  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish school’s commission to promote equal treatment and counteract discrimination is extensive and entails active work on fundamental values in everyday activities. This article presents resultsfrom an action-oriented ethnographic study in which we, together with teachers and students at the language introduction-programme in upper secondary school, reviewed and developed methods of working with fundamental values in education. Using theories of intersectionality, critical multiculturalism, and critical pedagogy, we query the possibilities to fully include students of different backgrounds. Our analysis shows how the students were approached from a deficit model and that gender and sexuality were used as ethnic markers between Swedishness and non-Swedishness. Further, the potential in starting from students’ experiences and seeing the possibilities with an anti-racist, critical perspective on ethnicity is highlighted. Thus, we propose that teaching on fundamental values in language introduction needs to break with the idea of an imagined normative Swedishness and switch from a monocultural to an intercultural perspective in order to increase students’ opportunities for participation and inclusion.

  • Beyond cultural racism : Challenges for an anti-racist sexual education for youth
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Youth, Sexuality and Sexual Citizenship. - London : Routledge. - 9780815379874 - 9781351214742 ; , s. 71-85
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter analyses sexual educational material in Sweden that aspires to a ‘norm critical’ agenda, i.e. which explicitly seeks to challenge norms regarding gender, sexuality, able-bodyness, race and ethnicity. The analysis is interested in the ways the material attempts to move beyond racialised notions of immutable cultural differences. We argue that while the material avoids reproducing stereotypes, it fails to develop an alternative way of conceptualising culture and its importance for sexuality. It also falls prey to a liberal discourse in its attempt to bridge differences by aspiring to universal rights. A more fruitful alternative, we suggest, would be to turn to a transversal politics so as to develop a form of sex education that can accommodate conflicting values, while treating culture in a non-essentialist way.

  • Conceptual unclarity about COVID-19 ethnic disparities in Sweden: Implications for public health policy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1363-4593 .- 1461-7196. ; 27:2, s. 186-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on abundant racial and ethnic health disparities in many countries around the world. In Sweden, statistics on COVID-19 mortality and morbidity from both the first and the second wave of the pandemic show that foreign-born individuals have been disproportionately affected as compared to Swedish-born individuals. However, as demonstrated in this article, key stakeholders including politicians and public authorities, mainstream media, and medical researchers do not draw on the same explanatory framework when conceptualizing the health disparity. Probing the different discourses that were articulated through oral and written accounts during the first wave, the article identifies three different frameworks of how ethnic health disparities in relation to COVID-19 were understood in Sweden: the socioeconomic framework, the cultural framework and the biological framework. In a concluding discussion, we discuss the importance of our findings for health policy and argue for continued interrogation of epidemiological knowledge production from a critical vantage point in order to successfully combat health inequalities.

  • Culture and Context in Mental Health Diagnosing : Scrutinizing the DSM-5 Revision.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Humanities. - : Springer. - 1041-3545 .- 1573-3645. ; 40:3, s. 347-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and its claim of incorporating a "greater cultural sensitivity." The analysis reveals that the manual conveys mixed messages as it explicitly addresses the critique of being ethnocentric and having a static notion of culture yet continues in a similar fashion when culture is applied in diagnostic criteria. The analysis also relates to current trends in psychiatric nosology that emphasize neurobiology and decontextualize distress and points to how the DSM-5 risks serving as an ethnic dividing line in psychiatry by making sociocultural context relevant only for some patients.
