  • Minimal Risk Condition for Safety Assurance of Automated Driving Systems

    • We have yet to see wide deployment of automated driving systems (ADSs) on public roads. One of the reasons is the challenge of ensuring the systems' safety. The operational design domain (ODD) can be used to confine the scope of the ADS and subsequently also its safety case. For this to be valid the ADS needs to have strategies to remain in the ODD throughout its operations. In this paper we discuss the role of the minimal risk condition (MRC) as a means to ensure this. Further, we elaborate on the need for hierarchies of MRCs to cope with diverse system degradations during operations.

  • Offending trajectories from childhood to retirement age : Findings from the Stockholm birth cohort study

    • Aim: The current study explores heterogeneity in the aggregate age-crime curve. This is achieved by analyzing to what extent there is empirical support for the existence of pivotal typologies in developmental and life-course criminology, as well as whether there is any heterogeneity in trajectories among adult-onset offenders (first recorded for crime at age 25 or later).Methods: Data were drawn from a population-representative birth cohort of 14,608 males and females, followed prospectively in registers from age nine to 64. Trajectories of antisocial and criminal behavior were identified by means of group-based trajectory modelling.Results: A small group with a high prevalence of crime across the life course, among both males and females, was found. Furthermore, a large proportion of offenders were adult-onset offenders, and there was meaningful heterogeneity in their criminal trajectories. However, the data did not lend much support to the hypothesized phenomenon of late-blooming.Conclusion: There is meaningful heterogeneity in the aggregate age-crime curve, including trajectories that resonate fairly well with predictions derived from Moffitt's taxonomy. Nevertheless, there are firm reasons for theorizing proximate causes for the onset and continuation of crime beyond emerging adulthood.

  • Prevalence and recurrence rate of perianal abscess -a population-based study, Sweden 1997-2009

    • INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of diabetes mellitus, Crohn's disease, HIV/aids, and obesity on the prevalence and readmission rate of perianal abscess.METHODS: The study cohort was based on the Swedish National Patient Register and included all patients treated for perianal abscess in Sweden 1997-2009. The prevalence and risk for readmission were assessed in association with four comorbidity diagnoses: diabetes mellitus, Crohn's disease, HIV, and/or AIDS and obesity.RESULTS: A total of 18,877 patients were admitted during the study period including 11,138 men and 4557 women (2.4:1). Crohn's disease, diabetes, and obesity were associated with a significantly higher prevalence of perianal abscess than an age- and gender-matched background population (p < 0.05). In univariate analysis, neither age nor gender had any significant impact on the risk for readmission. In a multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis, Crohns disease was the only significant risk factor for readmission of perianal abscess.CONCLUSION: Crohn's disease, diabetes, and obesity increase the risk for perianal abscess. Of these, Crohn's and HIV has an impact on readmission. The pathogenesis and the influence of diabetes and obesity need further research if we are to understand why these diseases increase the risk for perianal abscess but not its recurrence.

    • Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to see whether perianal abscess rate differs between patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. A secondary aim was to determine whether poor glycemic control increases the risk for perianal abscess.Methods: Data from the Swedish National Diabetes Registry and the Swedish National Patient Registry between January 2008 and June 2015 were matched. The risk for anal abscess was evaluated in univariate and multivariate analyses with type of diabetes, HbA1c level, BMI, and various diabetes complications as independent factors.Results: Patients with type 1 diabetes had a lower rate of perianal abscess than patients with type 2 diabetes when adjusted for HbA1c, sex, and age (OR 0.65; 95% CI 0.57–0.73). The risk for perianal abscess increased with higher HbA1c. Incidence of perianal abscess was also elevated in diabetes patients with complications related to poor glycemic control such as ketoacidosis and coma (OR 2.63; 95% CI 2.06–3.35), gastroparesis, and polyneuropathy (OR 1.81; 95% CI 1.41–2.32).Conclusions: The prevalence of perianal abscess was higher among patients with type 2 diabetes than those with type 1, suggesting that metabolic derangement may be more important than autoimmune factors. Poor glycemic control was associated with higher risk for perianal abscess.

    • The generalized mutual information (GMI) is an achievable rate for bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and is highly dependent on the binary labeling of the constellation. The BICM-GMI, sometimes called the BICM capacity, can be evaluated numerically. This approach, however, becomes impractical when the number of constellation points and/or the constellation dimensionality grows, or when many different labelings are considered. A simple approximation for the BICM-GMI based on the area theorem of the demapper's extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) function is proposed. Numerical results show the proposed approximation gives good estimates of the BICM-GMI for labelings with close to linear EXIT functions, which includes labelings of common interest, such as the natural binary code, binary reflected Gray code, etc. This approximation is used to optimize the binary labeling of the 32-APSK constellation defined in the DVB-S2 standard. Gains of approximately 0.15 dB are obtained.

    • The high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic behavior of the mutual information (MI) for discrete constellations over the scalar additive white Gaussian noise channel is studied. Exact asymptotic expressions for the MI for arbitrary one-dimensional constellations and input distributions are presented in the limit as the SNR tends to infinity. Using the relationship between the MI and the minimum mean-square error (MMSE), asymptotics of the MMSE are also developed. It is shown that for any input distribution, the MI and the MMSE have an asymptotic behavior proportional to a Gaussian Q-function, whose argument depends only on the minimum Euclidean distance of the constellation and the SNR. Closed-form expressions for the coefficients of these Q-functions are calculated.

    • Asymptotic expressions of the mutual information between any discrete input and the corresponding output of the scalar additive white Gaussian noise channel are presented in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. Asymptotic expressions of the symbol-error probability (SEP) and the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) achieved by estimating the channel input given the channel output are also developed. It is shown that for any input distribution, the conditional entropy of the channel input given the output, MMSE, and SEP have an asymptotic behavior proportional to the Gaussian Q-function. The argument of the Q-function depends only on the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) of the constellation and the SNR, and the proportionality constants are functions of the MED and the probabilities of the pairs of constellation points at MED. The developed expressions are then generalized to study the high-SNR behavior of the generalized mutual information (GMI) for bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). By means of these asymptotic expressions, the long-standing conjecture that Gray codes are the binary labelings that maximize the BICM-GMI at high SNR is proven. It is further shown that for any equally spaced constellation whose size is a power of two, there always exists an anti-Gray code giving the lowest BICM-GMI at high SNR.

    • In this paper, different aspects of the bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) capacity for the Gaussian channel are analyzed. Analytical bounds for the BICM capacity are developed. These bounds suggest that the BICM capacity at high signal-to-noise ration (SNR) is determined by the multiplicity of the minimum Euclidean distance over all the subconstellations generated by the mapper. Based on this observation, we conjecture that for any constellation, the highest BICM capacity at high SNR is always obtained by a Gray code, if one exists. Ready-to-use expressions based on Gauss--Hermite quadratures to compute the coded modulation and BICM capacities for any SNR are also presented. Using these expressions, it is shown that the BICM capacity is in general a nonconvex, nonconcave function of the input bit distribution. For 8PAM and 8PSK, there exist 12 and 7 classes of mappings, respectively, with equivalent high-SNR behavior, of which the best class comprises all Gray codes.
