958-5748. ; 32:5-6, s. 603-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Agent Environments for Multi-agent Systems : A Research Roadmap
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Agent Environments for Multi-Agent Systems IV. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319238500 - 9783319238494 ; , s. 3-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ten years ago, researchers in multi-agent systems became more and more aware that agent systems consist of more than only agents. The series of workshops on Environments for Multi-Agent Systems (E4MAS 2004-2006) emerged from this awareness. One of the primary outcomes of this endeavor was a principled understanding that the agent environment should be considered as a primary design abstraction, equally important as the agents. A special issue in JAAMAS 2007 contributed a set of influential papers that define the role of agent environments, describe their engineering, and outline challenges in the field that have been the drivers for numerous follow up research efforts. The goal of this paper is to wrap up what has been achieved in the past 10 years and identify challenges for future research on agent environments. Instead of taking a broad perspective, we focus on three particularly relevant topics of modern software intensive systems: large scale, openness, and humans in the loop. For each topic, we reflect on the challenges outlined 10 years ago, present an example application that highlights the current trends, and from that outline challenges for the future. We conclude with a roadmap on how the different challenges could be tackled.
