  • Accelerating digital transformation : 10 years of software center
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Software Center (a collaboration between 18 European companies and five Swedish universities) by presenting some of the most impactful and relevant journal or conference papers that researchers in the center have published over the last decade. The book is organized around the five themes around which research in Software Center is organized, i.e. Continuous Delivery, Continuous Architecture, Metrics, Customer Data and Ecosystems Driven Development, and AI Engineering. The focus of the Continuous Delivery theme is to help companies to continuously build high quality products with the right degree of automation. The Continuous Architecture theme addresses challenges that arise when balancing the need for architectural quality and more agile ways of working with shorter development cycles. The Metrics theme studies and provides insight to understand, monitor and improve software processes, products and organizations. The fourth theme, Customer Data and Ecosystem Driven Development, helps companies make sense of the vast amounts of data that are continuously collected from products in the field. Eventually, the theme of AI Engineering addresses the challenge that many companies struggle with in terms of deploying machine- and deep-learning models in industrial contexts with production quality. Each theme has its own part in the book and each part has an introduction chapter and then a carefully selected reprint of the most important papers from that theme. This book mainly aims at researchers and advanced professionals in the areas of software engineering who would like to get an overview about the achievement made in various topics relevant for industrial large-scale software development and management – and to see how research benefits from a close cooperation between industry and academia.

  • Coordination between global agile teams: From process to architecture
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Agility across time and space. Implementing agile methods in global software projects. - 9783642124419 ; , s. 217-233
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Traditional process-centric software development has served software-intensive companies well for decades. During recent years, however, the trends of increased adoption of software product lines, software ecosystems and in particular global software engineering have lead to unmanageable complexity and unacceptable overhead. In this paper we present research performed at three global companies in which we studied the relation be-tween large-scale and agile approaches to software development as well as current problems. In addition, by integrating the best practices adopted at the case study companies, we present an alternative approach: architecture-centric software engineering. This approach largely removes inter-team dependencies and provides much higher efficiency and productivity in global software development contexts.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-1356 .- 1865-1348. - 9783319087375 ; 182, s. 179-193
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growing importance of software ecosystems and open innovation requires that companies become more intentional about aligning their internal strategy, architecture and organizing efforts with the ecosystem that the company is part of. Few models exist that facilitate analysis and improvement of this alignment. In this paper, we present the ESAO model and describe its six main components. Organizations and researchers can use the model to analyze the alignment between the different parts of their business, technologies and ways of working, internally and in the ecosystem. The model is illustrated and validated through the use of three case studies.

  • From Integration to Composition: On the Impact of Software Product Lines, Global Development and Ecosystems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systems and Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 0164-1212. ; 83, s. 67-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three trends accelerate the increase in complexity of large-scale software development, i.e. software product lines, global development and software ecosystems. For the case study companies we studied, these trends caused several problems, which are organized around architecture, process and organization, and the problems are related to the efficiency and effectiveness of software development as these companies used too integration-centric approaches. We present five approaches to software development, organized from integration-centric to composition-oriented and describe the areas of applicability.

  • Introducing agile customer-centered development in a legacy software product line
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Software - Practice and Experience. - : Wiley. - 1097-024X .- 0038-0644. ; 41:8, s. 871-882
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to rapidly respond to customer interest and to effectively prioritize development effort has beena long-standing challenge for mass-market software intensive products. This problem is exacerbated in thecontext of software product lines as functionality may easily fall over software asset and organizationalboundaries with consequent losses in efficiency and nimbleness. Some companies facing these problemsin their product line respond with a new development process. In this paper we discuss the developmentswithin a single case study, Intuit’s Quickbooks product line that combined agile software development, design thinking and self-organizing teams in a successful approach, which provided a significant improvementin terms of responsiveness and accuracy of building customer value.

  • Pivots and Architectural Decisions: Two Sides of the Same Medal?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Eighth International Conference on Software Engineering Advances, ICSEA 2013. October 27, 2013 to October 31, Venice, Italy. - 9781612083049 ; , s. 310-317
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software architecture research has gained maturity over the last decades. It focuses on architectural knowledge, documentation, the role of the architect and rationale for the architecture decisions made. It is widely recognized that considering architecture decisions as first class entities helps in designing and maintaining architectures. In the entrepreneurial and new product development space, the lean startup movement is gaining momentum as one of the most notable ways to develop products. During new product development in highly uncertain environments, speed is the most important factor. Speed to get on the market, speed to learn from your customers, but also speed to tackle technological risks. Because the runway for new product development is short, it is important to experiment and make decisions quickly. The pivot plays a crucial role as a business decision for new product development. Both pivots and architectural design decisions can be seen as highly influential aspects for a product. In our research, we investigate what the fields of architecture research and lean startup could learn from each other. We focus our research on the two most important aspects of these movements: the architecture decision and the pivot, and show that they can be seen as two sides of the same medal representing the technical and the business side of the product.
