  • Sick listing-Partly a family phenomenon?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Socio-Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1053-5357. ; 40:5, s. 496-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being sick listed is not always identical to being ill; it is rather a behaviour associated with illness. In this paper we have analysed whether there is a higher risk of becoming sick listed if a family member has been sick listed earlier-partly a family phenomenon. This aspect of sick listing has never been investigated before. Our results indicate that an individual's risk of being sick listed in 2007 was higher if he/she had family members who had been sick listed in 2006. This may be a sign for an existing " sick listing culture" -social norms within families. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

  • Intermittent thoracic resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta improves renal function compared to 60 min continuous application after porcine class III hemorrhage
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1863-9933 .- 1863-9941. ; 49:3, s. 1303-1313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) may be considered for stabilization of patients with hemorrhage from below the diaphragm. Occluding the aorta is a powerful means of hemorrhagic control but is also associated with acute kidney injury, which increases mortality in trauma patients. Allowing for intermittent distal blood flow during REBOA application (iREBOA) could decrease this risk, but circulatory consequences have not been sufficiently elucidated. Therefore, we investigated circulatory effects and the renal artery blood flow (RBF) in iREBOA versus continuous, complete aortic occlusion (cREBOA).Methods In a porcine model of uncontrolled class III hemorrhage (34% estimated total blood volume, mean 1360 mL), swine (n = 12, mean weight 60.3 kg) were randomly assigned to iREBOA: 3-min full deflation every 10 min (n = 6), or cREBOA (n = 6), for 60 min of thoracic (zone I) application. The animals then underwent 60 min of reperfusion (critical care phase). Results Survival was 100% in iREBOA and 83% in cREBOA. The intermittent balloon deflation protocol was hemodynamically tolerable in 63% of reperfusion intervals. Systolic blood pressure decreased during the reperfusion intervals in iREBOA animals (mean 108 mm Hg versus 169 mm Hg; p < 0.005). No differences were detected in heart rate, cardiac output or stroke volume between methods. Troponin I increased in cREBOA after 60 min (mean 666-187 ng/L, p < 0.05). The norepinephrine requirement increased in cREBOA during reperfusion (mean infusion time 12.5-5.5 min; p < 0.05). Total ischemic time decreased in iREBOA (60.0-48.6 min; p < 0.001). RBF increased in iREBOA during balloon deflations and after 60 min reperfusion (61%-39% of baseline RBF; p < 0.05). Urine output increased in iREBOA (mean 135-17 mL; p < 0.001). Nephronal osteopontin, a marker of ischemic injury, increased in cREBOA (p < 0.05).Conclusion iREBOA was survivable, did not cause rebleeding, decreased the total ischemic time and increased the renal blood flow, urine output and decreased renal ischemic injury compared to cREBOA. Intermittent reperfusions during REBOA may be preferred to be continuous, complete occlusion in prolonged application to improve renal function.

  • Kite Aerial Photography - Hué
  • 2014
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The Kite Aerial Photography - Hué project started with the intention from Mattias Ericsson and me Micael Norberg to work artistically on a jointly project with students from di erent art schools and from di erent cultures. We had an idea of building bridges both artistically and culturally. We traveled to Hué in Vietnam in order to explore new ways to collaborate and  nd new artistic meth- ods. We wanted to use kites and send our cameras up in the air to make aerial pictures. We tried to  nd a way to control events and by that also control our artistic outcome and understanding. But in the The Kite Aerial Photography project we had no control. The weather controlled our kites. The place and the language controlled what we knew and understood. What was left was to look into ourself and negate a compromise. The leftovers became documentations of an experience. And now I am looking back at those events, wondering what really happened. I am using words, trying to create an image of my memories and of my experience - hot air, smells and noise. Experi- ences I can’t communicate fully in words. You as a viewer will never feel them and I will only remember them. We will also remember di erently. Every participant have their own image ofwhat happened during those days in Hué. The feeling of being di erent, not understanding and being an outsider made us all meet ourselves in di erent ways. We believed that language would build bridges of understanding, and maybe it did. But here we are now. A long time has passed since we returned from Hué. What we have left are images and memories. I remember smells and emotions and in this state between memory and fact a tension is created. A juxtaposition of con ict- ing feelings. I look at the photographs now with a new understanding. We tried to move out of our comfort-zone looking for the unseen, the enigma, where memory and re ection becomes a liminal state. I now realize that knowledge is not fact or truth, but a state that we can call ”not knowing”. A state which for me is the very basic for understanding, and by that becoming the very essence of art.

  • A Probabilistic Framework for Decision-Making in Collision Avoidance Systems
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems. - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; 14:2, s. 637-648
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is concerned with the problem of decision-making in systems that assist drivers in avoiding collisions. An important aspect of these systems is not only assisting the driver when needed but also not disturbing the driver with unnecessary interventions. Aimed at improving both of these properties, a probabilistic framework is presented for jointly evaluating the driver acceptance of an intervention and the necessity thereof to automatically avoid a collision. The intervention acceptance is modeled as high if it estimated that the driver judges the situation as critical, based on the driver's observations and predictions of the traffic situation. One advantage with the proposed framework is that interventions can be initiated at an earlier stage when the estimated driver acceptance is high. Using a simplified driver model, the framework is applied to a few different types of collision scenarios. The results show that the framework has appealing properties, both with respect to increasing the system benefit and to decreasing the risk of unnecessary interventions.

  • A Real-time Implementation of an Intersection Collision Avoidance System
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IFAC Proceedings Volumes (IFAC-PapersOnline). - 2405-8963. - 9783902661937 ; 18:PART 1, s. 9794-9798
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a real-time implementation of a collision avoidance (CA) system that uses autonomous braking and model predictive control to assist drivers in avoiding collisions with other road users. To the authors knowledge, this is the first CA system that targets general vehicle collisions that has been implemented in a car. The system is based on a recently published decision-making algorithm which is described in [1]. To validate the CA system in various collision scenarios without endangering the driver of the vehicle, a novel test platform has been developed. The test platform consist of a soft crashable obstacle which is movable in speeds up to 70 km/h and safe to collide with in any angle in relative speeds up to 100 km/h. In the current implementation, estimates of the motion of the obstacle are obtained through a reference sensor fusion system that is based on a combination of in-vehicle sensors and a differential global positioning system. Results from both intersection and rear-end collision situations are presented. The results show that the proposed CA system can be implemented in a real-time environment and that the predictive brake control algorithm accurately accounts for delays and ramp-up times in the brake system of the vehicle.
