  • An X-Ray and Radio View of the 2022 Reactivation of the Magnetar SGR J1935+2154
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 965:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 has garnered attention due to its emission of an extremely luminous radio burst, reminiscent of fast radio bursts (FRBs). SGR J1935+2154 is one of the most active magnetars, displaying flaring events nearly every year, including outbursts as well as short and intermediate bursts. Here, we present our results on the properties of the persistent and bursting X-ray emission from SGR J1935+2154 during the initial weeks following its outburst on 2022 October 10. The source was observed with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (quasi-)simultaneously during two epochs, separated by ∼5 days. The persistent emission spectrum is well described by an absorbed blackbody plus power-law model up to an energy of ∼25 keV. No significant changes were observed in the blackbody temperature (kT BB ∼ 0.4 keV) and emitting radius (R BB ∼ 1.9 km) between the two epochs. However, we observed a slight variation in the power-law parameters. Moreover, we detected X-ray pulsations in all the data sets and derived a spin-period derivative of P ̇ = 5.52 ( 5 ) × 10 − 11 s s−1. This is 3.8 times larger than the value measured after the first recorded outburst in 2014. Additionally, we performed quasi-simultaneous radio observations using three 25-32 m class radio telescopes for a total of 92.5 hr to search for FRB-like radio bursts and pulsed emission. However, our analysis did not reveal any radio bursts or periodic emission.

  • The SU(3)-invariant sector of new maximal supergravity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :3, s. 082-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the SU(3)-invariant sector of the one-parameter family of SO(8) gauged maximal supergravity that has been recently proposed. To this end, we construct the N=2 truncation of this theory and analyse its full vacuum structure. The number of critical point is doubled and includes new N=0 and N=1 branches. We numerically exhibit the parameter dependence of the location and cosmological constant of all extrema. Moreover, we provide their analytic expressions for cases of special interest. Connections with three-dimensional RG-flows are pointed out. Finally, while the mass spectra are found to be parameter independent in most cases, we show that the novel non-supersymmetric branch with SU(3) invariance provides the first counterexample to this.

  • Functional Validation of Virtual Screening for Novel Agents with General Anesthetic Action at Ligand-Gated Ion Channelss
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Molecular Pharmacology. - : American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). - 0026-895X .- 1521-0111. ; 84:5, s. 670-678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GABA(A) receptors play a crucial role in the actions of general anesthetics. The recently published crystal structure of the general anesthetic propofol bound to Gloeobacter violaceus ligand-gated ion channel (GLIC), a bacterial homolog of GABA(A) receptors, provided an opportunity to explore structure-based ligand discovery for pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs). We used molecular docking of 153,000 commercially available compounds to identify molecules that interact with the propofol binding site in GLIC. In total, 29 compounds were selected for functional testing on recombinant GLIC, and 16 of these compounds modulated GLIC function. Active compounds were also tested on recombinant GABA(A) receptors, and point mutations around the presumed binding pocket were introduced into GLIC and GABA(A) receptors to test for binding specificity. The potency of active compounds was only weakly correlated with properties such as lipophilicity or molecular weight. One compound was found to mimic the actions of propofol on GLIC and GABA(A), and to be sensitive to mutations that reduce the action of propofol in both receptors. Mutant receptors also provided insight about the position of the binding sites and the relevance of the receptor's conformation for anesthetic actions. Overall, the findings support the feasibility of the use of virtual screening to discover allosteric modulators of pLGICs, and suggest that GLIC is a valid model system to identify novel GABA(A) receptor ligands.

  • Power-law cosmologies in minimal and maximal gauged supergravity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :6, s. 107-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we search for accelerating power-law solutions and ekpyrotic solutions within minimal and maximal four dimensional supergravity theories. We focus on the STU model for N = 1 and on the new CSO(p, q, r) theories, which were recently obtained exploiting electromagnetic duality, for N = 8. In the minimal case we find some new ekpyrotic solutions, while in the maximal case we find some new generic power-law solutions. We do not find any new accelerating solutions for these models.

  • Seeking Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Elders via Activity Suggestion by A Virtual Caregiver
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and MultiAgent Systems (AAMAS '18). - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450356497 ; , s. 1835-1837
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Addressing the lack of social, cognitive, and physical stimuli among elders is a key factor to contrast Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) that can arise during the third age. Against such background, agent-based technology has been applied to different application domains related to the assistance of elders. In this demo, we introduce an application of this kind: an activity center featuring social, cognitive, and physical activities targeted for elders. This activity center interacts with an autonomous agent, called Virtual Caregiver, residing in the cloud and generating interventions based on users’ data. We show how the user experience can be enriched with an adaptive configuration encouraging socialization and cognitive training.
