    • We have studied the fragmentation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon anthracene (C14H10) after double electron transfer to a 5 keV proton. The excitation energies leading to the most relevant dissociation and fission channels of the resulting molecular dication were directly determined experimentally. Density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the potential energy surfaces on which the fragmentation dynamics proceed. There is clear experimental evidence for a dominance of fission into C11H7+-C3H3+ over C2H2+ loss. The energetic ordering of the dissociation and fission channels and the kinetic energy releases are in good agreement with the theoretical results. It can be concluded that the unique combination of experiment and theory presented here is an excellent tool to study the fragmentation of complex molecular ions in unprecedented detail.

    • We report on the design, construction, and commissioning of a novel electrostatic ion storage ring of small dimensions-in the following referred to as ""Mini-Ring."" Mini-Ring consists of four horizontal parallel-plate deflectors and two conical electrostatic mirrors. Ions are injected through the two deflectors on the injection side and off axis with respect to the conical mirrors which face each other. The first injection deflector, originally at zero voltage, is switched to its set value such that the ions after one turn follow stable trajectories of lengths of roughly 30 cm. This design reduces the number of electrodes necessary to guide the ion beam through the ring in stable orbits. The six elements (deflectors and mirrors) are placed on a common grounded plate-the tabletop. Here, we present the design, ion trajectory simulations, and results of the first test experiments demonstrating the successful room-temperature operation of Mini-Ring at background pressures of 10(-6)-10(-7) mbar.

    • The conformational state of DNA fine-tunes the transcriptional rate and abundance of RNA. Here, we report that G-quadruplex DNA (G4-DNA) accumulates in neurons, in an experience-dependent manner, and that this is required for the transient silencing and activation of genes that are critically involved in learning and memory in male C57/BL6 mice. In addition, site-specific resolution of G4-DNA by dCas9-mediated deposition of the helicase DHX36 impairs fear extinction memory. Dynamic DNA structure states therefore represent a key molecular mechanism underlying memory consolidation. One-Sentence Summary: G4-DNA is a molecular switch that enables the temporal regulation of the gene expression underlying the formation of fear extinction memory.
