    • For several decades, occupational therapy researchers have collected data about clients’ role performance with the Role Checklist, a widely used assessment tool, which collects self-reported information about clients’ roles. The Role Checklist includes two parts; Part 1 gathers data about role incumbency and Part 2 gathers data about role value. In 2008, Part 3 for the Role Checklist was developed to address occupational role performance, specifically prompting clients to rank the quality of their current role performance compared to their highest prior level. This reflects the client perspective of occupational participation corresponding to the performance capacity component of MOHO; thus establishing the Role Checklist Version Two: Quality of Performance (RC V2: QP).This paper illustrates by a case example how a therapist used the recently translated RC V2: QP in a psychiatric hospital setting in Norway in order to determine the extent to which the RC V2: QP supports the goal setting process as well as the therapist-client experience to verify subjective feasibility. It was reported that use of this instrument to guide the clinical interview was a positive experience for both the client and the therapist. The client had an opportunity to reflect upon his roles and how he would like to change them. The occupational therapist experienced that the interdisciplinary team working with this patient gradually developed a more comprehensive understanding of the patient’s challenges and resources. The RC V2: QP provided a basic set of information about the patient’s roles that was useful for setting treatment goals.

  • Does the Role Checklist Measure Occupational Participation?

    • Background: Among the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) assessments, the Role Checklist is one of the most established. In spite of its widespread use, no studies have examined role examples and their association with the three embedded levels of doing, as established in the MOHO theory.Method: A cross-sectional survey of 293 respondents from the US, the UK, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway produced 7,182 role examples. The respondents completed Part I of the Role Checklist and provided examples of each internalized role they performed. Responses were classified as occupational skill, occupational performance, or occupational participation.Results: Thirty-three percent of the examples were classified as examples of occupational participation, whereas 65% were classified as examples of occupational performance. Four roles linked mostly with occupational participation, another four roles linked mostly with occupational performance, and the two remaining roles were mixed between occupational participation and occupational performance.Discussion: The Role Checklist assesses a person’s involvement in internalized roles at the level of both occupational participation and occupational performance. There are differences among countries with regard to how roles are perceived and exemplified, and different roles relate differently to the occupational performance and occupational participation levels of doing. There are related implications for occupational therapists

  • Rasch Analysis of the Norwegian Version of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire in a Sample of Occupational Therapy Students

    • Background. Recently, the Occupational Balance Questionnaire developed in Sweden was translated into Norwegian. No studies to date have examined the measurement properties of the Norwegian version of this questionnaire. Aim. The study is aimed at examining the psychometric properties of the Norwegian version of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire, the OBQ11-N. Methods. Along with sociodemographic data, 180 occupational therapy students enrolled at two Norwegian universities completed the OBQ11-N as well as one question each related to health and quality of life and some sociodemographic variables. Rasch analysis was employed for examining rating scale functioning, item and person validity, dimensionality, and differential item functioning. Results. Item categories were ordered, but there were potential gaps in the measurement of the construct. Person reliability was fair, whereas item reliability was low. Point biserial correlations were positive, indicating that all items contributed to the construct. Factor loadings were low for two items, and there were indices of a second underlying dimension and item redundancy. Many people were not aligned with the items, and some items functioned differently across various demographic variables. Conclusion and Significance. The OBQ11-N did not function as an adequate measure of occupational balance in a sample of students. Potentially, the detected measurement problems may be solved by adding more relevant items to a larger item pool, from which the best fitting items should be selected.

  • Validation of a short version of the Lee fatigue scale in adults living in Norway : a cross-sectional population survey

    • BACKGROUND: Due to the nature of fatigue, a brief reliable measure of fatigue severity is needed. Thus, the aim of our study was to evaluate a short version of the Lee Fatigue Scale (LFS) in the Norwegian general population.METHODS: This cross-sectional survey consists of a representative sample from the Norwegian population drawn by The National Population Register in Norway. The study is part of a larger study (NORPOP) aimed at collecting normative data from several questionnaires focused on health in adults living in Norway. Registered citizens between 18 and 94 years of age were randomly selected stratified by age, sex and geographic region. Of the 4971 respondents eligible for the study, 1792 (36%) responded to the survey. In addition to age and sex, we collected responses on a 5-item version of the LFS measuring current fatige severity. The psychometric properties focusing on internal structure and precision of the LFS items were analyzed by a Rasch rating scale model.RESULTS: Complete LFS scores for analyses were available for 1767 adults. Women had higher LFS-scores than men, and adults < 55 years old had higher scores than older respondents. Our analysis of the LFS showed that the average category on each item advanced monotonically. Two of the five items demonstrated misfit, while the three other items demonstrated goodness-of-fit to the model and uni-dimensionality. Items #1 and #4 (tired and fatigue respectively) showed differential item functioning (DIF) by sex, but no items showed DIFs in relation to age. The separation index of the LFS 3-item scale showed that the sample could be separated into three different groups according to the respondents' fatigue levels. The LFS-3 raw scores correlated strongly with the Rasch measure from the three items. The core dimensions in these individual items were very similarly expressed in the Norwegian language version and this may be a threat to the cultural-related or language validity of a short version of the LFS using these particular items.CONCLUSIONS: The study provides validation of a short LFS 3-item version for estimating fatigue in the general population.

    • Background: The concept occupational balance has been linked with health and well-being, and it is therefore viewed as an important concept for occupational therapy practice, theory and research. To operationalize and measure occupational balance, the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ) was developed in Sweden. To date, no Norwegian translations of the OBQ exists.Aim: To describe the process of developing a Norwegian version of the 11-items Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-N) and to evaluate its feasibility and face validity.Methods: The development process followed a predetermined series of steps, including forward and back translation and cognitive interviews with a pilot sample.Results: The pilot study sample (n = 8) varied with respect to age, gender and education level. There was high level of agreement between the participants with regard to their understanding of the content of the items. Three of the items were slightly modified in terms of words and phrasing.Conclusion: The OBQ11-N was developed according to established translation guidelines and appears to be feasible and have good face validity.Significance: The OBQ11-N may prove useful for assessing occupational balance and associated factors in Norwegian population groups. However, more research is needed to establish the Norwegian version of the questionnaire as psychometrically valid.
