  • Serological immune response against ADAM10 pro-domain is associated with favourable prognosis in stage III colorectal cancer patients

    • A humoral immune response against aberrant tumor proteins can be elicited in cancer patients, resulting in the production of auto-antibodies (Abs). By serological proteome analysis we identified the surface membrane protein ADAM10, a metalloproteinase that has a role in epithelial-tumor progression and invasion, as a target of the immune response in colorectal cancer (Crc). A screening carried out on the purified protein using testing cohorts of sera (Crc patients n = 57; control subjects n = 39) and validation cohorts of sera (Crc patients n = 49; control subjects n = 52) indicated that anti-ADAM10 auto-Abs were significantly induced in a large group (74%) of colon cancer patients, in particular in patients at stage II and III of the disease. Interestingly, in Crc patients classified as stage III disease, the presence of anti-ADAM10 auto-Abs in the sera was associated with a favourable follow-up with a significant shifting of the recurrence-free survival median time from 23 to 55 months. Even though the ADAM10 protein was expressed in Crc regardless the presence of auto-Abs, the immature/non-functional isoform of ADAM10 was highly expressed in the tumor of anti-ADAM10-positive patients and was the isoform targeted by the auto-Abs. In conclusion, the presence of anti-ADAM10 auto-Abs seems to reflect the increased tumor expression of the immunogenic immature-ADAM10 in a group of Crc patients, and is associated with a favourable prognosis in patients at stage III of the disease.

  • Panchromatic sensitized solar cells based on metal sulfide quantum dots grown directly on nanostructured TiO2 electrodes

    • The use of narrow band gap semiconductors such as PbS may expand the light absorption range to the near-infrared region in quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), increasing the generated photocurrent. However, the application of PbS as a sensitizer in QDSCs causes some problems of stability and high recombination. Here, we show that the direct growth of a CdS coating layer on previously deposited PbS by the simple method of successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) minimizes these problems. A remarkable short-circuit current density for PbS/CdS QDSCs is demonstrated, ∼11 mA/cm2, compared to that of PbS QDSCs, with photocurrents lower than 4 mA/cm2, using polysulfide electrolyte in both cells. The cell efficiency reached a promising 2.21% under 1 sun of simulated irradiation (AM1.5G, 100 mW/cm2). Enhancement of the solar cell performance beyond the arithmetic addition of the efficiencies of the single constituents (PbS and CdS) is demonstrated for the nanocomposite PbS/CdS configuration. PbS dramatically increases the obtained photocurrents, and the CdS coating stabilizes the solar cell behavior. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

  • Joint Resource Allocation and Transceiver Design for Sum-Rate Maximization Under Latency Constraints in Multicell MU-MIMO Systems

    • Due to the continuous advancements of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple antenna techniques, multiuser multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) OFDM is a key enabler of both fourth and fifth generation networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of weighted sum-rate maximization under latency constraints in finite buffer multicell MU-MIMO OFDM systems. Unlike previous works, the optimization variables include the transceiver beamforming vectors, the scheduled packet size and the resources in the frequency and power domains. This problem is motivated by the observation that multicell MU-MIMO OFDM systems serve multiple quality of service classes and the system performance depends critically on both the transceiver design and the scheduling algorithm. Since this problem is non-convex, we resort to the max-plus queuing method and successive convex approximation. We propose both centralized and decentralized solutions, in which practical design aspects, such as signaling overhead, are considered. Finally, we compare the proposed framework with state-of-the-art algorithms in relevant scenarios, assuming a realistic channel model with space, frequency and time correlations. Numerical results indicate that our design provides significant gains over designs based on the wide-spread saturated buffers assumption, while also outperforming algorithms that consider a finite-buffer model.   • Forecasting power load curves from spatial and temporal mobile data

    • This work aims at applying computational intelligence approaches to telecommunication data, in order to associate mobile data to energy consumption load curves. Clustering methods are applied in order to allow the telecommunication network to infer about its topology and consumption load forecasting. Through an extensive analysis of Telecom Italia dataset and power distribution lines data available for the city of Trento, it was possible to confirm the high correlation between them, mainly when voice data is considered. To a great extent, this correlation can be explained by the fact that cellular communication devices are physically present in the service area of the distribution lines and when people are communicating, they are also consuming energy. Based on the aforementioned dataset, load curves for the city of Trento were constructed having as inputs data from telecommunication transactions. Results show that it is possible to use the telecommunication load as the input to predict the energy load, with the proposed model performing better than the naive predictor in 82% of the tested distribution lines.

  • Multi-laboratory experiment PME11 for the standardization of phosphoproteome analysis

    • Global analysis of protein phosphorylation by mass spectrometry proteomic techniques has emerged in the last decades as a powerful tool in biological and biomedical research. However, there are several factors that make the global study of the phosphoproteome more challenging than measuring non-modified proteins. The low stoichiometry of the phosphorylated species and the need to retrieve residue specific information require particular attention on sample preparation, data acquisition and processing to ensure reproducibility, qualitative and quantitative robustness and ample phosphoproteome coverage in phosphoproteomic workflows. Aiming to investigate the effect of different variables in the performance of proteome wide phosphoprotein analysis protocols, ProteoRed-ISCIII and EuPA launched the Proteomics Multicentric Experiment 11 (PME11). A reference sample consisting of a yeast protein extract spiked in with different amounts of a phosphomix standard (Sigma/Merck) was distributed to 31 laboratories around the globe. Thirty-six datasets from 23 laboratories were analyzed. Our results indicate the suitability of the PME11 reference sample to benchmark and optimize phosphoproteomics strategies, weighing the influence of different factors, as well as to rank intra and inter laboratory performance.

    • Two new organic sensitizers for dye solar cells containing a sterically hindered moiety have been synthesized. The introduction of a 3,4-dibutyl-thiophene ring into D-π-A dyes reduces the sensitizer aggregation and allows the preparation of solar cells with PCE of 7.17% and 6.27% without the use of coadsorbant agents. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
