  • Vowel reduction and the perception of words
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Fonetik 98 : proceedings. - 9189192036 ; , s. 36-39
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study deals with listeners' ability to identify linguistic units from linguistically incomplete stimuli and relates this to the potentiality of vowel reduction in a word. Synthetic speech was used to produce stimuli that were similar to real words, but where the vowel in the pre-stress syllable was excluded. Listeners then performed a lexical decision test, where they had to decide whether a stimulus sounded like a word or not. The effects of the identity of the removed vowel and of features of the consonants adjacent to the removed vowel were then examined. For type of vowel, lower word rates where found for words with the vowels /a/ and /o/, whereas words with nasals after the reduced vowel tended to result in higher word rates.

  • The front and sub-lingual cavities in coronal stops : An acoustic approach to volume estimation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the XVth International Congress of Phonetic Sciences, Barcelona. ; , s. 941-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The subapical cavity has been shown to play a significant role in determining the F-patterns of articulations made with a raised tongue blade. This paper reports quantitative data on subapical volumes for Swedish dental and retroflex voiced stops. These estimates were made by means of an acoustic method using pulse excitation of the front cavity. EPG was employed to determine the place of articulation of the consonants. Front cavity volumes were found to vary in an approximately linear fashion as a function of place of articulation. For retroflex consonants, volumes ranged between 2 and 11 cm3. A lawful second-order effect was observed with front vowel contexts tending to shift the pattern towards smaller, and back vowels towards larger volumes.

  • Pausing in Spontaneous Speech
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Fonetik 98 : proceedings. - 9189192036 ; , s. 158-161
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Pauses in spontaneous speech have a freer distribution than pauses in read texts; however, they are not distributed haphazardly. The results of the present study show that the majority of the perceived pauses in the spontaneous speech material, 73%, occur in one of the following three positions: between sentences, after discourse markers and conjunctions and before accented content words. This is a short version of an unpublished paper on pausing in spontaneous speech.

  • The RespTrack system
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 1st International Seminar on the Foundations of Speech : BREATHING, PAUSING, AND THE VOICE, 1st –3rd December 2019 in Sønderborg, Denmark. ; , s. 16-18
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the RespTrack system for measuring and real-time monitoring of respiratory movements. RespTrack was developed in the Phonetics Laboratory at Stockholm University and the authors have been using it extensively for research for the past five years. Here, we describe briefly the underlying techniques, calibration, digitization as well as recent developments of the system. The presentation at SEFOS 2019 will also include a live demonstration of the system.
