  • Shifts in coastal sediment oxygenation cause pronounced changes in microbial community composition and associated metabolism.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Microbiome. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2049-2618. ; 5:1, s. 96-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A key characteristic of eutrophication in coastal seas is the expansion of hypoxic bottom waters, often referred to as 'dead zones'. One proposed remediation strategy for coastal dead zones in the Baltic Sea is to mix the water column using pump stations, circulating oxygenated water to the sea bottom. Although microbial metabolism in the sediment surface is recognized as key in regulating bulk chemical fluxes, it remains unknown how the microbial community and its metabolic processes are influenced by shifts in oxygen availability. Here, coastal Baltic Sea sediments sampled from oxic and anoxic sites, plus an intermediate area subjected to episodic oxygenation, were experimentally exposed to oxygen shifts. Chemical, 16S rRNA gene, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic analyses were conducted to investigate changes in chemistry fluxes, microbial community structure, and metabolic functions in the sediment surface.RESULTS: Compared to anoxic controls, oxygenation of anoxic sediment resulted in a proliferation of bacterial populations in the facultative anaerobic genus Sulfurovum that are capable of oxidizing toxic sulfide. Furthermore, the oxygenated sediment had higher amounts of RNA transcripts annotated as sqr, fccB, and dsrA involved in sulfide oxidation. In addition, the importance of cryptic sulfur cycling was highlighted by the oxidative genes listed above as well as dsvA, ttrB, dmsA, and ddhAB that encode reductive processes being identified in anoxic and intermediate sediments turned oxic. In particular, the intermediate site sediments responded differently upon oxygenation compared to the anoxic and oxic site sediments. This included a microbial community composition with more habitat generalists, lower amounts of RNA transcripts attributed to methane oxidation, and a reduced rate of organic matter degradation.CONCLUSIONS: These novel data emphasize that genetic expression analyses has the power to identify key molecular mechanisms that regulate microbial community responses upon oxygenation of dead zones. Moreover, these results highlight that microbial responses, and therefore ultimately remediation efforts, depend largely on the oxygenation history of sites. Furthermore, it was shown that re-oxygenation efforts to remediate dead zones could ultimately be facilitated by in situ microbial molecular mechanisms involved in removal of toxic H2S and the potent greenhouse gas methane.

  • A descriptive study on the treatment of pediatric CRPS in the Nordic countries and Germany
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Paediatric & Neonatal Pain. - : Wiley. - 2637-3807. ; 3:4, s. 163-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pediatric complex regional pain syndrome (pCRPS) is a rare, painful state that often occurs as a complication following physical trauma. Diagnosis and treatment require specialist expertise in a multidisciplinary setting. Treatment is focused on pain reduction and improvement in function, which differs from the treatment of adult CRPS. We performed a cross-sectional survey with the aim of identifying pain centers in the Nordic countries and Germany that specialized in treating children with pain, especially pCRPS, and sought to describe their treatment strategies. Centers and health-care professionals working with children experiencing chronic pain were identified using internet search engines, phones, or e-mail. A standardized set of questions and an electronic questionnaire were answered by the participants. A total of 28 participants were identified in 24 centers, which were involved with patients having pCRPS (Germany: 7, Norway: 7, Sweden: 5, Finland: 5, Denmark: 3, and Island: 1). One center in Germany treated more than 20 patients per year. Half of the identified centers (n = 12) treated between 1 and 5 children with pCRPS per year. Guidelines for treating pCRPS were reportedly followed by 9/28 responders (32%), and physiotherapy was reported to be part of the treatment routine in most centers (74%). Interventional anesthesia was rarely used. Psychological therapy: 57% answered that it was always offered, 30% replied that it was proffered in most cases, and 13% responded that it was recommended in only a few patients. Pharmacological treatments were not commonly used. Treatment resources for pCRPS are scarce in the Nordic countries and Germany. Most centers treated very few children with pCRPS and did not have established guidelines. A multidisciplinary approach was used by many centers, most often combining physiotherapy and psychotherapy, and less commonly pharmacological treatment. The difficulties in diagnosing pCRPS and finding official referral units are unfortunate, considering the potentially favorable outcome with adequate treatment.

  • Med Gårdagens Dörr på glänt : Povel Ramel och melodins epok
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to examine the style of the Swedish entertainer Povel Ramel (1922-2007) as a composer and lyricist of popular songs, and to elucidate his relation to the older popular music culture, denoted "the age of melody". In the main part of the study the author analyses more than 80 works by Ramel, which he created in the 1950s and 60s. Many of the most characteristic features of the age of melody are outlined as a background to the analysis. The age of melody was the first period of popular music in the Western world - from the music hall to the bossa nova. It ended when rock became dominant over older types of popular song ("schlager"). Its musical roots were in the 19th century European parlour and dance music but gradually it became more and more influenced by American folk music. Along with the development from the pre-industrial world to the modern, urban, industrial world there emerged strong tensions between old familiar national traditions and new foreign temptations and threats. These tensions marked both the intellectual modernism and the popular culture through the whole age. Povel Ramel was in many ways the typical composer of the age of melody. His work encompasses all its predominant styles, genres and features; he catches the humour, the optimism, the distance and the tension between the old and the new, the Swedish and the foreign. And yet he was unique. His uniqueness lies in his attention and awareness of these styles and features, and in his concentrated and varied interpretations of them. He reflected the notional worlds of the age of melody in both poetical and philosophical ways, but most of all - with an unusual sincere playfulness.

  • 2007
