  • A Dual Purpose battery Charger for Electric Vehicles
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: PESC 98 Conference Proceedings. ; , s. 565-570
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedA dual purpose, high power, off board battery charger for electric vehicles is presented. For higher viability and increased usage of the charger, grid conditioning capabilities are included in the concept. Conventional power electronic converter topologies are used in a new application, which combines fast EV battery charging with active filtering. Furthermore bi-directional power flow capabilities are provided to accommodate grid peak power requirements. Both simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper which demonstrate the capabilities of the new charger.

  • Multiple Rotating Integrator Controller for Active Filters
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: EPE 99 Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedA controller scheme based on multiple rotating integrators (MRI) for an active filter is presented, analysed and evaluated. The inherent performance of integrators in the synchronous reference dq-frame for reduction of steady state errors are used in multiple rotating reference frames in order to compensate harmonics to obtain a steady state error equal to zero. Both measurements and simulations clearly verify the advantageous performance in comparison to presently used active filters. Particularly in experimental verification, the MRI controller structure outperforms the alternative methods due to its low sensitivity to parameter variation and non linear properties of the system. This is particularly important since the superiority of the MRI structure is not fully revealed only by simulation. It is shown that the MRI structure do suppress harmonics to the measurement noise level.

  • Design and Implementation of a Quasi-Resonant DC Link Converter
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: EPE 2001 Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a passively clamped quasi-resonant DC link converter is analysed, implemented and evaluated in a battery charger application. Design expressions for selection of passive component values, based mainly on the specified maximum output voltage derivative and the duration of the zero voltage interval, are given. Design of the inductive components and selection of appropriate power semiconductors for the quasi-resonant DC link are investigated. The main problems regarding power electronic design of these components are also discussed. The quasi-resonant DC link waveforms are measured and the converter efficiency is measured and compared to a hard switched case.

  • Efficiency of Off-Board, High Power, Electric Vehicle Battery Chargers with Active Power line Conditioning Capabilities
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: EPE 97 Conference Proceedings. ; , s. 4688-4692
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedA comparison is made of battery charger topologies for electric vehicles. The chargers are all off-board, and capable of active power line conditioning and bi-directional power flow to compensate local utilities during peak power loads. The active power line conditioning capability is important, since an increase of battery chargers based on ordinary diode rectifiers would increase the low order harmonic content in grid currents. The battery chargers studied are one hard switched with a voltage-stiff dc link, and three soft switched with quasi-resonant dc links. Performance characteristics and energy conversion efficiency were evaluated from simulations. Indeed, the results imply that quasi resonant topologies have higher efficiency than hard switched. The drawback with the soft switched dc links studied is the additional components, active and passive, needed for quasi-resonant operation. In battery charger applications, where high power efficiency is of prime interest, quasi-resonant topologies should be chosen.

  • Zero Voltage Switching Converters
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: NORPIE 2000 Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper zero voltage switching converters are investigated. The investigation starts by discussing the RCD charge-discharge snubber. The concept of resonant and quasi-resonant DC link converters is discussed. One of the most promising quasi-resonant DC links reported in the literature is implemented and tested in a battery charger application. Simulated resonant link voltage and current waveforms are analysed. IGBT switching waveforms under zero voltage conditions are investigated. Measured waveforms are shown and the converter and the overall battery charger efficiency are measured.
