  • Longitudinal infusion of a complex of insulin-like growth factor-I and IGF-binding protein-3 in five preterm infants : pharmacokinetics and short-term safety.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-3998 .- 1530-0447. ; 73:1, s. 68-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:In preterm infants, low levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) are associated with impaired brain growth and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Treatment with IGF-I/IGFBP-3 may be beneficial for brain development and may decrease the prevalence of ROP.Methods:In a phase II pharmacokinetics and safety study, five infants (three girls) with a median (range) gestational age (GA) of 26 wk + 6 d (26 wk + 0 d to 27 wk + 2 d) and birth weight of 990 (900-1,212) g received continuous intravenous infusion of recombinant human (rh)IGF-I/rhIGFBP-3. Treatment was initiated during the first postnatal day and continued for a median (range) duration of 168 (47-168) h in dosages between 21 and 111 µg/kg/24 h.Results:Treatment with rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 was associated with higher serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations (P < 0.001) than model-predicted endogenous levels. Of 74 IGF-I samples measured during study drug infusion, 37 (50%) were within the target range, 4 (5%) were above, and 33 (45%) were below. The predicted dose of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 required to establish circulating levels of IGF-I within the intrauterine range in a 1,000 g infant was 75-100 µg/kg/24 h. No hypoglycemia or other adverse effects were recorded. Conclusion:In this study, continuous intravenous infusion of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 was effective in increasing serum concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-3, and was found to be safe.

  • ‘I want to go home’: a comparative study of unsafe and safe spaces in two Swedish school-age educare institutions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, many children between the ages of 6 and 9 years attend Swedish school-age educare (SAEC) institutions before and after school, when their parents work or study. This study aimed to explore and compare safe and unsafe spaces in children’s everyday lives at SAEC institutions. Ethnographic fieldwork, including observations and interviews with the staff and children, was conducted at two different SAECs. Using space, agency, and violence, this study explores how the staff relates to safe and unsafe spaces in children’s everyday lives. Findings revealed differences in how everyday life plays out in the two SAECs, where unsafe spaces, with a risk of violence, more frequently exist in one SAEC than the other. The manner in which staff members perceived safe and unsafe spaces also impacted how children’s agency emerged in different spaces. The study findings have important implications for politicians and decision-makers.

  • “Sadly, we just let it go, it is so normalized”: Staff descriptions of violence among children within organized leisure
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Leisure Research. - 0022-2216.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate how staff describe violence among children within organized leisure in Sweden, named school-age EduCare. The study is based on ten semi-structured interviews with staff, and analyzed with theoretical concepts of Lefebvre’s space theory, and Galtung’s theory of violence. The results reveal three types of violence—quarrel for fun, violations, and physical violence—and three ways of reacting and managing it—stress and resignation, material adaption, and adaption through guarding. In conclusion, this study shows an everyday life filled with violent spaces, but limited resources for staff to cope with violence and create safe spaces for children and staff. The study pinpoints the complexity in everyday life where violence in different ways occurs between children, and staff are unable to manage this in an appropriate way. Instead, staff adjust to time and place, where spaces of violence between children are normalized.

  • ‘This place does not feel safe’: safe and unsafe spaces in Swedish school-age educare
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Children's Geographies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1473-3285 .- 1473-3277. ; 21:6, s. 1044-1057
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the occurrence of violence in children’s everyday lives in different places in school and school-age educare. School-age educare is a Swedish institution providing care before and after school. The study is based on interviews, observations, and walk-and-talk sessions with 11 children in a school-age educare institution. A thematic analysis informed by the theoretical concepts of Doreen Massey (space and place) and Johan Galtung (direct, structural, and cultural violence) was conducted. Three themes were developed: spaces of tense waiting; pop-up yard spaces; and ignored spaces in the woods. The results show that physical and psychological violence arises in the schoolyard, gym, and canteen. The staff did not always pay attention to the violence that occurred, and the children found ways to navigate and handle violence by avoiding certain places. They also used relationships with children and adults for their support. This study examines the everyday life in which direct and cultural violence occur.
