- Applikationen Alice for the iPad (2010) släpptes kort efter lanseringen av den första surfplattan och är en adaption av Lewis Carrolls The Nursery «Alice» (1890), en förkortad version av Alice i underlandet (1866) med illustrationer av John Tenniel. I artikeln är syftet att lyfta fram betydelsen av den återhållsamma animeringen av Tenniels bilder, och poängtera hur rörelsescheman remedierar och (re)konstruerar 1800-talets visuella kulturer och tidens intresse för optisk apparatur/leksaker och popup-böcker, som på olika sätt i tid och rum utmanade den tvådimensionella stillbilden. Analysen visar hur rörelsemönster varieras, kombineras och används som ett stilistiskt men också narrativt verktyg: animationerna tillåts påverka framställningen, utan att förändra själva berättelsen. Den traditionellt framställda illustrationens möte med den digitala bildens estetik behandlas, hur den senares distinkta uttryck låter det av handen tecknade framträda i relief och tillika göra anspråk på autenticitet. Till detta kommer adaptionen, förflyttningen från materiell bok till bilderboksapplikation för surfplatta, hur appen tycks kräva och uppmana till ett visst hanterande, och liksom popup-boken baseras på det taktila och påverkbara. En central slutsats är att de enkla animationerna i kombination med ett ålderdomligt uttryck och välkända 1800-talsillustrationer bidrar till att varje förändring överraskar, bryter mot en förväntad stillhet. Animationernas och scenernas slutenhet bidrar också till en bibehållen bokkänsla. Applikationen är både synlig och osynlig i sin stil, den presenterar sig som en optisk leksak eller en högst materiell popup-bok från förr, samtidigt som just det uttalat ålderdomliga är självreflekterande.

"It´s Not For Real" : The Tablet as Palette in Early Childhood Education

- This qualitative study investigated how a group of three-year-old preschool children use the drawing application Doodlecast on iPads. The smoothness, rapid response, and distinctive digital visual expressions of the tablet provided visual feedback that influenced the children's preferences for colors. Doodlecast seemed to encourage the children to explore colors and superimpose and fill-in the iPad's screen. In addition, they painted very precise shapes and lines, which seemed to facilitate pattern making and discovery of signs and relations. The children used the eraser tool to correct, reveal, remove, and create shapes. Irrespective of the method –erasing, superimposing, or filling-in the screen – the clear and professional result seemed to provide a visual confirmation that the children were able to master formulas.

- A pre-ovarian block (POB) technique can be used for pain relief during oocyte retrieval in IVF. The local anaesthetic is deposited in the vaginal wall and between the vaginal wall and the peritoneal surface near the ovary using ultrasound guidance. The aim of this study was to test whether analgesia with POB resulted in improved pain relief compared to paracervical block (PCB).

Localization of the insulin receptor in caveolae of adipocyte plasma membrane

- The insulin receptor is a transmembrane protein of the plasma membrane, where it recognizes extracellular insulin and transmits signals into the cellular signaling network. We report that insulin receptors are localized and signal in caveolae microdomains of adipocyte plasma membrane. Immunogold electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy show that insulin receptors are restricted to caveolae and are colocalized with caveolin over the plasma membrane. Insulin receptor was enriched in a caveolae-enriched fraction of plasma membrane. By extraction with β-cyclodextrin or destruction with cholesterol oxidase, cholesterol reduction attenuated insulin receptor signaling to protein phosphorylation or glucose transport. Insulin signaling was regained by spontaneous recovery or by exogenous replenishment of cholesterol. β-Cyclodextrin treatment caused a nearly complete annihilation of caveolae invaginations as examined by electron microscopy. This suggests that the receptor is dependent on the caveolae environment for signaling. Insulin stimulation of cells prior to isolation of caveolae or insulin stimulation of the isolated caveolae fraction increased tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor in caveolae, demonstrating that insulin receptors in caveolae are functional. Our results indicate that insulin receptors are localized to caveolae in the plasma membrane of adipocytes, are signaling in caveolae, and are dependent on caveolae for signaling.

- Aim: The aim of the study was to deepen the current knowledge of how patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and long-term oxygen treatment think about and expect end-of-life. Design: A qualitative design was used. Methods: A purposeful sample of 19 patients with oxygen-dependent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was obtained from the Swedish National Registry on Respiratory Failure (Swedevox). Data was collected with semi-structured interviews and analysed using a hermeneutic approach. Results: The analysis revealed three themes: Living in the present without a future; difficulty talking about the uncertainty; and feeling anxious about leaving family behind. Participants indicated that healthcare professionals should invite them to mutual discussions as it was easier to reject an invitation if they could not talk right then, than to initiate a discussion themselves. Start of home oxygen or a deteriorating health status may be an important time to clinically address existential and end-of-life issues.
